Nick Sirianni<\/strong>, with the Eagles head coach having had no prior relationship with him.<\/p>\nOther than shining at various moments on special teams this preseason, Baker’s resume certainly shouldn’t impress anyone.\u00a0 \u00a0He caught just 5-of-15 (33%) of his targets for 56 yards last preseason in 2024, and was just 1-of-11 (9%) this preseason for 13 yards.<\/p>\n
Overall, he’s a combined 6-of-26 (23%) over his two preseasons for 69 yards.\u00a0 He was just 1-of-4 during the regular season last year, with his one reception coming in the finale in Week 18.<\/p>\n
In order to stick with a team on the 53 man roster, you either need to be a solid depth player, and if you’re not, you need to be an outstanding special teams player.<\/p>\n
It’s difficult to categorize Baker that way.\u00a0 He’s certainly not at the level that\u00a0Matthew Slater<\/strong> was, who was just 1-of-8 during the regular season as a receiver, but was obviously outstanding on special teams.\u00a0 That allowed the club to overlook Slater’s shortcomings in the passing game.<\/p>\nAnother player that Baker also doesn’t measure up against was a former 7th-round pick in 1999.\u00a0 Anyone who remembers former Patriot Sean Morey<\/strong> likely recalls that Morey, who was a scrappy receiver out of Brown, was at least someone who made some terrific grabs with former Pats QB Michael Bishop<\/strong> during the preseason, but couldn’t quite stick here.<\/p>\nMorey went on to become a standout special teams player in Philadelphia, while eventually also playing for both Pittsburgh and Arizona.\u00a0 Unlike Baker, Morey was at least also a more viable and consistent player as a wide receiver, which enhanced his value.<\/p>\n
Whether or not Baker can eventually reach the level of a more complete player remains to be seen.\u00a0 But to move on from a place where he had the head coach in his corner is puzzling, and it could be a decision he may ultimately regret.<\/p>\n

(PHOTO: Eric Canha-Imagn Images)<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n4) Florio Believes In Vrabel:<\/strong> Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk joined\u00a0Felger & Masserrotti on 98.5 The Sports Hub<\/em> earlier this week, and he believes that the Patriots have the right guy in Vrabel heading into this season.<\/p>\n“Well, I think that you’ve got the right coach,” said Florio. “I think Mike Vrabel was always destined to coach the Patriots. I was surprised that they didn’t make a beeline for him last year after he was fired by the Tennessee Titans. But then we came to learn of the agreement that they had in place to give the job to Jerod Mayo<\/strong>. But it just felt like a matter of time before he coached the team.”<\/p>\nFlorio sees Vrabel as someone who has a similar coaching style to former coach Bill Belichick<\/strong>, but as a former player, he seems to also have the right approach in the locker room.\u00a0 That’s one of the main reasons Florio feels the Patriots could be a playoff team this season, with the only question being how they might fare against the better teams in the Conference.<\/p>\n“He seems like the perfect coach for the team,” said Florio.\u00a0 “The right blend of Bill Belichick and Bill Parcells<\/strong>, the right attitude, the right approach. It’s a question of getting the right players, and that’s the key. The cupboard has been relatively bare compared to the great years of the past, but I think they’re on the right track.”<\/p>\n“And look, with seven teams per conference in the postseason and 17 games, it’s easier than it’s ever been to win enough games to get one of the playoff spots. And the Patriots definitely are a team that could win enough games this year to get to the postseason. And then next year the goal would be to build on it, not that they would surrender when they finally get to the playoffs.”<\/p>\n
“The question is, will the team be good enough to beat the best of the best in the AFC? But I think they can absolutely get to the playoffs this year.”<\/p>\n
The other concern Florio has is whether or not Vrabel will be able to get the club off to a good start to begin the 2025 Regular Season.\u00a0 But he seems to like rookie TreVeyon Henderson<\/strong>, who he feels should play a key role in how far the team might go this season.<\/p>\n“I think a lot of it is Vrabel and that Vrabel is going to get the team ready to play week in and week out,” said Florio.\u00a0 “He’s going to make good decisions in games. He’s going to know how to press guys’ buttons to get the most out of them. He’s going to coach this team into a better product than the various parts would suggest.”<\/p>\n
“And then you got TreVeyon Henderson, who I think they’re already carving his Hall of Fame bust. So that’ll help open up the passing game. If he ends up being the running back that maybe he’s shown flashes he could be, that really can open up a passing game because it draws extra safety to the line of scrimmage. It gets you better matchups in the secondary you can, and you can work the play action game to perfection.”<\/p>\n
“So you know, I know running backs need blocking, but Barry Sanders<\/strong> didn’t get much, and he did well. Not that I’m comparing TreVeyon Henderson to him, but there is a hope and an expectation that they may have gotten a potentially great running back.
