As the contract negotiations with Christian Gonzalez continue, it’s a reminder that this offseason will also be a big one for New England Patriots<\/strong><\/a> quarterback Drake Maye.<\/p>\n

Maye is currently in the third year of his own rookie deal, which will likely see the club pick up his fifth-year option next offseason with the intent of getting a long-term deal done to keep him in New England.<\/p>\n

The team took one of those steps with Gonzalez this offseason, with the Patriots picking up Gonzalez’s own fifth-year option.\u00a0 They’ve since been involved in trying to get a long-term deal done, with owner Robert Kraft going so far last week to say that they’ve offered a deal that would make him ‘the highest-paid player ever’<\/strong><\/a> at cornerback.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe love Christian Gonzalez. We love him as a player, as a person,\u201d said Kraft. \u201cThat\u2019s why we\u2019ve made an offer to him that makes him the highest-paid player ever to play that position in the NFL. And coincidentally, it\u2019s the highest contract in the Patriots franchise history.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo we\u2019re glad we drafted him, and he\u2019s developed here, and we hope he will be with us for a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n

While the two were spotted talking on the field last week, Gonzalez seemed a little uncomfortable with the owner speaking out.\u00a0 The veteran wouldn’t comment when reporters asked him about it last week, saying he had no intention of negotiating through the media.<\/p>\n

But the fact that a deal has yet to get done quietly remains a key point as the regular season continues inching closer.<\/p>\n

Gonzalez vs Maye: QB is the Priority<\/h3>\n

As important as keeping Gonzalez in the fold is, Maye is clearly going to have to be the team’s long-term priority.<\/p>\n

Having already gone through Cam Newton and using a draft pick on Mac Jones, the Patriots quickly found out how difficult finding a potential long-term answer at quarterback can be.\u00a0 There won’t ever be another Tom Brady, but finding someone else to compete at a high level is something that every club hopes – and is generally difficult – to find.<\/p>\n

So far, the team appears to have found one in Maye.\u00a0 He’s already exceeded expectations, having led his team to a Super Bowl while finishing as an MVP runner-up last year, and he’s only played two seasons in the NFL.<\/p>\n

He’s obviously someone you build a franchise around.\u00a0 As valuable as Gonzalez is, he’s more of a luxury than an absolute necessity.\u00a0 Teams can be competitive and win games with a franchise QB.\u00a0 Gonzalez already knows first-hand what it’s like to be on teams that don’t have one, having endured being a part of two straight 4-13 seasons.\u00a0 Maye didn’t start until Week 6 in 2024, and the club was already 1-4 at that point after Jacoby Brissett started things off during what became a disappointing 2024 Patriots Season<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 Bad coaching that year also certainly didn’t help.<\/p>\n

Still, elite cornerbacks can’t save bad quarterback play.\u00a0 Granted, they can put you over the top against great football teams, but it means little if you don’t have a quarterback who can put you in that position.<\/p>\n

Maye on Gonzalez’s Contract Standoff<\/h3>\n

We haven’t heard any real details behind the deal the team has offered Gonzalez or what his demands may be, but it’s certainly starting to feel like his agent is looking to break the bank when it comes to whatever the final numbers end up being.<\/p>\n

If that’s the case, it’s possible things could take a turn given that the team has Maye coming up, as well as a host of players who will see their contracts come to an end after this season.\u00a0 Investing in Maye will mean they’ll need to continue building around him, and that will be tough to do if a good percentage of their salary cap is tied up in two players.<\/p>\n

Maye was asked on Wednesday if, after seeing how these negotiations have gone with Gonzalez, whether or not it’s left him to wonder if he may need to wait for a new deal himself.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not thinking about that right now. I mean, I\u2019m a big fan of Gonzo and kind of how things are playing out,” said Maye.\u00a0 “So I respect him for being out here and competing and wanting to practice. I think that speaks a lot for him wanting to be here. And, I think, I\u2019ve said it before, he\u2019s one of the best corners in the league. So I\u2019m looking forward to playing with him, and I\u2019m glad he\u2019s on our team.\u201d<\/p>\n

When pressed, Maye said he’s just trying to live in the moment and he’s focused on getting ready for the season.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s hard to think about it. For me, I\u2019m trying to be in the present. Every day, the present\u2014 that\u2019s why they call it a present, man. It\u2019s a gift. So I just try to be here, be where my feet are, and try to get better and better.\u201d<\/p>\n

But while Maye might not want to think about it, it’s probably safe to say the Patriots are.\u00a0 That’s why even though the hope is that a deal gets done with Gonzalez in the coming weeks, it’s a complicated situation that remains one to watch given the implications.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
