{"id":58411,"date":"2025-02-20T09:45:26","date_gmt":"2025-02-20T14:45:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/?p=58411"},"modified":"2025-02-20T09:48:15","modified_gmt":"2025-02-20T14:48:15","slug":"morse-patriots-offseason-review-offense","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/2025\/02\/20\/morse-patriots-offseason-review-offense\/","title":{"rendered":"MORSE: Patriots Offseason Review &#8211; Offense"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Offseason Review \u2013 Offense<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The play of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\" title=\"New England Patriots at PatsFans.com\"><strong>New England Patriots<\/strong><\/a> quarterback Drake Maye has given the fans some optimism heading into the 2025 season.\u00a0 A look back at what Maye and the offense accomplished last season can best be described as trying circumstances.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Quarterback<\/strong> &#8211; The Jacoby Brissett experiment as a placeholder for Maye until he was ready was a complete failure.\u00a0 Brissett behind the sieve that was the Offensive Line was a complete disaster.\u00a0 I still don\u2019t know how they won the game versus Cincinnati.\u00a0 To his credit, Jacoby Brissett was a great mentor for Drake Maye, and he is one of the reasons that Maye was so successful as a rookie.\u00a0 Brissett should not be returning in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Maye was thrust into the starting lineup much earlier than anticipated.\u00a0 He started his 1<sup>st<\/sup> game versus Houston at home in Week 6, and their pass rush overwhelmed him. Remember, he had just two years of college ball and missed his Senior year of High School because of COVID.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s compare Mac Jones rookie season with Josh McDaniels calling the plays to Maye\u2019s freshman season under Alex Van Pelt.<\/p>\n<p>Jones\u00a0\u00a0 17GS\u00a0\u00a0 10W \u2013 7L 67.6 Comp % 22 TDs to 13 INT<\/p>\n<p>Maye \u00a0\u00a0 12GS\u00a0\u00a0 3W \u2013 9L 66.6 Comp % 15TDs to 10 INT<\/p>\n<p>Maye had no offensive line in front of him and no running game.\u00a0 He was literally running for his life, as he led the NFL in QB rushing with 421 yards on 54 attempts.\u00a0 However, his running ability was never featured as part of the offense until the last few games of the season.\u00a0 With the innovative McDaniels back in charge of the offense and his ability to coach young players, the future is bright in New England.<\/p>\n<p>Joe Milton was a 6<sup>th<\/sup> round pick and a surprise pick at that.\u00a0 Former GM Scott Pioli predicted before the draft that the Patriots would take two rookie Quarterbacks.\u00a0 They took a shot at the big-armed Milton.<\/p>\n<p>To the credit of Alex Van Pelt, Ben McAdoo, and QB Coach TC McCartney, they did a terrific getting the very raw Milton up to speed.\u00a0 Milton started the final game against the Buffalo Bills, and he put on a show.\u00a0 He went 22 of 29 (75%) for 241 yards, a TD and no interceptions.\u00a0 Granted, he was playing against backups, but these are legitimate NFL players, not some scrubs inserted into the 4th Quarter of a pre-season game.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, Buffalo was trying to lose the game to rob the Patriots of the #1 pick in the draft and succeeded.\u00a0 Going into 2025, Milton will be the #2 QB.\u00a0 They will sign a veteran to serve as a mentor and insurance.<\/p>\n<div class=\"m-0 p-0 pb-0\" style=\"background-color: #313131; text-align: right; border-bottom-left-radius: 5px; border-bottom-right-radius: 5px;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pf_reveal lazy size-full wp-image-54284\" style=\"width: 100%; height: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/USATSI_23525284_168390408_lowres-660x440.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/USATSI_23525284_168390408_lowres-660x440.jpg 660w, https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/USATSI_23525284_168390408_lowres-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/USATSI_23525284_168390408_lowres-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/USATSI_23525284_168390408_lowres-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/USATSI_23525284_168390408_lowres-450x300.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/USATSI_23525284_168390408_lowres-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/USATSI_23525284_168390408_lowres.jpg 1850w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 450px, (max-width: 768px) 660px, (max-width: 1024px) 800px, 1200px\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Chukwuma Okorafor\" width=\"660\" height=\"440\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"m-0 mb-3 p-0 pb-3 pt-0 pr-3 pl-3\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 10px; color: white;\">Okorafor left the team early in 2024 and never returned. (PHOTO: Eric Canha-USA TODAY Sports)<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Offensive Line<\/strong> \u2013 They were truly Offensive.\u00a0 The Patriots started 9 different Offensive Line combinations over the course of the season.\u00a0 Buffalo, on the other hand, has had the same starting group together for 33 of the last 34 games over two seasons.<\/p>\n<p>The problem started in Free Agency as the new regime under Eliot Wolf failed to identify a quality Left Tackle in Free Agency and convince him to play here.\u00a0 Instead, they opted to sign a Right Tackle, Chuks Okorafor, who had lost his starting job in Pittsburgh.\u00a0 They didn\u2019t do their homework on Okorafor because they tried to make him play Left Tackle, which he couldn\u2019t do.\u00a0 It was later discovered that he was having mental health issues and eventually left the team.\u00a0 He was officially released last week.<\/p>\n<p>That left the Draft. After selecting Maye at #3, they opted to trade out of #34 but didn\u2019t take a tackle.\u00a0 Four tackles were taken after pick #37, leaving the Patriots holding their schmenzer in the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> round.\u00a0 Finally, the Patriots panicked and took Caeden Wallace at pick #68 in the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> round. \u00a0Wallace was taken a full round earlier than the Pats wanted to take him because of the run on Tackles in the 1<sup>st<\/sup> two rounds.\u00a0 Wallace was a Right Tackle at Penn State and had never played Left Tackle in his career.\u00a0 Guess what, Wallace can\u2019t play Left Tackle.\u00a0 \u00a0His rookie year was a disaster because of the injuries he sustained.<\/p>\n<p>Cole Strange took a half year to recover from his off-season surgery and ended up at Center.\u00a0 This may be his best position, and given David Andrews&#8217;s age and recent injury history, this may be a permanent change.\u00a0 \u00a0Layden Robinson taken in Round 4 played well at times.<\/p>\n<div class=\"m-0 p-0 pb-0\" style=\"background-color: #313131; text-align: right; border-bottom-left-radius: 5px; border-bottom-right-radius: 5px;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pf_reveal lazy size-full wp-image-55293\" style=\"width: 100%; height: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/USATSI_23836619_168390408_lowres-450x300.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/USATSI_23836619_168390408_lowres-450x300.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/USATSI_23836619_168390408_lowres-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/USATSI_23836619_168390408_lowres-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/USATSI_23836619_168390408_lowres-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/USATSI_23836619_168390408_lowres-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/USATSI_23836619_168390408_lowres-660x440.jpg 660w, https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/USATSI_23836619_168390408_lowres-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 450px, (max-width: 768px) 660px, (max-width: 1024px) 800px, 1200px\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Vederian Lowe\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"m-0 mb-3 p-0 pb-3 pt-0 pr-3 pl-3\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 10px; color: white;\">Patriots offensive tackle Vedarian Lowe. (PHOTO: Eric Canha-USA TODAY Sports)<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Vederian Lowe was acquired in a trade with Minnesota at the end of training camp in 2023 when the Patriots were also in rough shape at the tackle spot, and with the situation even more dire last season, he ended up in a more prominent role.\u00a0 He struggled at Left Tackle, but in comparison to all the rookies that were taken, he played better than all but one left Tackle from the rookie class.\u00a0 The top rookie Left Tackle in the draft, Joe Alt, played Right Tackle, as did Roger Rosengarten, taken just ahead of Wallace.<\/p>\n<p>Ben Brown signed off the Las Vegas Raiders Practice Squad was pressed into service.\u00a0 He was one of the worst centers in the league according to PFF.\u00a0 Jake Andrews was hurt and placed on IR.\u00a0 Sidy Sow was hurt often and when he played, was ineffective.\u00a0 Big Mike Onwenu signed a big contract extension in the off-season and didn\u2019t play up to the amount he was being paid. \u00a0\u00a0Demontrey Jacobs was picked off waivers from Denver who had hoped to pass him through to their Practice Squad.\u00a0 Week 4 he started his 1<sup>st<\/sup> game at Right Tackle.\u00a0 He had his moments but for the most part he was a turnstile.<\/p>\n<p>Lecitus Smith, Tyreese Robinson, and Lester Cotton are jags and nothing but camp fodder.\u00a0 Hopefully new Offensive line coach Doug Marrone will have a positive effect on the line.\u00a0 They also added Jason Houghtaling, retained Robert Kugler and it has been reported that Dante Scarnecchia will be assisting the team in an unofficial capacity.\u00a0 \u00a0However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/2025\/02\/06\/transcript-dante-scarnecchia-interview-on-the-greg-hill-show-weei-2-6\/\"><strong>Scarnecchia has since denied those reports<\/strong><\/a>, which is disappointing given how incredible of a coach he is.<\/p>\n<p>We need at least three new Offensive linemen, and the Patriots should acquire those players through Free Agency.\u00a0 I don\u2019t like the overall draft pool of talent in this draft.\u00a0 Perhaps they will draft and develop an Offensive Tackle in the mid to late rounds.\u00a0 The class isn\u2019t that good, and it\u2019s unfair to ask one of these potential draftees to come in and start right away.<\/p>\n<div class=\"m-0 p-0 pb-0\" style=\"background-color: #313131; text-align: right; border-bottom-left-radius: 5px; border-bottom-right-radius: 5px;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pf_reveal lazy size-full wp-image-55731\" style=\"width: 100%; height: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/USATSI_24244073_168390408_lowres-450x300.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/USATSI_24244073_168390408_lowres-450x300.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/USATSI_24244073_168390408_lowres-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/USATSI_24244073_168390408_lowres-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/USATSI_24244073_168390408_lowres-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/USATSI_24244073_168390408_lowres-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/USATSI_24244073_168390408_lowres-660x440.jpg 660w, https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/USATSI_24244073_168390408_lowres-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 450px, (max-width: 768px) 660px, (max-width: 1024px) 800px, 1200px\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"m-0 mb-3 p-0 pb-3 pt-0 pr-3 pl-3\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 10px; color: white;\">(PHOTO: Rhamondre Stevenson \/ Brian Fluharty-Imagn Images)<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Runningback<\/strong> &#8211; Rhamondre Stevenson had a great game against Cincinnati and was the primary reason they won that game with his Yards after first contact.\u00a0 That quickly disappeared, and Stevenson developed a fumbling problem. There was no accountability for Stevenson fumbling.\u00a0 Those days are over and if Stevenson can\u2019t correct his problem, he will likely be gone. \u00a0Mike Vrabel will not stand for that.<\/p>\n<p>I loved the play of Antonio Gibson and didn\u2019t think he received enough touches.\u00a0 The team also didn\u2019t use him enough in the passing game.\u00a0 \u00a0Ja\u2019Mychal Hasty is a Free Agent and probably won\u2019t be re-signed.\u00a0 Terrell Jennings was an UDFA who made the Practice Squad and was called up late in the season.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tight Ends<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0 Hunter Henry had one of the best seasons of his career.\u00a0 He topped his season high number of receptions (66) and total yards (674).\u00a0 However, he only had 2 TD receptions.\u00a0 \u00a0Austin Hooper is a Free Agent and also had a good year.\u00a0 He chipped in with 45 receptions, 476 yards and 3 TDs.\u00a0 Both Henry and Hooper are entering their 10<sup>th<\/sup> year in the league and are on the other side of 30.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think Hooper will be re-signed.\u00a0 Jaheim Bell was a 7<sup>th<\/sup> round pick.\u00a0 He stands only 6\u20192\u201d and weighs 241 pounds.\u00a0 All three TE\u2019s offer nothing in the trenches as they are all below average blockers.\u00a0 \u00a0Jack Westover was elevated from the Practice squad and the team picked up Giovanni Ricci and signed him to a futures contract.\u00a0 It is believed that Ricci will be a Fullback at 6\u20193\u201d 240-pounds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wide Receiver<\/strong> \u2013 The team finally ended the Tyquan Thornton experiment.\u00a0 Another Bill Belichick the GM failure, as was the signing of Juju Smith-Schuster.\u00a0 Eliot Wolf made the mistake of the ages in trading back from pick #34 and allowing the Chargers to draft Ladd McConkey.\u00a0 In my opinion he deserved to be fired over that mistake.\u00a0 Instead of taking a Tackle, they chose Ja\u2019Lynn Polk, who went on to have one of the worst rookie seasons ever.\u00a0 He followed that up with drafting Javon Baker.\u00a0 He was all talk and no action.\u00a0 Together, they had the worst WR rankings in the entire league.<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick Bourne was nothing special after finally getting healthy enough to play.\u00a0 Kayshon Boutte made a surprising impact when he got on the field.\u00a0 With his disastrous rookie season behind him and his legal troubles in the rearview mirror, he continued to press on and come up big in spots for the team.<\/p>\n<div class=\"m-0 p-0 pb-0\" style=\"background-color: Alex Van Pelt to incorporate him into the Offense.\u00a0 John Jiles signed a futures contract after spending the year on the Practice Squad.\u00a0 The 24-year-old Jiles is 6\u20193\u201d 219-pounds and went undrafted in 2024.\u00a0 He signed on with the NY Giants for training camo.\u00a0 He was cut and the Patriots signed him to their Practice Squad.\u00a0 Jiles played at D II West Florida.<\/p>\n<p>JaQuae Jackson who had been on IR since Training Camp signed an extension this week.\u00a0 During the Pre-Season Jackson had a 38-yard TD strike from Joe Milton against Carolina.\u00a0 Jackson was an Exclusive Rights Free Agent.\u00a0 Obviously, the team must have thought a lot of him to be re-signed.\u00a0 This means the entire Wide Receiver room from the end of the season has been kept intact.\u00a0 The 26-year-old Jackson is a 6\u20191\u201d 184 wideout from Rutgers.\u00a0 Wide Receiver, and in particular a #1 X receiver, is a top priority in Free Agency.\u00a0 There are also possibilities of trades, where the team can fit an established receiver with a big contract under their large salary cap.\u00a0 Will Bob Kraft spend the money?<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Patriots Free Agents (Released)<\/p>\n<p>Austin Hooper<\/p>\n<h3><strong>NFL Draft Combine\u00a0 Feb 27 \u2013 Mar 2<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The annual Underwear Olympics will again be held in Indianapolis.\u00a0 This is the opportunity for the scouts to get accurate measurements on the players (height, weight, speed) as well as conducting Medical Physicals.\u00a0 A few years back Marcus Cannon was an elite Offensive lineman projected to be drafted in the 1<sup>st<\/sup> two rounds.\u00a0 At the combine, the Doctors found out he had cancer, which was unknown to Cannon.\u00a0 The Patriots drafted him in the 4<sup>th<\/sup> round and moved his treatment to Boston.\u00a0 He went on to have a fine career in the league.<\/p>\n<p>New Offensive Line coach Doug Marrone requires his Offensive Tackles to have long arms.\u00a0 That means if the Tackle\u2019s arms are not 34\u201d long, the Patriots are not considering them a tackle.\u00a0 Grey Zabel\u2019s arm length is 32 <sup>\u00be<\/sup>\u201d (Official Measurement from Senior Bowl), therefore he will be a Guard\/Center in the NFL.\u00a0 I will be interested in seeing what LSU Offensive Tackle Will Campbell\u2019s arm length is.\u00a0 It has been rumored that he has short arms (just short of 34&#8243;), and will be forced to move to Guard, not Tackle in the NFL.<\/p>\n<p>Next week I will highlight a few players I am curious to learn more about
