It is hard to believe that the Patriots training camp started over a month ago. Since then, players have come and gone as injuries and missed time have jockeyed the positioning of players on the 53 man roster.<\/p>\n

The time has flown by; now the team has two preseason games under their belt and just two more remain before the games count for real. Changes keep occurring at the bottom end of the roster, not surprisingly as the inevitable injuries occur and some players\u2019 performances rise and fall.<\/p>\n

Bill Belichick will have some intriguing decisions to make on September 1 when the cutdown to 75 players rolls around\u2026even more so once the final 53 man roster must be selected just a few days after that.<\/p>\n

Just a reminder, the final 53 man roster we see at the end of preseason, will undoubtedly differ from the roster we\u2019ll see at the end of the regular season. These things always tend to change during the season.<\/p>\n

Here is our 53-Man Roster Projection 4.0<\/p>\n

First up the Offense\u2026<\/p>\n

Offense (24)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Quarterback (2)\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013<\/strong>*Tom Brady<\/strong>* (suspended Weeks 1-4), Jimmy Garoppolo, Ryan Lindley<\/strong><\/p>\n

Brady\u2019s court case drags on and so his status remains as suspended for the time being. I still believe that he will be in uniform for the opener against the Steelers. If the suspension does hold, it will open the door for Lindley (who didn\u2019t play vs NO), to back Jimmy Garoppolo until he does return.<\/p>\n

Garoppolo had a very strong outing against the Saints and seems to have taken a big step forward, a great sign if he has to start in lieu of Brady.<\/p>\n

Running Backs<\/strong>\u00a0(5) \u2013<\/strong> *LaGarrette Blount* (suspended Week 1)<\/strong>, Brandon Bolden<\/strong>, James Develin, Jonas Gray<\/strong>,\u00a0James White, Dion Lewis<\/strong><\/p>\n

Blount is suspended for Week 1, but was able to come back and not only practice but play against New Orleans. He and Jonas Gray will share \u201cbig back\u201d duties with core ST standout Bolden waiting in the wings in case of emergency.<\/p>\n

The third down back competition which two weeks ago seemed liked Cadet\u2019s to lose has seen a flip-flop as he\u2019s been out with an injury and James White and Dion Lewis have emerged. Lewis looked particularly impressive against the Saints, displaying a nice burst in both the running and passing games, although for now, White still has the upper hand but Lewis looked impressive. Now Cadet finds himself out and needs to get back on the field\u2026and quickly.<\/p>\n

Out: <\/strong>Travaris Cadet, Eric Kettani, Tony Creecy<\/p>\n

Tight End<\/strong>\u00a0(3)<\/strong> \u2013 Rob Gronkowski<\/strong>, Scott Chandler, Michael Hoomanawanui<\/strong><\/p>\n

The team still hasn\u2019t seen either Gronkowski or Chandler in a preseason game and the offense has certainly suffered for it. Gronk has had an outstanding summer and his absence in the preseason games has just been a precautionary decision.<\/p>\n

Hooman holds on to the # 3 position\u2026for now. He dropped an easy drag route catch on the third play from scrimmage against NO that Gronkowski usually makes with ease. His blocking at first glance without looking back at the tape seemed subpar as well. Cleveland may get some extended reps next week, something to watch.<\/p>\n

Out: Jake Bequette, Jimmay Mundine, Logan Stokes, Asante Cleveland<\/p>\n

Wide Receiver (5) <\/strong>\u2013 Julian Edelman<\/strong>, Brandon LaFell<\/strong>, Danny Amendola<\/strong>, Aaron Dobson, Chris Harper<\/strong><\/p>\n

The top three, Edelman, LaFell and Amendola, are roster locks. LaFell is still on PUP and may begin the season there. If so that will open up the door for someone else, at least initially. There is still plenty of room for players to rise and fall. Tyms it seems has a serious foot injury and may end up on IR.<\/p>\n

Gibson who has had an outstanding summer, was hurt late in the New Orleans game. His injury may force him out for an extended time. Harper hasn\u2019t hurt his chances at all with two solid games receiving and a key punt return that set up the Patriots for the winning score on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Which brings us to the enigmas that are Dobson and Boyce, the 2013 draft picks aren\u2019t short on potential, but they either don\u2019t produce nor are able to stay on the field. Krause may not have the talent of either, but his production during the preseason games is more than both\u2026combined. This isn\u2019t over by a long shot.<\/p>\n

Out: Brian Tyms, Jonathan Krause, Josh Boyce, Zach D\u2019Orazio, Brandon Gibson<\/p>\n

Offensive Line (9)<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Nate Solder<\/strong>, Sebastian Vollmer<\/strong>,\u00a0Cameron Fleming<\/strong>, Marcus Cannon<\/strong>, Ryan Wendell, Bryan Stork, Tre Jackson, Shaq Mason, David Andrews<\/strong><\/p>\n

No big change here other than Andrews has earned a spot on the roster with some good play filling in for Stork at center and has the versatility to play guard. The offensive line play against New Orleans top defensive unit left much to be desired. Wendell is still on PUP and if he starts the season there, may open up a spot elsewhere on the roster.<\/p>\n

Out: Josh Kline, Caylin Hauptman, Chris Barker, Mark Asper, Ryan Groy<\/p>\n

Next up the Defense\u2026<\/p>\n

Defense (25)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Defensive Line (9)<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Chandler Jones<\/strong>, Rob Ninkovich<\/strong>, Dominique Easley, Sealver Siliga, Malcom Brown, Jabaal Sheard, Alan Branch, Trey Flowers, Geneo Grissom<\/strong><\/p>\n

Brown and Easley have been coming on and playing strong lately. The top three defensive ends Jones, Ninkovich and Sheard are locks. Grissom and Flowers have been very good this summer and will make the team and get their feet wet during the season. Flowers is out right now with a concussion.<\/p>\n

Antonio Johnson and Rufus Johnson have been good this summer but are hurt, this opens the door for Branch, healthy now and playing more. The next two preseason games may see more movement at the position.<\/p>\n

Out: Zach Moore, Chris Jones, Joe Vellano, Antonio Johnson, A.J. Pataiali\u2019l, Rufus Johnson, Casey Walker<\/p>\n

Linebacker (6) –<\/strong>\u00a0Jerod Mayo<\/strong>, Jamie Collins,<\/strong> Dont\u2019a Hightower, James Morris, Jonathan Freeny, Eric Martin<\/strong><\/p>\n

The top three, Mayo, Collins and Hightower are locks. Mayo and Hightower now seem healthy and are being held out for precautionary reasons. Freeny has had a good summer and is strong against the run as well as on STs. Morris is a smart, instinctive ILB who makes plays.<\/p>\n

Martin was having a very good summer before going down with an injury. Depending upon if he can get back or Fletcher comes off of PUP will go a long way in determining that final slot.<\/p>\n

Out: Dekoda Watson, Xzavier Dickson, Darius Fleming, Dane Fletcher, Cameron Gordon<\/p>\n

Cornerback<\/strong>\u00a0(5)<\/strong> \u2013 Tarel Brown, Logan Ryan<\/strong>, Malcolm Butler, Robert McClain, Darryl Roberts<\/strong><\/p>\n

Butler is locked into the left cornerback position; who plays the right is a big question right now. Brown seems to be the logical choice; he\u2019s been the most consistent of the other corners thus far. But the team has been trying to limit his snaps in preseason as he recovers from a 2014 foot injury. Ryan hasn\u2019t had a good summer and his play in the preseason games has been very up and down.He and Fletcher have fallen down the depth chart.<\/p>\n

Roberts is an intriguing rookie who got the start against the Packers and played well before being hurt. His injury status will bear watching during the next two weeks.<\/p>\n

Out: Bradley Fletcher, Daxton Swanson, Jimmy Jean<\/p>\n

Safety (5)<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Devin McCourty<\/strong>, Duron Harmon<\/strong>, Patrick Chung<\/strong>, Jordan Richards<\/strong>, Tavon Wilson<\/strong><\/p>\n

No changes here. McCourty, Chung, Harmon and Richards are all locks here. DMac was playing some corner in the past week and he may at times do the same during the season, much like 2014 but he\u2019ll remain at safety.<\/p>\n

So the final slot will come down to Ebner, Wilson and King. Wilson has been more impressive than Ebner so he gets the nod unless they decide to keep six and cut a player from somewhere else.<\/p>\n

King is a good candidate for the practice squad and has been getting a lot of special teams work in, especially one on one with coach Joe Judge.<\/p>\n

Out: Nate Ebner, Brandon King<\/p>\n

Next Special Teams\u2026<\/p>\n

Specialists (4) <\/strong>\u2013\u00a0Stephen Gostkowski<\/strong>, Ryan Allen<\/strong>, Joe Cardona,<\/strong> Matthew Slater<\/strong><\/p>\n

No changes here\u2026none of the kickers or LS Cardona faces a camp battle. \u00a0All are solid performers. Slater is a team captain and a Pro Bowl special teams\u2019 ace. They are all locks<\/p>\n

Total Roster (53)<\/strong><\/p>\n
