Jamie Erdahl will work the sidelines. The game will also be aired on the Patriots flagship radio station 98.5 The SportsHub with Bob Socci and Scott Zolak on the call, produced by Marc Capello.

The Patriots (1-0) defeated the Arizona Cardinals 23-21 on Sunday Night Football as Jimmy Garoppolo was impressive in his first NFL start throwing for 264 yards and a touchdown. LeGarrette Blount ran for 70 yards and a touchdown. Arizona’s Chandler Catanzaro missed a 47-yard field goal with under a minute to go.

The Dolphins (0-1) lost to the Seattle Seahawks 12-6 when Russell Wilson connected with Doug Baldwin for a game-winning touchdown pass with less than a minute to go. Miami had chances to win with a field goal being blocked, a fourth and inches attempt failing from the Seattle 17-yard line and Kenny Stills dropping a sure-fire 71-yard score.

We here at PatsFans.com are continuing our “Razor’s Edge” column in 2016 to give some quick analysis on some of the key matchups of the game and what you can look for in how the game plays out.

Series History:
The Patriots and Dolphins will be meeting for the 102nd time with Miami holding an all-time 53-48 edge. The Patriots hold the all-time edge in home games 33-18 and hold a sizable advantage at Gillette Stadium where they are 12-2. The last three years have seen the series split along home lines with each team holding serve on their home field.

The Patriots crushed Miami 36-7 in Gillette and Miami dominated in a 20-10 win in the final regular season game of 2015.

Here is a look at some of the key matchups and who holds the Razor’s Edge.

First up is the Patriots offense:

Patriots RBs vs Dolphins Front Seven – Razor’s Edge Miami
The Patriots running game overall had a decent night in Arizona, rushing for 106 yards against a tough Cardinals defense. LeGarrette Blount accounted for 70 of those and none were bigger than his 8-yard touchdown run when he carried almost half of the Arizona defense into the end zone. But the offensive line struggled to open holes consistently and frequently Blount was hit in the backfield.

LaGarrett Blount scores an 8-yard touchdown run

Miami had one of the worst run defenses in the league a year ago, allowing 126.2 yards per game. With the addition of Mario Williams along the defensive line and Kiko Alonso at MLB, they’re looking to reverse that trend. They allowed 112 yards a week ago to the Seahawks but Seattle was a team that averaged over 150 in 2015.

The key here is patience, with Earl Mitchell, Ndamukong Suh, Cameron Wake in the front line, the Patriots will struggle to consistently run the ball. But they’ll have to stick with it, like a week ago and keep the defense honest. Blount is at his best in the 2nd and 4th quarters when defenses wear down. Getting off to a quick start is key for the offense.

Patriots WRs vs Dolphins Secondary – Razor’s Edge New England
The Patriots passing game was pretty effective against a very good Cardinals defense a week ago. Julian Edelman got things off to a quick start and Danny Amendola made a key 32-yard catch on their final scoring drive. Newcomers Chris Hogan and Malcolm Mitchell had impressive debuts in a New England uniform. The pass protection was good for the most part and Jimmy G. was able to move in the pocket to buy time.

Miami got three sacks against Russell Wilson which is impressive and they got consistent pressure on him until the final drive of each half, which coincidentally were scoring drives for Seattle. Suh, Williams, and Wake were all effective and they’re going to try to do the same against Garoppolo on Sunday.

They will have to if they want to win this matchup because even without Rob Gronkowski, who probably won’t play again this week, the Pats have plenty of weapons to attack the Miami secondary. Byron Maxwell and rookie Xavien Howard are the starting corners with Bobby McCain holding down the slot. Reshad Jones is among the better safeties in the NFL while Isa Abdul-Quddus is the free safety.

It all comes down to whether Garoppolo has time to throw because this is a matchup they can easily win. The Patriots have the versatility where they can move their receivers around to find favorable matchups. I’m looking for Edelman and RB James White to have big games this weekend for the Patriots passing game.

Next up the Miami offense:

Dolphins RBs vs NE Front Seven – Razor’s Edge New England
The Dolphins let Lamar Miller walk in free agency and the talented running back was never really properly utilized. They have Jay Ajayi who saw a bit of action in his rookie season, Damien Williams, Isiah Pead and rookie Kenyan Drake who are all backups. They signed Arian Foster who was a free agent from the Texans and he’s earned the starting role. Foster was a prolific back in Houston but age and injuries caught up with him. He may have lost a step in the running game but remains a very good receiver out of the backfield.

The Patriots made their plan to limit the talented David Johnson a week ago and other than one play where everything went south, they did just that. Johnson had 15 carries for just 44 yards before breaking that 45-yard run in the second half. New England has a good rotational group at defensive tackle with Malcom Brown, Alan Branch, Vincent Valentine and Anthony Johnson. The edge players, Chris Long and Jabaal Sheard were outstanding at setting the edge against Arizona. Jamie Collins is outstanding at filling the holes in run support. They’ll be without Dont’a Hightower who hasn’t practiced this week after injuring a knee on Sunday.

Chris Long looks to continue his strong play

Even without Hightower, the Patriots should have plenty of gap control to stop Foster from being a big factor in the running game. Rookie Elandon Roberts may see some action along with Shea McClellin, Jonathan Freeny, and Barkevious Mingo. The game plan here is to stop the run and force Tannehill into beating them.

Dolphins WRs vs NE Secondary- Razor’s Edge New England
Ryan Tannehill is on his third coach in a year, the carousel of coaches, coordinators and systems has to be mind boggling for the QB who enters an option year for the team in 2017. But the Dolphins seem to have found the right guy in Adam Gase who was called the “smartest guy I ever worked with” by Peyton Manning.

The Dolphins have plenty of weapons with Jarvis Landry, Kenny Stills, DeVante Parker and rookie Leonte Caroo as well as Foster out of the backfield. They’ll need Parker who’s been nursing an injury to play this week. The tight end position with Jordan Cameron and Dion Sims has to step up.

The Patriots secondary is deeper this year, starters Malcolm Butler, Logan Ryan, and Justin Coleman (slot) return at corner as do Devin McCourty and Pat Chung at safety but with the additions of Cyrus Jones, Jonathan Jones and Eric Rowe from Philly, the Pats have the ability to mix in their coverages much better. Collins and Mingo are athletic freaks at linebacker who can drop into coverage or blitz.

I’m looking for the edge players, Long, Sheard, and Trey Flowers to have an active game, pushing Tannehill out of his comfort zone and forcing some mistakes. Tannehill has thrown eight picks in eight career games against New England.

Special Teams- Razor’s Edge New England
The Patriots special teams get the edge in the kicking game, where Stephen Gostkowski is the best, most reliable kicker in the NFL. He was responsible in a very large way for the New England victory a week ago. And it didn’t all have to do with his scoring. Gostkowski was five for five hitting on all three FG attempts as well as both extra points but it was his kickoffs that made such a difference.

With the new rules in place placing the ball at the 25-yard line following a touchback, the Patriots made a concerted effort to force Arizona to return the kicks. Gostkowski was very effective at launching these short “mortar” kicks down close to the goal line. The hang time allowed the coverage units to stop the returns deep in Cardinals territory.

Gostkowski is clearly holding the edge over Andrew Franks for the Dolphins, who is still largely untested, attempting only 16 FGs a year ago.

Jakeem Grant had an impressive opener returning kicks for Miami, he’ll be a player to watch. Cyrus Jones is looking to step it up for the Pats, taking the heat off of Edelman and Amendola this season.

Next up, who wins and why…

Prediction:
This game is a divisional matchup so the teams know each other well. The Patriots will be without Tom Brady, Dion Lewis, Rob Ninkovich and probably Gronkowski and Hightower as well. That’s a lot of veteran production there.

The key for Jimmy Garoppolo and the Pats offense, like a week ago is getting off to a fast start. Look for the Patriots to spread them out in the passing game and find favorable matchups allowing Garoppolo to get the ball out quickly. Edelman and White will be key performers here. In his last four games against Miami, Edelman has 33 catches, 403 yards, and four touchdowns.

This one should be closer than if New England was up to full strength but Bill Belichick and the home team hold serve. Patriots 24-16

Follow me on Twitter @SteveB7SFG or email me at stevebpatsfans@gmail.com

Listen to our Patriots 4th and 2 podcasts on blog talk radio as the writers Russ Goldman, Derek Havens and I from PatsFans.com discuss the latest Patriots news Wednesdays at 12 noon.

The Patriots crushed Miami 36-7 and Miami dominated in a 20-10 win in the final regular season game of 2015.
