Brown earlier, and the Eagles GM basically asked for trade offers for him yesterday and if that’s something he might kick the tires on?

“Well, I think that we’ll look at everything that we can possibly look at to add to our roster. Again, there’s a lot of things that go into trades. There’s a lot of back and forth and taking on compensation. I’m sure there’ll be a lot of opportunities for us to talk about trades, not only this week, but as we prepare and get closer to the draft. Those are things when time ramps up.”

On how difficult it is to find a number one receiver, especially when not a lot of them hit free agency:

“Well, yeah. They’re not going to be there in free agency. But you have to try to draft them. I think that’s where a lot of them are. You develop them. Some of them develop. Guys, that transition in that position from year one to year two can be pretty special. It’s a lot for these guys. And again, they go from the Combine and the Combine training to maybe not running as many routes or understanding defense. And once they get out there in training camp, they realize this isn’t Combine training. And coverages change. And things that look like man coverage now become zone coverage, and things that are zone coverage now become match coverage. And there’s just a lot of volume for that particular position. Excited to see where guys like Kyle Williams go from year one to year two, and just his development and his growth, mentally and physically.”

On if he views Williams as that kind of of player who could develop into a number one [receiver]:

“Well, I’m not going to say that. I just know that I’m excited about seeing where he goes from year one to year two. It’s a fantastic place. The ability to adjust down the field on a deep ball. He’s got really good release skills. You saw what the crossing route was against Tampa Bay and his ability to create an X-play that was a maybe 10 or 12-yard pass. So I’m not going to sit there and say, ‘Oh, these guys, it’s going to be the number one receiver, edge rusher.’ We’re just excited that he’s with us and what he showed us. And his attitude was fantastic. And we’ll have to help him get to reach his potential.”

On if it’s a priority to try to extend Christian [Gonzalez] this offseason?

“Well, it’s a priority to extend and keep all our best players. That’s the obligation that we have to the team. That’s what our coaches want. That’s what our personnel people want. That’s what Robert and Jonathan want, that’s what our fans want. So we have to draft them and figure out a way to develop the guys that we draft, and then ultimately, resign them. So what the timing of that looks I don’t know. I know that that’ll be all part of the equation moving forward. I really enjoyed just our relationship and how he and I had to put some time into it. Again, there’s a lot of trust that goes along with certain guys. I watched him continue to get better and improve as the season wore on. I asked him if he wanted to be a captain. Is that something that he strives to be? I want to help him try to get there, to use his ability and his instincts and his knowledge to help the guys next to him.”

On looking broadly at the offensive line, how does he look at where you might be able to improve up front:

“Again, that is something that, whether that’s the defensive line or the offensive line, I don’t think you could have too many guys that can protect the most important piece of your team offensively. Again, we got some really good efforts from the guys, and then we’re going to need some better efforts. We need competition. I know that competition makes everybody better. That’s something that I know that we will want to do, is to try to provide competition at all those spots, and know that you look at a guy like Morgan Moses, what his expectations in a training camp are going to be. I don’t know, but I know that he’s not going to be taking every single rep. That would be crazy, the way that he was able to go out there and play for us and contribute, but also knowing where he is in his career. That’s a position that I would say not only us, but that the league needs to figure out how to develop. You look at some of these numbers, whether they’re mobile quarterbacks or not, quarterbacks are scrambling more this year than they ever have in the past. I don’t think they want to scramble on purpose. We got to find guys that we can develop and what those rules are and how do we develop young offensive linemen to be able to play and protect our most valuable asset.”

On the fact that after the draft last year, Eliot said that he viewed center as the best position for Jared Wilson and how is he approaching finding the best spot for him:

“Well, he said that last year after the draft?”

Yes.

“Yeah, and again, so you see how that turned out, right? I mean, I don’t want to make any guarantees. I hope nobody in our organization wants to make any guarantees. We’re going to try to play with the best five, and we’re going to try to put our players in the best situation for them. Sometimes we also ask them to maybe do what’s best for the football team in order to get the best five, or in order to get the best three receivers, or in order to get the best D-line combination. That’s what we’ll continue to do. Jared worked at both positions. We asked him to prepare as a starter each week at center, even though he didn’t have to. I’m sure that he’ll do the same thing when we start April 20th.”

On with the understanding that there’s obviously some uncertainty there with Christian [Barmore]’s situation legally, how much, if at all, does that play into his decision about him:

“Christian Barmore? Yeah. I think those are things that you’d have to look at them separately, again, we want to make sure that these are just, in fact, accusations. We want to make sure that we have the right people on this football team. That’s the first thing that we want to do, that I want to make sure that the people on this football team are the ones that we want on there that share the same beliefs and the same work ethic and the same values help us build an identity again. Then we’ll evaluate the player for the player. Whenever any of those things come to light or there’s a decision, and we know more information, then we’ll make a decision on that.”

On the fact Eliot joked a little bit that he needed to get to a safe space to watch the Super Bowl, and if he’s back and watched it from an instructional standpoint or just casual standpoint:

“Yeah, I watched the game on the flight home. There’s no safe space. Again, we didn’t play good enough to win. I’ve tried to find a way to move… I got a job to do. I got a responsibility to this organization to make sure that we’re moving forward, that we’re pushing forward, that we’re finding ways to improve, that we’re finding ways to develop, the coaching staff, the players, take care of the guys that need to get some rehab and surgeries. I can’t spend a whole lot of time on something that I can’t change, even though I wish I could.”

On the fact he mentioned earlier he was looking for new ideas from your coaches and in the postseason, they saw some defenses that are really good at disguise…

“Yeah, that’s what I was alluding to when I was talking about the receiver or some things like that.”

On if there’s anything that he feels they could change that might make Drake’s life easier when it comes to playing those kinds of defenses:

“No, it’s about seeing it. It’s about everybody seeing it through the same set of eyes. If you want to say, Yeah, we have route conversions, which a lot of people do. We do. That’s no surprise. But there’s two people that have to see it the same, the quarterback and the receiver. Those are things we will continue to work on. I don’t think that’s a new idea or a new concept. But those are the things that I guess I was talking about you want to enhance. How do we make that better? How do we make a core concept better? Formations, motions, whatever it may be, but it’s still the same concept. Now, what is it within that that we want to try to do that’s maybe a little different? Again, we can’t have 20 of them per personnel group, but maybe everybody has one idea, and we pick a couple that kind of work in the past game, in a run game, screen game. How do we move the pocket with the quarterback? All these different things that build up your first and second down offense.”

On if he would you ever ask Josh [McDaniels] to adjust how he coaches the position, and the fact there was a big conversation, league-wide, pure progression versus reading coverage, it’s so hard to read coverage, is it possible to do the thing that Josh has taught for a long time:

“I just think that we’ve got answers where maybe they roll and we don’t want to throw into a roll corner. Again, these are all things that everybody has to see. I don’t have to tell anybody to teach anything. Again, the beauty of coaching is that you believe in something and that you have answers and you give the players answers, but it’s what the players, what you can get them to believe in. There’s a lot of different ways to do it. Talked about there not being any gurus. You go out here, ‘Oh, this guy is the best quarterback’s coach.’ This guy is this best pass rushing coach.’ Not for nothing, but there’s no guru. These ideas are all getting traded and taken, and it’s what you can get the players to believe in and trust.”

On how much modern innovation would he say there’s been in the league in the last few years:

“Modernization?”

Innovation, I’m sorry.

“Innovation. Every day. The technology that we have, the fact that you guys, as people that are associated with the team, can watch the same TV or the same coaches copy that we can. That’s a start. The personnel that we use, the techniques. Technique is always evolving. Analytics, the numbers behind what we do, is something that’s new. It’s different, I guess. We’ve always had numbers, but I think some of that is certainly taken to a different level. Did you have anything else specifically that you want to talk about so that I’m not just rambling?”

On the fact that every year there’s some defensive system or offensive game where people say, ‘Oh, we’ve never seen this before.’

“Well, yeah. I think some of that is being able to modify what you do, and here’s your core concepts, and how do you change it? How do you make it different but still be a hook-curl? How do you still make this a half field, but not start at a half field, or send another player to the half field?”

On the fact that last year, he said he wanted Drake to work on his leadership, being more vocal, and heading into year three, is there something he’d like him to focus on:

“Just continue that development and taking an active role. Instead of me or Josh making corrections, I think that’s something that Drake wants to be able to do is correct himself, but also the players that are out there with him. Something that I think is … and that goes throughout the team. It’s just trying to hold each other accountable. That’s always when you know what you have as a good football team or one that has potential, is that they’re close enough and they’re knowledgeable enough that they could hold each other accountable.”

On if when he looks at the roster, if he sees it’s something that’s most missing that you’d like to address your trade?

“I’m the same way every year. We’re trying to do what we can when we can to make each position competitive. Field a roster that has competition in each position. I go back to one year, got to training camp, and I called Jen, and I said, ‘Hey, there’s seven linebackers that started.’ She said, ‘Well, you better have a good camp.’ That was a good message and a good reminder. It always ended up working, but made everybody better, got people in the right spots, guys had roles. I think that’s just a good reminder of what we have to try to do is to try to provide competition at each and every spot so that we don’t have complacency and that we’re building depth and getting these guys to truly believe like they’re preparing as a starter.”

On how he got to know of B. J. Edmonds and what prompted him to bring him in:

“Well, he did a fantastic job in the summer in the minority internship program. I would say that I’ve always tried be really intentional with the people that we bring in for that internship. Go back to Tennessee, Clint McMillan did a minority internship. Really, really quickly did we realize, ‘Hey, man, this is a guy that we would like to have with us for the season.’ Stretch came and said, ‘Hey, these guys…’. I said, ‘Man, what is this? Vince Lombardi or somebody? Like, these guys, everybody’s begging to have Clint McMillan?’ And I said, ‘Okay, we’re going to Chicago, and we have a preseason game. If you can get to Tallahassee, pack your s**t up and get back here by the time we get back, you can stay for the season.’ And so we got back, and he was sitting in there waiting for us. And so he did the season with us as a QC coach. Then he ended up being an assistant D-line coach, and now we’re able to hire him here. But I’ve put Clint in charge of vetting through some of these applications because I’m like, ‘Listen, you know what it took, and you know the type of coach that we’re looking at. Justin Hamilton did the minority internship with us, and now he’s a position coach for us. Ashton Grant did this program in Cleveland. They tried to be very intentional with that because it’s a four or five-week interview. Some of those coaches we weren’t able to hire as quality control coaches once the internship ran out. But we still know the job that they did. When there’s an opportunity that presents itself, we were able to, ‘Hey, we really like this coach,’ and bring them back and hopefully continue to help them and provide opportunities.”

On the competition committee if there’s anything he’s trying to pound the table for this year:

“I’m just getting caught up right now, to be honest. I know I hate to say to be honest. I’m always honest with you guys. I’m just trying to get caught up and figure out what we need to do to help the game. There’s not a lot of rule proposals. I think there’s some things we need to clean up, things that we can do, certainly to help officiating and replay and all those things that we talked about at the podium. So nothing that I think is earth-shattering, but I want to just try to help. Right now, I’m just gathering information.”

On the fact Christian Gonzalez and the possibility for an extension there, Drake’s going to be eligible for one next year, and with those things maybe on the horizon, if that impacts how he’ll approach this offseason, with what they might be able to spend:

“I don’t think I can answer that question right now. I don’t. I would imagine that we will try to do everything that we can to add to our roster, knowing that we have responsibilities to contracts in the future, but also we’ve given the opportunity to add good players. I hope that we would be able to do that. That’s nothing that I’ve been informed of. If that’s what you’re looking at, that’s nothing that I’ve been informed of at this point. Draft good players, develop them and resign them, and then be able to add the right people at the right time through free agency.”

On how much age plays a factor when it comes to his evaluation process and scouting, specifically older players that are potential top pick candidates:

“You mean, is this a quarterback that you’re talking about?”

There’s some older edge rushers, like 25-year-olds who are going to be taking the first couple of rounds.

“I got drafted when I was 21, so I probably wasn’t any good until I was 25, so that probably would have been good. I think you just have to look at the wear and tear on their body and what it looks like. How many snaps, how many injuries? I haven’t given it a whole lot of thought. Quarterbacks play longer, but we’ll have to look at each and every case as it is. Maybe they’re a little bit more ready to come in and play right away, or maybe it’s a younger player that takes a year to develop. Something to consider. It is. It’s just not one that I’ve done since the end of the season, looking at the guys that we’ve interviewed up to this point.”

On [K’Lavon] Chaisson, [Khryis] Tonga, [Vederian] Lowe, and if there are any thoughts at this point on those guys:

“Not yet. I think that, again, I’m very thankful of their contributions. Each of those players that you mentioned had a very unique contribution to our football team and to our success. There is no way around it. With that comes an opportunity for them in their particular situation. Would love to have them all back, but we know that that’s not always the case in the National Football League. We’ll see where those conversations go. Obviously, I thank those players and all the free agents that helped us win 17 games and compete for a championship.”

(EDITOR’S NOTE: This transcript was done based on the available footage and is subject to typographical errors.
