The New England Patriots<\/strong><\/a> will play the Buffalo Bills on Sunday afternoon at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.<\/p>\n

The game will be televised by CBS and can be seen locally on WBZ-TV Channel 4 in Boston. Ian Eagle will handle play-by-play duties with Dan Fouts as the color analyst. Evan Washburn will work the sidelines. The game will also be aired on the Patriots flagship radio station 98.5 The SportsHub with Bob Socci and Scott Zolak on the call, produced by Marc Cappello.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Patriots<\/strong>\u00a0(3-0) defeated the Houston Texans 27-0 on Thursday Night Football. LaGarrette Blount ran for 105 yards and two touchdowns while Jacoby Brissett played well in his first NFL start. The defense didn\u2019t allow Houston to cross midfield until there just a minute and a half left in the first quarter. The STs units forced two turnovers.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Bills<\/strong>\u00a0(1-2) beat the Arizona Cardinals 33-18 on Sunday in Buffalo. LeSean McCoy got the running game going with 110 yards and two TDs with QB Tyrod Taylor adding 76 more yards on the ground. The Bills defense sacked Carson Palmer five times and forced four interceptions in the second half.<\/p>\n

We here at\u00a0PatsFans.com<\/a>\u00a0are continuing our \u201cRazor\u2019s Edge\u201d\u00a0column in 2016 to give some quick\u00a0analysis on some of the key matchups of the game and what you can look for in how the game plays out.<\/p>\n

Series History:<\/strong>
\nThe Patriots and Bills will meet for the 113th<\/sup> time in their history and the first of two divisional matchups in 2016. The Patriots have dominated \u00a0the series holding a 69-42-1 edge overall. But Gillette Stadium hasn\u2019t been a welcome site for the Bills with the Pats winning 12 of 13 with the only Buffalo win being the 2014 regular season finale with many of the Patriots starters sitting or playing very reduced roles.<\/p>\n

The Patriots swept the Bills a year ago, winning 40-32 in Week 2 in Buffalo and 20-13 in a wild Monday Night Football game that was marked by an inadvertent whistle when he appeared to have a clear path to the end zone. Buffalo also stopped the Patriots string of scoring in 38 straight quarters by blanking them in the 4th<\/sup> quarter of that game.<\/p>\n

Here is a look at some of the key matchups and who holds the Razor\u2019s Edge.<\/p>\n

First up is the Patriots offense:<\/p>\n

Patriots RBs vs Bills Front Seven –\u00a0Razor\u2019s Edge New England
\n<\/em><\/strong>The Patriots have dedicated themselves to their running game in 2016, something we haven\u2019t seen in some time. They\u2019ve stuck with it and their patience has been rewarded. They currently own the NFL\u2019s #1 rushing attack with 150.7 yards per game. LaGarrette Blount leads the league in rushing (298 yards), the number of attempts (75), and is tied for the league lead in rushing TDs (4).<\/p>\n

While Blount gets the lion\u2019s share of the credit \u2026.and should, (update he was named AFC Offensive Player of the Month-Sept), the play of the offensive line deserves mention here. While not perfect by any means, their level of play has been much better in the first three games of 2016. The return of Dante Scarnecchia, Nate Solder, and James Develin all deserve mention here. As does the blocking of TE Martellus Bennett.<\/p>\n

The Bills have been ok but not great against the run, allowing 98.0 yards per game. They rely on their inside linebackers Preston Brown and Zach Brown who excel at filling the gaps and being the downhill run-stuffing types that are needed in the middle. Their defensive linemen, NT Corbin Bryant and rookie Adolphus Washington can be pushed back in the running game.<\/p>\n

Look for the Patriots to give Kyle Williams the J.J. Watt treatment of doubling him on nearly every down and running away from him on most plays. They\u2019ll stay patient with the running game and the additions of Bennett and Gronkowski should tip the scale for the Patriots in this matchup. If the Pats get ahead, the running game of Blount will become an even bigger weapon in the 2nd<\/sup> half.<\/p>\n

Patriots WRs vs Bills Secondary –\u00a0Razor\u2019s Edge New England
\n<\/em><\/strong>The Patriots passing game here will depend on two factors. Who is behind center either Jimmy Garoppolo or Jacoby Brissett and the other is, if it is Garoppolo, will his shoulder injury allow him to put enough on the ball to be effective. Regardless of who is behind center, the key for the Patriots is getting the ball out quickly.<\/p>\n

Julian Edelman, Danny Amendola, and Chris Hogan are good matchups against the Bills secondary. James White out of the backfield with Gronkowski and Bennett are the \u201cX-Factors\u201d in the passing offense. No one has a TE tandem like them and if given the time to throw, they will pressure the LBs\/Safeties in the middle of the field.<\/p>\n

Buffalo\u2019s Jerry Hughes and Lorenzo Alexander, their OLB edge rushers each have three sacks on the year. They always get a good push from Williams inside. They dialed up some intriguing looks against Arizona that resulted in a banner day for the defense. Their cornerback play, however, hasn’t been as good as a year ago. And now Ronald Darby is banged up.<\/p>\n

Look for the Bills to force NE into holding onto the ball and allowing their pass rush to get home. The Patriots will try to get the ball out early and get the chains moving. NE gets the edge here just because they have too many weapons for the defense to cover.<\/p>\n

Next up the Buffalo offense:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bills RBs vs NE Front Seven –\u00a0Razor\u2019s Edge Buffalo
\n<\/em><\/strong>The Bills got their running untracked in a big way a week ago, rushing for over 200 yards in the blowout win over the Cardinals. LeSean McCoy looked like himself on Sunday, being elusive, seeing the holes well and getting to the second level. The offensive line had a lot to do with that, especially the interior guys, C Eric Woods and Guards Richie Incognito and 2nd-year player John Miller who were very impressive.<\/p>\n

The Patriots have done a good job of limiting the running game thus far in 2016. Inside Malcolm Brown and Alan Branch have played well, they\u2019ll be backed up by Vincent Valentine and newcomer John Hughes. LBs Jamie Collins and Dont\u2019a Hightower are outstanding against the run. Edge rushers Jabaal Sheard and Chris Long will have to do a great job of not only setting the edge against McCoy but in not allowing QB Tyrod Taylor to get outside.<\/p>\n

This will be a key matchup for Buffalo. They haven\u2019t passed the ball well this year, and New England will be looking to slow them down and force the ball into Taylor\u2019s hands. The key for NE this week is Hightower. If he can play, it will be a huge boost for the defense.<\/p>\n

Bills WRs vs NE Secondary-\u00a0Razor\u2019s Edge New England
\n<\/em><\/strong>Buffalo has struggled to throw the ball this year. Top WR Sammy Watkins has been hobbled by an off-season foot injury that was re-aggravated last week. Charles Clay hasn\u2019t been the difference maker they\u2019ve hoped for and Taylor\u2019s struggles when he\u2019s forced to stay in the pocket remain. His key targets have been McCoy out of the backfield and Robert Woods. Their passing offense is mired in 30th<\/sup> (163.3 YPG) in the league.<\/p>\n

The Patriots struggle in the 2nd<\/sup> half against Miami were quickly forgotten against Houston. The secondary bracketed their WRs and they frustrated Brock Osweiler into trying to force the ball into tight windows all game.<\/p>\n

If Watkins can\u2019t go or is limited, look for the Patriots to load the box against McCoy and seek to contain Taylor and force him to beat them from the pocket. Sheard and Long will have to be cognizant not to get too far upfield and gradually squeeze the pocket around the Bills QB.<\/p>\n

Special Teams-<\/strong>\u00a0Razor\u2019s Edge Push
\n<\/em>The Patriots special teams had a tremendous night against Houston. Not only did K Stephen Gostkowski make all five of his kicks, 3 PATs, 2 FGs, but his short kickoffs led to two turnovers during returns. Punter Ryan Allen was the deservedly so AFC STs Player of the Week. He put six punts inside the 15-yard line and had zero return yardage on the day.<\/p>\n

Buffalo has a pair of very good kickers in Dan Carpenter and Colton Schmidt. The Bills always have excellent STs units and this season they\u2019ve added the dangerous former Bengal and Patriot Brandon Tate. He\u2019s averaging 17.0 yards per punt return and more than 24 yards on kickoffs.<\/p>\n

Next up, who wins and why\u2026<\/p>\n

Prediction:
\n<\/strong>This game is going to be another tough divisional game between two teams that know each other well. Getting off to a quick start is again a big factor for the Patriots. New England has outscored opponents 34-0 in the first quarter this season. If they can once again get off to a fast start it will go a long way in getting a victory.<\/p>\n

While I think that the game would be closer if Brissett were the QB rather than Garoppolo for NE, I think they\u2019ll win regardless. They\u2019re deeper and a better team overall than Buffalo.<\/p>\n

The Bills have to get their ground game going with McCoy and Taylor on Sunday. The Patriots have been good at stopping the run thus far year and especially if Hightower is back, they\u2019ll have a good chance of doing that again.<\/p>\n

The Patriots will want to do the same thing with Blount and essentially this game will be won or lost in the trenches. With better weapons in the passing game at the skill positions, this is where NE can separate themselves this week. Danny Amendola has had some big games against the Bills recently, and I look for him and Hogan to have a big game here. The Pats hold serve and improve to 4-0 in Brady\u2019s absence.
