The Patriots needed a roster spot to formally bring back Tom Brady, and it looks like now they’ll have one thanks to Jacoby Brissett’s season coming to an end.<\/p>\n

The team put the third-string quarterback on injured reserve after the Boston Globe reported he\u00a0underwent surgery on his injured thumb Friday<\/strong><\/a> to repair the damage done to his thumb suffered after he replaced Jimmy Garoppolo and got his first NFL start in Week 3 against Houston.<\/p>\n

Brissett did an admirable job for a rookie, completing 45-of-55 (61.8% completion percentage) for 400 yards and no interceptions. \u00a0That’s a higher completion percentage than 10 other starting NFL quarterbacks, including Carson Palmer (58.8%), Cam Newton (57.9%), Jay Cutler (60.9%), Paxton Lynch (58.3%), Aaron Rodgers (58.5%), Kase Keenum (55.4%), Ryan Fitzpatrick (55.8%), Blaine Gabbert (58.0%), Jameis Winston (58.2%) and Marcus Mariota (58.8%).<\/p>\n

That leaves Jimmy Garoppolo as the lone back-up behind Brady, who will get his first start of 2016 this Sunday out in Cleveland.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
