Day 4 of Patriots Training Camp <\/strong>was another 90-minute practice.\u00a0 This was the last mandated conditioning practice and was conducted in helmets, shorts, and shells.<\/p>\n

Morgan Moses, Rhamondre Stevenson,<\/strong> and Carlton Davis<\/strong> didn\u2019t come on the field until after the initial individual position drills were completed.\u00a0 Moses and Stevenson competed in 11 on 11s, but Davis just rode the stationary bike (in uniform).<\/p>\n

No change to the PUP or NFI players.<\/p>\n

Injury<\/strong> \u2013 Jahlani Tavai<\/strong> had some type of injury and was led off the field by trainers and didn\u2019t return.<\/p>\n

Maye Inaccurate Throwing Downfield\u00a0 <\/strong><\/h3>\n

Unlike previous practices, Drake Maye<\/strong> concentrated on throwing the ball downfield.\u00a0 All QBs are less accurate when throwing downfield.\u00a0 He was 8 of 17 in 11 on 11 with two drops.\u00a0 The best play of the day and probably of all practices was an escape by Maye against pressure and a rollout right.\u00a0 Pop Douglas was running an out-route and turned it upfield when Maye escaped the pocket.\u00a0\u00a0 Douglas beat Kyle Dugger for a 50-yard TD.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to see Dugger as a deep safety \u2013 he has no instincts for the position and takes bad angles. \u00a0 Javon Baker<\/strong> and Efton Chism<\/strong> got some plays with the 1st<\/sup> team and Drake Maye.<\/p>\n

Pop Douglas Popped<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Not only did he have that big 50-yard bomb, but he had 3 other catches to lead the wide receivers.\u00a0 Stephon Diggs had a quiet day and wasn\u2019t targeted much.\u00a0 Javon Baker had a big 60-yard TD catch from Josh Dobbs.\u00a0 TreVeyon Henderson<\/strong> is going to be fun to watch.\u00a0 Josh McDaniels is looking to get Henderson in space and let his legs do the talking.\u00a0 Henderson had 4 catches and a drop.\u00a0 He had a nice TD catch against Marte Mapu in which he did a little stutter-and-go and left Mapu in the dust.\u00a0 Mapu was so faked out that he wasn\u2019t even in the frame of the video anymore.<\/p>\n

Offensive Line Pass Blocking is a Major Concern<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Pass Rush had another great day with 5 would-be sacks of Drake Maye.\u00a0 This from Greg Bedard \u201con all three attempts during one of Maye’s sets (coincidentally, that was when Jared<\/strong>\u00a0Wilson<\/strong> started at center). It was somebody else each time: Milton<\/strong>\u00a0Williams<\/strong>\u00a0beat\u00a0Mike<\/strong>\u00a0Onwenu<\/strong>,\u00a0Keion<\/strong>\u00a0White<\/strong>\u00a0got\u00a0Cole<\/strong>\u00a0Strange<\/strong>, and then\u00a0K’Lavon<\/strong>\u00a0Chaisson<\/strong>\u00a0got around\u00a0Will<\/strong>\u00a0Campbell<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Is the Defense this good, or is the O-line this bad?\u00a0 We won\u2019t know until Monday with the pads on and they start doing one-on-ones.\u00a0 The definitive answer will come in the joint practices.\u00a0 If they are having the same issue in joint practices, then we have a big problem.\u00a0 Defense is always ahead of Offense this early in Training Camp, but signs of improvement need to be shown.\u00a0 Same starting line combination with Wilson subbing at Center with the 1st<\/sup> team and both Guard positions with backups.\u00a0 Marcus Bryant<\/strong> has been the primary backup at Left Tackle<\/p>\n

Defense Put on a Show<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Robert Spillane <\/strong>had two Pass Breakups (PBU).\u00a0 Spillane is not known for his coverage skills. \u00a0Jack Gibbens<\/strong> also added two PBUs against Josh Dobbs<\/strong>, one of which was picked off by Jabrill Peppers<\/strong>.\u00a0 \u00a0DJ James<\/strong> had another strong day.\u00a0 If he keeps stacking days, he is someone that we will have to look at fighting for a roster spot.<\/p>\n

Kicker Competition is Heating Up<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Definitely, Andres Borregales<\/strong> missed an Extra Point badly.\u00a0 Depending upon who is reporting and what angle they were looking at, both kickers had kicks that sailed directly over the uprights.\u00a0 Whether they were good or bad would have been a call on the field.\u00a0 Let’s give them the benefit of the doubt and say that Borregales was 3 for 4 and Romo had another perfect 4 for 4 day.\u00a0\u00a0 At this point, I think John Parker-Romo has the slight edge.\u00a0 How they do on kickoffs may be the determining factor.<\/p>\n

Patriots’ New Uniform to be Revealed<\/strong><\/h3>\n

On the Thursday Night Football game between the Patriots and the New York Jets, both teams will have new uniforms called the NFL Nike Rivalries uniforms.\u00a0 The reveal of the uniform will be on August 28th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n

They will also wear their \u201cPat Patriot\u201d Red throwback uniforms.\u00a0 In Week 3, versus the Pittsburgh Steelers, they will wear the throwback uniforms, and in Week 13 on Monday Night Football, versus the New York Giants.<\/p>\n

Keion White Leads the Defense This Spring<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\u201cLeading with violence is always my type of style,\u201d White said following Friday\u2019s walkthrough. \u201cSo, whenever I can do that and not read as much, that\u2019s definitely beneficial for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to the violent approach, Mike Vrabel and Terrell Williams\u2019 new defensive system will feature a more aggressive and attacking defensive front. That should suit White and his fellow linemen well, as the emphasis is no longer to read-and-react and instead pushing up the field to make plays in the backfield.<\/p>\n

Keion White has expressed a strong stance on the defensive standard for the Patriots, stating that it should be\u00a0“negative yards on every play.”<\/p>\n

Polk and Baker<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Do Ja\u2019Lynn Polk<\/strong> and Javon Baker<\/strong> not want to be here as part of the New England Patriots<\/strong><\/a>?\u00a0 It appears to me that they are doing everything they can to be cut by the team so they can go to another team.\u00a0 Polk knows Vrabel\u2019s stance on \u201cSoft Tissue\u201d injuries.\u00a0 \u00a0Baker was seen dancing after being spoken to by coaches.\u00a0 Even Stephon Diggs spoke with him during practice.\u00a0 Polk was not spotted on the field for a 4th<\/sup> consecutive day.\u00a0 You can\u2019t make the team from the tub.<\/p>\n

A possible trade suggestion made by Heavy.com has Polk being shipped off with a 7th<\/sup> Round pick to Arizona for just a 6th<\/sup> round pick.\u00a0 That\u2019s how far Polk\u2019s value has dropped.<\/p>\n

Players day Off on Sunday<\/strong><\/h3>\n

This is a mandatory Day Off in accordance with the CBA.\u00a0 Monday at 10:15 will be the first padded practice, and the boys will get the chance to pound each other.\u00a0 I think you will see a bigger emphasis on the running game in the upcoming practices. \u00a0I expect the practice time to be extended to 2-hours on Monday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
