{"id":59409,"date":"2025-04-15T13:26:29","date_gmt":"2025-04-15T17:26:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/?p=59409"},"modified":"2025-04-27T11:11:47","modified_gmt":"2025-04-27T15:11:47","slug":"morse-four-potential-2025-patriots-draft-scenarios","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/2025\/04\/15\/morse-four-potential-2025-patriots-draft-scenarios\/","title":{"rendered":"MORSE: Four Potential 2025 Patriots Draft Scenarios"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong>Your Worst Nightmare, the Patriots 2025 Draft! <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Well maybe not that bad, but we have been talking about the draft since it was obvious the Patriots were in for a disastrous season back in November. \u00a0\u00a0The Draft is finally a little over a week away.\u00a0 I am going to look at the four scenarios the Patriots face when picking 4<sup>th<\/sup> in next week\u2019s draft.<\/p>\n<p>Colorado WR\/CB Travis Hunter, the Heisman Trophy winner, and EDGE rusher Abdul Carter of Penn State are the cream of the crop as far as athletes are concerned.\u00a0 QB Cam Ward will be the #1 pick by Tennessee.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Scenario #1<\/strong> \u2013 Travis Hunter drops into the Patriots&#8217; lap at #4.\u00a0 I don\u2019t need 15 minutes to make that decision, I am running the card up before some team makes me a crazy offer.\u00a0 Hunter is the #1 player at two positions.\u00a0 This one is a no-brainer of taking the Best Available Athlete and foregoing the need for an OT until later.\u00a0 The Patriots will be doing their draft prep with other GMs gauging their interest in a trade that would get the Patriots back into the 1<sup>st<\/sup> round to select an Offensive Tackle.\u00a0 The best trading partner might be the Minnesota Vikings, who own the 24<sup>th<\/sup> selection.\u00a0 The Vikings only have 4 draft picks (1st, 3rd, 5th, and 6th).\u00a0 It will take the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> round pick #38 and 3<sup>rd<\/sup> Round pick #77, the selection acquired in the Matt Judon trade.\u00a0 \u00a0It\u2019s a little uneven according to the Jimmy Johnson draft Trade Chart, so the Patriots might have to add a 2026 6th-round pick to balance it off.\u00a0 Minnesota only has one of three tackles, Josh Simmons, Kelvin Banks or Josh Connerly should be available at #24. \u00a0\u00a0Mike Vrabel spent a lot of time talking with Josh Simmons at his Ohio State Pro Day.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Scenario #2<\/strong> \u2013 Hunter dropping to the Patriots is highly unlikely. However, Abdul Carter being available at #4 is a realistic scenario.\u00a0 Some character flaws have been revealed in the last few weeks, according to Bob McGinn, a well-respected national football scribe.\u00a0 \u00a0It\u2019s not saying that Carter is a bad guy, but that he is aloof, eccentric, and doesn\u2019t practice hard.\u00a0 He is not a team leader.\u00a0 \u00a0Add this to the medical concerns brought up in the Combine medical exams, indicating that Carter has a stress reaction in his foot. According to his agent Drew Rosenhaus, Carter\u2018s foot is showing improvement and won&#8217;t need surgery.<\/p>\n<p>Carter was in Indianapolis for a Combine medical recheck on the injury following an initial evaluation at February&#8217;s scouting combine. Jones \/ USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images)<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Scenarios #3<\/strong> \u2013 Neither Carter nor Hunter are available.\u00a0 The Patriots then would like to trade back and pick up some additional draft capital.\u00a0\u00a0 Reports came out this week that New Orleans starting QB Derek Carr may need shoulder surgery, which could knock him out for the year.\u00a0 I said weeks ago in my Mock Draft #3 that the Patriots should take Carter and trade with New Orleans at #9 to select an OT.\u00a0 I was offering Joe Milton, Jahlani Tavai, and a 2026 #1.<\/p>\n<p>I bet the Saints wished they had traded for Joe Milton now!\u00a0 To think we just gave him away! The trade would be New Orleans 1<sup>st<\/sup> round selection (#9) and second-round pick (#40).\u00a0 In my last Mock Draft, both Will Campbell and Armand Membou were taken before pick #9.\u00a0 This is where I shock the world and take Georgia Linebacker \/ EDGE Rusher Jalon Walker.\u00a0 \u00a0In 2024, Walker was selected as the top linebacker in College Football by winning the prestigious Butkus Award.\u00a0 At 6\u20191\u201d, 243-pounds Walker ran a 4.5 40-yard dash at the Combine.\u00a0 He can play inside or out and is a devastating pass rusher despite being undersized.\u00a0 He had 5 sacks in 2023 as a part-time player.\u00a0 Last season, he added 6.5 sacks and 61 total tackles while garnering 3<sup>rd<\/sup> team All-American and 2<sup>nd<\/sup> Team All-SEC honors.\u00a0 In his 3-year career, he only started 11 games, all in 2024.\u00a0 Walker turned 21 in February.\u00a0 This is what NFL Draft Buzz says about Walker:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Developed impressive pattern-matching skills in zone coverage, showing natural feel for route combinations and spacing<\/li>\n<li>Quick first step off the edge translates to devastating pass rush ability, demonstrated by his three-sack performance against Texas in 2024<\/li>\n<li>Shows rare bend and ankle flexion for a linebacker his size, consistently able to flatten around tackles while maintaining speed to the quarterback<\/li>\n<li>Natural block destructor who uses powerful hands and leverage to keep himself clean, particularly effective when working through traffic<\/li>\n<li>Brings scheme versatility with experience both as an edge rusher and off-ball linebacker in Georgia&#8217;s multiple defensive looks<\/li>\n<li>Exceptional closing speed in space, verified by his blazing 4.50 forty time that puts him in the 94th percentile at the position<\/li>\n<li>High-motor player who consistently affects the quarterback, evidenced by his team-leading pressure numbers against Kentucky<\/li>\n<li>Takes on blocks with excellent pad level and leverage, consistently maintaining position to make plays in the run game<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>He is also a team leader. The Junior was elected as a Team Captain in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The Patriots would then trade with the Vikings to bring the Patriots back into the 1<sup>st<\/sup> round to select an Offensive Tackle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Scenario #4<\/strong> \u2013 Your Worst Nightmare!\u00a0 Both Hunter and Carter are gone and the Patriots can\u2019t find a trade partner and have to stick and pick at #4.\u00a0 \u00a0The Patriots might be a little gun shy from getting burned last year and not getting a Left Tackle.\u00a0 If they take Walker they risk the chance of not getting back into the 1<sup>st<\/sup> round and\/ or reaching for a Tackle.\u00a0 They could just stick and pick Will Campbell, the safe pick.\u00a0 No one in Foxboro is concerned about Campbell\u2019s arm length.\u00a0 He has started for two years in the SEC going up against a lot of players that will be drafted.\u00a0 The Video Tape doesn\u2019t lie!\u00a0 The worst case with Campbell is that he is a Pro Bowl Guard that plays for 10 years.\u00a0 They could go for Armand Membou a player with a lower floor but higher ceiling.\u00a0 The knock against Membou is that he hasn\u2019t played Left Tackle.\u00a0 He started at Right Tackle for three seasons.\u00a0 Yes, that is in the SEC just like Campbell.\u00a0 He gave up three sacks in three years and only 1 in the last two seasons.\u00a0 I saw him eat up Donovan Ezeiruaku from Boston College a projected 2<sup>nd<\/sup> round pick this year.\u00a0 No sacks and forced Ezeiruaku to the other side of the field.\u00a0 Membou didn\u2019t switch to Left Tackle because Missouri signed Left Tackle Marcus Bryant from SMU in the transfer portal.\u00a0 Bryant was 1<sup>st<\/sup> Team All-AAC at SMU in 2023.\u00a0 That\u2019s why Membou didn\u2019t switch.\u00a0 Unfortunately, Membou got sick at the Senior Bowl and didn\u2019t get that opportunity to switch and take some snaps at Left Tackle, an exercise the scouts insist on seeing.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>New Orleans QB Derek Carr May Need Surgery\u00a0 <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This is the big news of the week.\u00a0 Carr\u2019s shoulder has not responded to just rest, and he may need season-ending shoulder surgery.\u00a0 This leaves the Saints in desperate need of a QB.\u00a0 Do they trade for Kurt Cousins or do they sign Aaron Rodgers?\u00a0 We know Spencer Rattler is not the answer.\u00a0 New Orleans might jump up and trade for a chance to select Shedeur Sanders.\u00a0 This could possibly benefit the Patriots by creating a market for Sanders and a potential bidding war.\u00a0 The same situation applies to the NY Giants, who don\u2019t really want Carter since they have Chauncey Golston, Brian Burns, and Kayvon Thibodeaux at the LB \/ edge pass rush position.\u00a0 \u00a0If the Giants make that trade, either Hunter or Carter fall into the Patriots&#8217; color: white;\">(PHOTO: Maria Lysaker-Imagn Images.)<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3><strong>Patriots Needs in the Draft <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I am going to prioritize what I believe the Patriots need and how they can draft to make the team better.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Left Tackle<\/strong> \u2013 everyone knows this is their top priority.\u00a0 Do they take the Tackle right away and not have to worry about finding a trade partner to get a quality tackle later in the first round.\u00a0 An interesting point was raised by Jason Licht, the Tampa Bay GM.\u00a0 He stated that he doesn\u2019t think there will be many trades because teams are not willing to give up draft capital to move up.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tight End<\/strong> \u2013 Both Hunter Henry and Austin Hooper will be 31 in-season and entering their 10<sup>th<\/sup> season.\u00a0 We need someone who can catch and block.\u00a0 Eliot Wolf seems to think this is a deep draft for TEs.\u00a0 I don\u2019t.\u00a0 Warren and Loveland will be gone before the Patriots can get a chance to take them.\u00a0 I want Mason Taylor and would take him as high as the top of the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> round.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Edge Rusher<\/strong> \u2013 Harold Landry is getting up there in age.\u00a0 The Patriots were dead last in sacks.\u00a0 I would love to get Abdul Carter, but another possibility is Jalon Walker, LB, Georgia.\u00a0 There are other players later in the draft, too. I have Pass Rush as a higher priority than Running Back because of position scarcity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Running back<\/strong> \u2013 Rhamondre Stevenson, we can\u2019t trust because of his fumbling problem, and I don\u2019t think Antonio Gibson is an every-down back.\u00a0 I want a workhorse back and a second receiving back.\u00a0 This is a very deep back class with as many as 32 RBs with draftable grades. \u00a0The Patriots should wait to take a running back. Look for them to double down and take a second receiving back late in the draft.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wide Receiver<\/strong> \u2013 We still need an X receiver and more speed from our receivers.\u00a0 Outside of Diggs and Hollins, any of last season\u2019s receivers can easily be replaced.\u00a0 \u00a0None of our receivers have the requisite speed under 4.5 in the 40 and under 7.0 3-cone drill time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Defensive Line<\/strong> \u2013 This class is so deep that the Patriots (and other teams) may wait to grab them for value later in the draft.\u00a0 That may give the Patriots an opportunity to draft a better lineman with that extra 3<sup>rd<\/sup> round selection.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Free Safety<\/strong> \u2013 The Patriots have ignored the Free Safety position since Devin McCourty retired.\u00a0 The Patriots added Marcus Epps in Free Agency, but is that enough?\u00a0 I think Kyle Dugger and Marte Mapu should move to LB and neither should be a Safety again.\u00a0 \u00a0Don&#8217;t hinder the progress that Dell Pettus made last season.\u00a0 He filled in admirably for Dugger and Peppers with 341 defensive snaps.\u00a0 His 73.9 rating from Pro Football Focus had him ranked 26th in the league as an UDFA rookie last season.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Overall Assessment of the Draft Class \u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>We have been told by the NFL Draft pundits that his is not a good Draft Class.\u00a0 I disagree.\u00a0 This class lacks star power and only has two or three sure things at the top of the draft.\u00a0 However, this class has a lot of talent particularly at Running Back and Defensive Tackle.\u00a0 This is what is called a Starters Draft.\u00a0 Each team should be able to get three to four starting players out of this draft.<\/p>\n<p>Presently, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/2025-new-england-patriots-draft-picks-full-list\/\"><strong>the Patriots have 4 picks within the first 80 players<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 They should get 4 starting players if Eliot Wolf and the scouting staff do their jobs correctly.\u00a0\u00a0 If Wolf has another disastrous draft like he did last year, he will get fired.\u00a0 He might get fired anyway, so that Mike Vrabel can install his man Ryan Cowden into the GM position.\u00a0 Usually, a team waits until after the draft to make GM firings.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Your Worst Nightmare, the New England Patriots 2025 Draft.
