There’s no better way to learn on the job than to get as much experience as possible, and quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo appears poised to get plenty of that as the Patriots get set for their preseason opener Thursday night against the New Orleans Saints.<\/p>\n
According to NFL Media’s Mike Garafolo, it looks like Bill Belichick will sit veteran quarterback Tom Brady for their first exhibition game of the year, giving more reps to Garoppolo as he continues preparing to start the first four games of 2016.<\/p>\n
Whether or not Brady gets any preseason snaps remains to be seen, but this plan isn’t that much different from past years where Brady saw limited action in the preseason. \u00a0Brady’s sat out an exhibition opener as recently as 2014,\u00a0which came\u00a0in a 23-6 road loss to Washington\u00a0where then-back-up\u00a0Ryan Mallett got\u00a0the starting nod in that game before Garoppolo eventually unseated him and Mallett was traded to the Texans.<\/p>\n
Garoppolo has been getting a lot of work so far during camp and he’s certainly had his ups and downs. \u00a0He started off strong in camp and has had some struggles in recent practices. \u00a0However, he still feels like things are moving along.<\/p>\n
“It’s kind of a feel thing,” said Garoppolo on Wednesday. \u00a0“You read their body language, you know what they’re going to do before they do it type of thing. I think as a quarterback, it’s a good feeling when, before the ball is even snapped, you know what this guy is going to do before he does it. It’s just a comforting feeling.<\/p>\n
Now he’ll \u00a0take the field Thursday night as he begins\u00a0taking actual game snaps with the first-team offense. \u00a0There’s certainly a little more of a sense of urgency, especially given\u00a0that it’s another chance to start polishing his craft\u00a0before they start playing meaningful games.<\/p>\n
While the final score won’t count, how Garoppolo plays certainly will and\u00a0he’s\u00a0looking forward to the opportunity,\u00a0even if it is just a preseason contest.<\/p>\n
“It’s always different on game day,” Garoppolo told the media Wednesday. \u00a0“It’s a different feel and everything. You get those butterflies in your stomach and all that. It’s awesome.”<\/p>\n
