The game was initially scheduled for Sunday Night Football but has been flexed by the NFL to a 4:25 p.m. kickoff.

This week’s game will be televised by CBS and can be seen locally on WBZ Channel 4 in Boston. Greg Gumble will handle play-by-play duties with Trent Green as the color analyst. Jamie Erdahl will work the sidelines. The game will also be aired on the Patriots flagship radio station 98.5 The SportsHub with Bob Socci and Scott Zolak on the call, produced by Marc Cappello.

The Patriots (8-2) improved to 5-0 on the road this season with a 30-17 win over the San Francisco 49ers. Tom Brady was the AFC Offensive Player of the Week for the 27th time in his career with a four touchdown-zero interception effort. LeGarrette Blount led the running game with 124 yards on 19 carries.

The Jets (3-7) are coming off their bye week. Two weeks ago, they lost to the LA Rams 9-6 as QB Bryce Petty in his first NFL start subbing for an injured Ryan Fitzpatrick could only lead the Jets to a single touchdown drive. Fitzpatrick is healthy this week and has been given the nod by coach Todd Bowles as the starter.

We here at PatsFans.com are continuing our “Razor’s Edge” column in 2016 to give some quick analysis on some of the key matchups of the game and what you can look for in how the game plays out.

Series History:
The Patriots and Jets meet for the 115th time on Sunday in an intense rivalry that dates back to 1960. The Patriots hold a slight all-time 59-54-1 edge in the series that has been incredibly even and always tough.

The Jets hold a slim 29-27 edge overall at home. The Patriots have won 8 of the last 10 meetings, however. The teams split a pair of close games a year ago. The Patriots held serve in Foxboro with a 30-23 win and the Jets in the Meadowlands won a 26-20 overtime win on December 27. The Patriots won the toss and deferred, and Fitzpatrick led the Jets to a quick touchdown drive

Here is a look at some of the key matchups and who holds the Razor’s Edge.

First up is the Patriots offense:

Patriots RBs vs Jets Front Seven – Razor’s Edge New York
The Patriots rushing offense is averaging 118.3 yards per game behind LeGarrette Blount who leads the NFL with 12 rushing touchdowns. He also has added 802 yards rushing. He, James White and now Dion Lewis give the Patriots a three-headed monster in the backfield that can pound the ball between the tackles, have shiftier backs that give them a change of pace back and catch the ball out of the backfield.

The Jets run defense has been a bright spot for them in 2016. With a big, physical front seven they allow opponents to average just 85.4 yards per game and just 3.5 yards per rush. It starts up front with their big 3-4 defensive ends Muhammad Wilkerson and Leonard Williams. They have done a great job of disrupting and penetrating up front and blowing things up in the backfield.

The Patriots will try to keep their offensive balance this week and having Lewis back in the fold will help things by not allowing the Jets to pin their ears back by mixing in some quick hitters to slow down the pass rush. But they’ll find the going tough here. This week, they’ll have to pass to set up the run.

Patriots WRs vs Jets Secondary – Razor’s Edge New England
The Patriots passing game has plenty of weapons for Tom Brady to bring to bear on the Jets secondary. Even without Rob Gronkowski, who is said to be missing his second game in a row with a chest injury, they have plenty of targets for Tom Brady.

The quicker, shiftier wide receivers of NE Julian Edelman, Danny Amendola, and Chris Hogan will give the Jets a tough matchup underneath. Malcolm Mitchell after a strong game last week will see some snaps as well. Martellus Bennett has had a very strong season although the Patriots don’t use him to attack the seams like they do with Gronk. White and Lewis out of the backfield, give Brady more options to work with

The Jets pass defense has been struggling for much of 2016 and they are allowing 260.5 yards per game. Darrelle Revis has struggled for much of the season as his body is breaking down on him. Teams no longer fear to tread on Revis Island, in fact, have been targeting him. Williams leads the way with 6 sacks on a defense that has just mustered 19.

With Brady, getting the time is almost everything, the key is the middle of the pocket. If Williams can come up the middle and disrupt things, it will be a win for the Jets. Brady’s biggest asset is his ability to step up and slide in the pocket. If he can do that, he’ll have a big day.

Next up the New York offense:

Jets RBs vs NE Front Seven – Razor’s Edge New York
The Jets signed Matt Forte this offseason and he’s been their workhorse carrying the ball 189 times for 732 yards and seven touchdowns. Bilal Powell is the Jets second back and he gives them some impressive production, with 272 yards on the ground averaging 6.8 yards per carry. When the Jets run effectively, they win. When they don’t they lose. It’s been as simple as that. When Forte carries 25 or more times the Jets are 3-0. When he carries less than that, they’re 0-7.

The Patriots run defense has been up and down this season and they’re allowing 103.1 yards per game which is middle of the pack in terms of NFL ranking. They were doing a lot of mixing and matching last week in San Francisco but whenever Dont’a Hightower was out of the game, they struggled to stop the run. Rookie Elandon Roberts has had issues lately and he may split time with Shea McClellin. Alan Branch is facing a four-game suspension, but due to his appeal, he should play on Sunday. The Patriots have he and Malcom Brown in the middle.

The Jets will try to keep this one close where their versatile running game will make a big difference. Powell is the “X-Factor” for the Jets this week. He’s so valuable in both the running and passing games, he will be a key player to watch. In the second game between the two teams in 2015, he gained a total of 90 yards on just 12 touches.

Jets WRs vs NE Secondary- Razor’s Edge New England
The Jets passing game has struggled in 2016 with Fitzpatrick leading the league in interceptions with 13. After going thru contentious salary negotiations this spring and summer, he’s failed to reproduce the season he had in 2015.

The Jets really miss Eric Decker who was placed on IR earlier this season. Thus, the numbers for the talented Brandon Marshall and Quincy Enunwa have taken a downturn the last few weeks. But both Powell and Forte out of the backfield help alleviate the situation especially this week.

The Patriots have struggled at times in 2016 defending the pass allowing 252.1 yards per game and part of the reason has been the pass rush has not been nearly as effective as last year. In a trickle-down effect, turnovers are way down this year. Questions still abound as to who the #2 corner is and who will cover backs out of the backfield.

Look for the Jets to get Marshall and Enunwa involved early in this one. It will be interesting to see if the Patriots and Matt Patricia opt to be a bit more aggressive in their pass rush this week. The Patriots did opt for that a bit against SF last week and it helped. Facing a non-mobile QB for a change may be a key. Covering the Jets backs will be another key area to watch.

Special Teams- Razor’s Edge New England
The Patriots special teams had an uneven game on Sunday. Stephen Gostkowski missed another extra point and Ryan Allen’s first two punts were forgettable but Danny Amendola returned a punt 30 yards to kick things off and Cyrus Jones handled a wet ball with no issues so there was good as well.

The Jets have had issues as well. Kicker Nick Folk has missed two extra points and had two field goal attempts blocked. Lachlan Edwards hasn’t stood out in his rookie season as the Jets punter. Their kickoff coverage unit allowed a 98-yard touchdown against Miami after a penalty forced a re-kick.

Next up, who wins and why…

Prediction:
This game is a classic divisional matchup that features two teams that respect but don’t like each other. When the schedule came out, we circled this one as one of the key games of the year. We had the Jets pegged as a possible playoff team in 2016 but that won’t materialize after a slow start and injuries doomed this season early.

But because it’s a rivalry game, and an opponent each knows well, expect a tough dogfight on Sunday. One key from a Patriots perspective is to start quickly. The Jets are averaging just 17.9 points per game. A couple of quick scores could get them into more of a passing mode where they’ve struggled with Fitzpatrick this season.

But I expect the Jets backs to have a good day, Powell and Forte will be players that keep their offense on the field and keep the Patriots off-balance. But the Pats have Brady and even sans Gronkowski, they have too many weapons for a defense allowing opposing QBs to have a 95.2 passer rating against. It will be close…as usual, but the Pats hold serve and move to 9-2. Patriots 27-21

Follow me on Twitter @SteveB7SFG or email me at stevebpatsfans@gmail.com

Listen to our Patriots 4th and 2 podcasts on blog talk radio as the writers Russ Goldman, Derek Havens and I from PatsFans.com discuss the latest Patriots news Wednesdays at 12 noon.

Turnovers are way down this year.
