Here’s what Los Angeles Chargers head coach John Harbaugh had to say during his press conference on Wednesday, January 7, 2026 ahead of Los Angeles’ Wild Card playoff game againast the New England Patriots<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

On if he has any update on the injured players:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Sure, I’ll give them all to you.\u00a0 Elijah Molden will practice. Jamaree Salyer will practice. Bradley Bozeman will practice. Dante Jackson will practice. Omarion Hampton will not practice today. Bud Dupree will not practice today. KeAndre Lambert-Smith will not practice today. Kendall Williamson will not practice today, and we’ve opened Tucker Fisk’s window this week, so he’ll be out there as well.”<\/p>\n

Modlen, Salyer, Bozeman, Jackson will practice?<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Correct.”<\/p>\n

Hampton, Dupree, Williamson will not practice?<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Correct. And Keandre [Lambert-Smith].”<\/p>\n

On how Omari is doing with his ankle injury:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“He’s doing everything and anything he can to get back and progressing.”<\/p>\n

On Jamaree [Salyer], if he’s available, if he’s going to start at tackle:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Yeah, the starters will be the starters, and he would start.”<\/p>\n

On his thoughts on John [Harbaugh] and his ending in Baltimore:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Yeah. John Harbaugh is the best Coach I know, best coach I’ve ever seen. And you may say, ‘Okay, well, I’m his brother, so I might be biased.’ But then you have somebody like Tony Dungy. Wouldn’t we all like that? Wouldn’t we all like somebody like Tony Dungy, especially Tony Dungy himself, to say that? It’s great seeing that kind of outpouring and of support. Also, just so cool to see all my brother’s accomplishments and be recognized for that. As I told him, whatever team he goes to is going to be formidable. And I just hope it’s in the NFC.”<\/p>\n

On if he’s talked to him:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Yeah.\u00a0 I talk to my brother all the time.”<\/p>\n

On where his head was at:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Just exactly the way he said it yesterday, which was always a lot of gratitude and first class all the way. But, could tell. He’ll be attacking with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind the next opportunity, and there’ll be a team. It’ll be like a gift. Have the best coach. One of the best coaches ever. Best coach I know.”<\/p>\n

On if there’s any chance he joins him here:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“He’ll be a head coach next year.\u00a0 We’ll be playing against him in some form or fashion. And just, as I said, hope that’s in the NFC.”<\/p>\n

On if he’s surprised that he got let go?<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Yeah. As were many.”<\/p>\n

On Justin Herbert the season he’s had and his toughness, and how much he wants im to get some playoff success on his resume:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Oh, yeah. He’s had a tremendous season. Very MVP caliber in every way. Every time, every game, he’s one that’s leading us to victory, willing us to victory. Just doing anything and everything he can for this team and he does it at the level of, only reserved for the very best in the game to do. It’s been a tremendous year for him.”<\/p>\n

“Yeah, that’s our focus, winning this week. It’ll be tough. Two great quarterbacks going against each other this week. I’m sure the more they watch Justin, they realize, ‘Wow, he’s even better than we thought he was. That’s the feeling I get watching Drake Maye. I know he’s good. I mean, these numbers are over 70%, but the more you watch, wow, he’s even better than I thought. I’m sure New England has the same feeling watching the tape, but tremendous.”<\/p>\n

On the fact his admiration for Justin has always been through the roof and his praise for him, and if he learned anything about him this past year that even maybe elevated your respect for him:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Yeah, that’s a pretty long list. It was almost Omar, I’d say, weekly. Maybe you all documented it, but every time I think, ‘Justin can’t possibly go up any higher in my esteem.’ Then each week, there’s another rung, there’s another rung, there’s another rung. To the point where, ‘Wow, I think I’m at the point where, and I’ve said it already, I think he’s the best there ever was.'”<\/p>\n

On the fact he’s been coaching for a long time but looking at this regular season after the postseason, if he learned anything about himself with the injuries, adversity that this team specifically had to get through to get to the playoffs here this season:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“About myself? Yeah. No, not about myself. I think it just reconfirmed what I know about these guys who play NFL football. I mean, they’re mighty men. They’re modern-day warriors. I don’t know if I can say that. Gladiators. I mean, it is what it is. But yeah … there’s one that you’re disappointed for. They put so much hard work into it, but then now there’s another that is having an opportunity and seizing it, and they don’t think of themselves as backups. I know I didn’t when I was in that position. ‘Let me get out there. Let me play.’ And watch them prepare, work, and then go lay it on the line. It just reconfirms everything that I’ve always thought and want for our team is competitors, welcome. Competitors and playmakers. We’ve got them. Since the guys have done that, have been in there playing and equipping themselves great and showing what they can do, it’s almost like you go into it, ‘Wait till they get a load of me,’ kind of feeling. Then, to watch if we can do it, that bodes really well for our team. I’d say that just reconfirmed how much respect we have for these guys that play this game.”<\/p>\n

On the fact in the locker room, the Ted sign now has cutouts of faces, and what that is about:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“That’s the 14 that have not missed a day. That’s perfect attendance. If you got a certificate in school, that would be perfect attendance that they didn’t miss a practice. They were available every day to practice.”<\/p>\n

On if that’s just regular season or if it goes back to …<\/strong><\/p>\n

“I think they go back to training camp.\u00a0It starts anew at training camp, and then there’ll be an off-season one.”<\/p>\n

They have 100% in the block of granite population.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Yeah, they get those Ted points for a block of granite also.”<\/p>\n

On the fact they have one of the best records in the league in one-score games, and what he feels they do intangibly that led to that success in those tight games:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Never give up, never give in, never quit mentality.”<\/p>\n

On if that’s the type of players that he’s assembled on the team, and if that’s something he instills every day, giving them message and how does he develop that:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“That’s the player. When I talk about player-led, that’s their intangibles. That’s led by the elite, best players that work the hardest. That’s the way it is on our team, that care the most, and then that becomes infectious throughout the entire\u2026 Contagious would be a better word. Yeah, contagious or infectious throughout the entire team.”<\/p>\n

On if he talks to the players, they would give him some credit in terms of the messaging of, ‘Have your best when your best is needed,’ and how often does he say that, and if he agrees with the players at all that he’s had something to do with the mentality in those moments?<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Humility would prevent me from doing that, really. But maybe just a little head nod. Certainly not a deep long bow. The deep long bow would be to Justin, Derwin, K-Mac, Zion. I could keep going. If I must. If I must.”<\/p>\n

On what he saw from Kyle Kennard in this game on Sunday, getting some extended run:<\/p>\n

“Saw growth. Just keep continuing building and going in that direction.”<\/p>\n

On going into the playoffs, what gives him the most confidence with Jesse [Minter]’s game plan on that side of the ball:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Really, all the… Starts with the players. Then it’s Jesse’s ability and our defensive coaches’ ability to put them in spots to make plays, to be most effective, the understanding of the defense, and know that some wrinkles as well.”<\/p>\n

“Yeah, those things mainly. But also, I mean, also the confidence would be very player-driven and very coach-driven, outstanding in our scheme and the way it’s coached and taught from the Mike Elston and the defense on the line. Clink [Steve Clinkscale] and Adam [Fuller] on the back-end, Dylan [Roney] and Coach Bowman and Rick Minter, and just really all the coaches over there, and Jesse’s the one that leads it all. But it’s tight, it’s sound. The scheme is good, it’s great, and our players know it. Coaches do a great job of putting the players in position to be successful. And players, a lot of them could coach it. They know it so well. So a lot of confidence in our defense.”<\/p>\n

On the offensive line and the fact he said it would be the starters, and it would be Trey [Pipkins] at right tackle?<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Yeah.”<\/p>\n

Mekhi [Becton] at right guard?<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Yeah.\u00a0 Boza center.”<\/p>\n

Those two I can figure out:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Left guard?”<\/p>\n

Zion Johnson<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Yeah.”<\/p>\n

“[Laughs]”<\/p>\n

“That was a softball. It’s a softball for you.”<\/p>\n

Can I return the favor?<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Sure.”<\/p>\n

“Sorry. I do like those, by the way. The ones that just hit right out of the park.<\/p>\n

On if he thinks playoff experience matters with his players, and are there lessons that they can take from last year, having gone through that experience that his guys can apply this year:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Yeah, I think so. It’s just experience of not playing in the playoffs. You’re in the playoffs. It’s somebody telling you what it’s going to be like, ‘Hey, here’s what it’s going to be like. I mean, this game is going to start like nothing you’ve ever seen. There are going to be bodies flying around. They’re running around. It’s like with their hair on fire. Hit something. Hit somebody, who’s ever moving. Ask questions later.’ That’s what was told to me going into my first playoff game. Then, after I played my first playoff game, then I was the guy telling guys that hadn’t been in a playoff game that. It’s the coolest chaos of football right from the opening kickoff.”<\/p>\n

On who told him that: <\/strong><\/p>\n

“It was Dan Hampton. Wow, how about the memory there?”<\/p>\n

That’s pretty good.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Yeah, that was Dan Hampton, the great Dan Hampton.”<\/p>\n

On the fact he described Mike Vrabel and his team and how they play like he played, and if he would be able to say that maybe the Chargers team plays how he played:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“I hope not. Truly, honestly, it’s one heck of a lot better. But I have said that. That’s documented on record.”<\/p>\n

On the fact what he loves about a playoff week leading up to a game:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“It just reminds me of when you’re a kid, and it’s the summer, and you go down to Pattengill Elementary School. They had the basketball court there, the metal rims, chain nets. And by nine o’clock, you had to have your team ready and you played another team. Then you played until you got beat. If you got beat, then you had to go off and form a new team. But the goal was to play to lunch. Start at 9:00 and be able to play all the way through lunch. Then you go eat lunch, and then you could be the first team back on the court when we started back up in the afternoon. But yeah, it just reminds me of that. Pick up basketball, kids, it wasn’t even organized the league or anything like that.\u00a0 But it was all right there, same as, in a nutshell. Win and keep playing. Win and play somebody else. When you lost, you had to go form a new team. You had to get yourself on another team to have ‘next.’<\/p>\n

On the fact there’s some head coach openings and the fact he’s talked before about how highly he thinks of Jesse and how he thinks he would fit well in that role in the NFL, and what specifically about him does he think would make him a good head coach in the league:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Just really everything. All the things. Tremendous knowledge of the game. Great team, teammate. I can just… Just works so well with the general manager, head coach, relationship is going to be tremendous with him. That’s really important. Just his ability to motivate, just all aspects … teacher. It’s always about the team. There’s no ego there. Self-promoting, I think that’s really important in the team environment. But check every box. You got a box to check? Check it with Jesse. I know I’ve said that many times, and he’s had … several have reached out interview requests. So no surprise.<\/p>\n

On if he remembers anything specific about his battles on the field with Vrabel:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“No, not really. Not specific. My mind used to be a steel trap. It’s an aluminum trap now. I did remember Dan Hampton.”<\/p>\n

On the fact he tackled him once:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“One time? Sack or …”<\/p>\n

Not a sack. One yard run.<\/p>\n

One yard run?<\/p>\n

1997.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“That’s cool. That’s cool. It’s okay. When Ray Lewis went in the Hall of Fame, he had a sack on me that they kept playing throughout that ceremony. It was like, ‘Yeah, okay. I made it on there. I’m on the tape.'”<\/p>\n
