The New England Patriots<\/strong><\/a> finish up their brief two-game homestand by taking on the Baltimore Ravens on Monday Night Football. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:30 p.m.<\/p>\n

This week\u2019s game will be broadcast by ESPN and can be seen locally on WCVB -TV Channel 5 in Boston. Sean McDonough will handle play-by-play duties with Jon Gruden as the color analyst. Lisa Salters will work the sidelines. The game will also be aired on the Patriots flagship radio station 98.5 The SportsHub with Bob Socci and Scott Zolak on the call, produced by Marc Cappello.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Patriots<\/strong>\u00a0(10-2) beat the Rams 26-10 at Gillette Stadium. Tom Brady became the winningest QB in NFL history with his 201st<\/sup> win. The Patriots win also marked the 14th<\/sup> straight season that the Pats have won 10+ games.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Ravens <\/strong>(7-5) blew out the Miami Dolphins 38-6 which snapped Miami\u2019s six-game winning streak. Joe Flacco threw for 386 yards and four touchdowns and the defense shut down the Dolphins offense.<\/p>\n

We here at\u00a0PatsFans.com<\/a>\u00a0are continuing our \u201cRazor\u2019s Edge\u201d\u00a0column in 2016 to give some quick\u00a0analysis on some of the key matchups of the game and what you can look for in how the game plays out.<\/p>\n

Series History:<\/strong>
\nThe Patriots and Ravens are meeting for the 13th<\/sup> time since 1996 when the Browns moved to Baltimore. The two teams have met eight times in the regular season with the Patriots holding a 7-1 advantage. The teams have met four times in the playoffs with all four in Foxboro with the teams splitting those contests with 2 wins each.<\/p>\n

The Pats won the last contest which was the Divisional Playoff Game of 2014. The Patriots overcame two 14-point deficits to win 35-31. That was the game of the now famous double pass from Tom Brady to Julian Edelman to Danny Amendola<\/p>\n

Here is a look at some of the key matchups and who holds the Razor\u2019s Edge.<\/p>\n

First up is the Patriots offense:<\/p>\n

Patriots RBs vs Ravens Front Seven –\u00a0Razor\u2019s Edge Baltimore
\n<\/em><\/strong>The Patriots rush offense is going against the best rush defense in the league in Baltimore who allow only 73.8. Baltimore\u2019s front seven is big, physical, and aggressive and can stuff the run easily.<\/p>\n

Much like the Jets game, the Patriots CAN run but it is going to be very difficult this week. They\u2019re going to have to mix things up and try to keep the Ravens defense off-balance. The addition of Dion Lewis will help things in this regard as they can show pass and try to hit on some quick hitters to get to the second level. Timmy Jernigan and Brandon Williams will be a big test for the Pats David Andrews and Joe Thuney. They may opt to try the right side behind Shaq Mason and Marcus Cannon.<\/p>\n

This won\u2019t be a big day for carries by LeGarrette Blount. Blount leads the league in rushing touchdowns with 13 but Baltimore has allowed only four in 2016.<\/p>\n

Patriots WRs vs Ravens Secondary –\u00a0Razor\u2019s Edge New England
\n<\/em><\/strong>The Patriots and Tom Brady will try to replace Rob Gronkowski in their passing offense by going more to Julian Edelman and spreading the ball around to a variety of other receivers. In one way of looking at things, the Baltimore defense under Dean Pees won\u2019t have the luxury of knowing how they\u2019ll try to attack. Danny Amendola will miss this one as well with an ankle sprain.<\/p>\n

The Ravens play a lot of zone on early downs and do a great job of taking away the middle of the field. They\u2019re aggressive and blitz especially up the A-gaps on obvious passing downs.\u00a0 With Elvis Dumervil back, their pass rush now has bookend good rushers. Terrell Suggs leads the team with eight sacks.<\/p>\n

Look for Brady to get the running backs, James White, and Lewis more involved in the passing game. The Ravens will try to chip them on their way out of the backfield to slow their routes and give the edge rushers more time to get after Brady. Brady will have to be aware where safety Eric Weddle and LB C.J. Mosley are and look them off. They are the ballhawks with three interceptions a piece.<\/p>\n

Next up the Baltimore offense:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ravens RBs vs NE Front Seven –\u00a0Razor\u2019s Edge New England
\n<\/em><\/strong>The Ravens have been one of the worst teams in the league at running the football in 2016. They\u2019ve averaged only 89.7 yards per game which is 28th<\/sup> in the league. But they\u2019re getting better as their offensive line is getting healthy and back to being a cohesive unit again. In the last three games, their average is a much better 101 yards per game.<\/p>\n

They\u2019ll try to get Terrance West heavily involved as it will make their play-action game much more effective. West has rushed for 650 yards and five touchdowns. Kenneth Dixon is the change of pace, receiving back.<\/p>\n

The Patriots have been good against the run allowing just 94.3 yards per game. Alan Branch and Malcom Brown have done a great job of stuffing the running game at the point of attack. In the past two games against the Jets and Rams, the Pats allowed just 100 yards combined on the ground.<\/p>\n

Ravens WRs vs NE Secondary-\u00a0Razor\u2019s Edge Baltimore
\n<\/em><\/strong>The Ravens have a good passing game and with Joe Flacco getting better protection now, they\u2019re looking to improve even more down the stretch. Flacco has a trio of good targets with Mike Wallace, Steve Smith, and Dennis Pitta at tight end. \u00a0The Ravens like to go vertical in their passing game and get big chunks down the field.<\/p>\n

The Patriots may be without CB Eric Rowe in this one. Rowe took over the 2nd<\/sup> CB role which allowed Logan Ryan to move into the slot where he\u2019s more effective. This week, they may have to match Ryan up on Wallace with safety help and put Malcolm Butler on Smith. That scenario would put either Justin Coleman or rookie Cyrus Jones in the slot. Neither has been particularly good this season, so this will bear watching.<\/p>\n

The key here, like for Brady is the protection for Flacco. He\u2019s been poor when under pressure this season. And very good when given time. With a healthy O-Line, they should give him more time. It will be intriguing to see if Matt Patricia and Bill Belichick stay aggressive this week.<\/p>\n

Special Teams-<\/strong>\u00a0Razor\u2019s Edge Baltimore<\/em><\/strong>
\n<\/em>The Patriots special teams have been up and down all season. Last week they were up. Stephen Gostkowski made all four field goal attempts and both extra points and was the AFC STs Player of the Week. Ryan Allen has been solid with a 43.8-yard average and a 40.8-yard net in punting. The coverage units have been solid.<\/p>\n

The Ravens have had the luxury of having the best kicker in the NFL in 2016. Justin Tucker hasn\u2019t missed a field goal in his last 35 attempts dating back to last year and is perfect on extra points. Sam Koch has a 46.0-yard average in the punting game. Had Amendola been healthy, he could have been a factor in the return game but Jones, who has been shaky will likely get the call.<\/p>\n

Next up, who wins and why\u2026<\/p>\n

Prediction:
\n<\/strong>This game should be another seat of your pants Patriots \u2013 Ravens games that we\u2019ve become accustomed to. The two teams know each other well and have a healthy disdain for one another which, on the national stage of MNF should make this a compelling watch.<\/p>\n

The keys to the game from a Patriots perspective is to be successful on early downs. If they get in third and long offensively, the Ravens defense will eat them up. They must get in third and short situations that are much more manageable.<\/p>\n

The Ravens are also one of the best red zone defenses, while last week\u2019s settling for three points was an easy decision against the Rams, they have to score six when the get close this week. Look for Brady to go to the hurry up this week if they get a first down to try to keep the Baltimore defense off-balance. The Patriots will try to use their quickness with Edelman underneath and isolate one of the running backs on a linebacker to get some mismatches.<\/p>\n

The defense will have their hands full with the deep passing game of Baltimore. Look for Pitta to be Flacco\u2019s go-to guy in the middle of the field where they were so successful last week. A late score will be the difference and home field advantage is key for the Pats success. Patriots 24-21<\/strong><\/p>\n
