{"id":68916,"date":"2026-06-11T04:30:49","date_gmt":"2026-06-11T08:30:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/?p=68916"},"modified":"2026-06-11T10:00:23","modified_gmt":"2026-06-11T14:00:23","slug":"morse-day-2-of-patriots-mini-camp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/2026\/06\/11\/morse-day-2-of-patriots-mini-camp\/","title":{"rendered":"MORSE: Day 2 of Patriots Mini-Camp"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong>Day Two of Mini-Camp<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><strong>Intensity Dialed Down<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Wednesday was a glorified walkthrough practice with no competitive periods.\u00a0 \u201cIt will look a little different today, just by design, as far as the pace that you will see,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/2026\/06\/10\/transcript-mike-vrabel-press-conference-6-10\/\"><strong>Vrabel said prior to practice<\/strong><\/a>. \u201cBut we will come back and get that same speed that we had yesterday further down in the red zone tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Day 1, Maye had an 18-second clock in which to get the play off.\u00a0 Maye used varying timing to get the play off, some well before the play clock expired, and others late in the play count.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Ponder Makes an Impression <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>One of the stars of the 1<sup>st<\/sup> two days has been EDGE Elijah Ponder.\u00a0 He had a sack and a pass breakup in Day 1.\u00a0 With Harold Landry sitting out, Ponder is getting 1<sup>st<\/sup> team reps.<\/p>\n<p>Position coach Mike Smith had some good things to say about Ponder.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019ve got very high expectations for him. Very,\u201d Smith said. \u201cAll these guys have done great all spring, but he really, really looks comfortable out there. It has really slowed down for him. And again, we\u2019re June 9th or 10th, but I got high expectations for him. He\u2019s always gonna fight. He\u2019s not gonna say much. He\u2019s very intelligent. When you\u2019re very intelligent like that, he\u2019s big. He\u2019s as athletic. He\u2019s done some kind of freaky stuff the spring around the edge, the top of his rush that you\u2019re like, \u2018Oh, wow, that\u2019s pretty nice to see.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Team Building<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>On the blocking sleds, Vrabel has posted these slogans:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBelief and identity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPush the pile.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinish longer than the guy with the ball.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Brian Hines of Pats Pulpit, the largest competitive period of the day came during the final session of practice, when players (from various position groups) split into their \u201cfamily groups\u201d of roughly six and raced to push wooden sleds 40 yards.\u201d\u00a0 One group from the family would push for 20 yards, and then the second group would jump in and finish the last 20 yards.<\/p>\n<p>From Mark Daniels of Mass Live, \u201cMaye said the exercise was part of a larger team-bonding exercise that Vrabel came up with this offseason. The Patriots coach split the team into several groups called families. Players from different position groups are put together to learn more about their teammates and compete in challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Absent from Practice<\/strong> \u2013 Harold Landry (coming back from Knee surgery), Morgan Moses (vet maintenance and he was hurt in the last OTA), and Gabe Jacas (Off-Season Surgery).<\/p>\n<p>Jacas is the lone remaining 2<sup>nd<\/sup> round selection in the league that hasn\u2019t signed his contract.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Brown Miscue Leads to Team Unity<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>A.J. Brown\u00a0had the entire\u00a0Patriots\u00a0roster doing pushups last week, according to wide receivers coach Todd Downing.<\/p>\n<p>Chris Brown of Mass Live wrote, \u201cIn Brown\u2019s second practice, the Pro Bowl wideout dropped a go ball. Following the session, he wanted to atone for the mistake. (Brown) wanted to do pushups for the drop in front of the group and everybody chose to do it together, Downing said.\u00a0 So, creating and augmenting that culture of mutual accountability, I think, has been awesome.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Lomu\u2019s Versatility<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>\u201cHe is getting a lot of reps. I love the versatility,\u201d Vrabel said. \u201cHis flexibility and versatility has been something that I think has stood out. He learns quickly, usually doesn\u2019t make the same mistake twice. And it is different, so the guys that you are trying to put in different places and say, \u2018You have got to get as much reps on the left as you do on the right,\u2019 that\u2019s important. So, he has done a nice job of that.\u201d\u00a0 Lomu is getting 1<sup>st<\/sup> team reps at Right Tackle in Moses absence.\u00a0 He also switched to Left Tackle with the second unit.\u00a0 Then he played some Guard again today.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Bale Back at Practice on Day 2<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>It was interesting that the team brought back Punter David Bale for a second day.\u00a0 That\u2019s unusual for a two-day UDFA tryout.\u00a0 So far, they have not added him to the roster yet!\u00a0 \u00a0Alex Barth claimed that Bale had two booming punts (5.25 and 5.05 second hang time).<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Vrabel Throws Shade on Bringing Back Stefon Diggs<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>He wouldn\u2019t rule out the possibility of bringing him back, but said they are happy with the WR room as it is constituted. \u00a0That may be in case they have a catastrophic injury to one of the top WRs. \u00a0Diggs would have to lower his contract requirements and accept a smaller role in the offense.\u00a0 As he is older, another factor might be that he wants to play for a team that has a chance to play in the playoffs.\u00a0 He would be no better than the #3 receiver on this team, and he would probably get only 45% of the snaps at best.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Media at the Patriots Mini-Camp<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The Patriots issued 70 media credentials for the Mini-Camp.\u00a0 Security was tight due to the upcoming FIFA World Cup soccer tournament.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Douglas Has Been the Top WR This Spring<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Patriots WR coach Todd Downing on DeMario Douglas in Year 2 of this offense: &#8220;I would say he&#8217;s really doing a good job with decision-making routes. So, if there&#8217;s a decision to be made, whether it&#8217;s a choice route or a post or a cross&#8230; he&#8217;s making decisions quickly and correctly. And that&#8217;s a really valuable piece of this offense.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Drake Maye had this to say about Douglas.\u00a0 \u201cSince I got here as a rookie, he always just does the right thing. He does the right thing, makes the right plays, makes catches. He\u2019s hard to cover\u2026 You can\u2019t guard him in a phone booth\u2026 He\u2019s so good at breaking off of man coverage. He\u2019s a mismatch. He\u2019s so hard to stay in front of. Looking forward to kinda seeing his role grow bigger.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Douglas on AJ Brown<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Pop Douglas said it feels like A.J.
