The thought by some that his size coming into camp had him more suited for guard and perhaps he didn’t expect to be playing on the outside.

As a result, the Patriots have spent the first three games trying to piece things together around a group that’s still a work in progress, and it’s made life difficult at quarterback.

They allowed an astounding 15 QB hits last Thursday night, which coupled with the 8 they allowed against Seattle and the 7 they allowed against the Bengals, brings their total to 30 from that standpoint. They’ve also allowed 11 sacks, with Brissett taking 9 of those, while Maye sustained two in his brief appearance the other night.

The lack of a commitment to the run Thursday night didn’t help, with the Patriots also struggling a bit when it came to being as physical up front as they had been through the first two games. Van Pelt admitted afterwards that they should have been more run-centric early on than they were, which ultimately became a lost cause after the score started to get away from them.

But the question remains whether or not he’s putting the offense in a position to succeed, and to this point – at least so far – it doesn’t feel like he’s been able to figure out a way to hide their deficiencies through three games.

2) Mayo preaches accountability: Earlier in the week, one of the more interesting notes was Jerod Mayo putting some of the loss on the shoulders of his players, with Mayo pointing out that guys need to look in the mirror in terms of their own performances.

Without singling people out, Mayo let them know that there needs to be some accountability if they hope to improve.

“It’s a very upfront conversation,” said Mayo. “I have the relationship, and so do the coaches with those guys, where you can be very transparent and open. This isn’t good enough.”

“I showed on one of my slides this morning just a picture of a mirror. Our job as coaches is to put the mirror in front of the players’ faces, and remind them what it really is. It’s not about your mom, your brother, or cousins telling you it’s not your fault. It’s all of our fault. Once again, it starts with me.”

Mayo also went on to say that the protections up front were a topic of discussion, pointing out that if they don’t get it done, it doesn’t leave much chance for success.

“The protections that we run, a lot of teams run the same protection,” said Mayo. “What I showed them this morning, any time you have a free runner through the A or the B gap, it gives the quarterback no chance. We have to be inside-out in all of our protections. If the quarterback can see an edge defender being the free player, then he can make everyone else right, but that hasn’t been the case here.”

<div class="m-0 p-0 pb-0" style="background-color: #313131; Mazz on Tuesday on 98.5 The Sports Hub and he believes there are some questions about whether or not Van Pelt’s system is a good fit right now given where things are personnel-wise. That includes Drake Maye, who Bedard feels doesn’t fit the mold of Van Pelt’s vision on offense.

“There is not the marriage between play-caller, scheme, and the quarterback, and that’s the thing I’m most worried about,” said Bedard. “As much as I don’t think Drake Maye is ready to play a lot in the NFL, I don’t think Alex Van Pelt is ready for Drake Maye. I don’t think Drake Maye is a good fit for his system.”

Michael Felger asked Bedard if he really feels like Maye isn’t a good fit for his system, and Bedard didn’t back down on his opinion.

“Not if he’s going to be like what we’ve seen through three games which is west coast, wide zone, play-action. I don’t think that plays to his strength,” said Bedard. “Also, the west coast offense is so predicated on precise footwork from the quarterback, the receiver, the timing, all that stuff, that’s not Drake Maye. Drake Maye’s more of a riff, ‘I’m going to play like…’ a lot like Josh Allen when he came into the league.”

“What we’ve seen so far from Alex Van Pelt, including and especially the other night, right now, I don’t have much confidence that given Drake Maye, he’s going to be put him in the best position to succeed as far as scheme, blocking things up, how are we going to play? I don’t think he’s going to do any of that stuff because he hasn’t done it for Jacoby Brissett, and he’s almost gotten him killed. What’s he going to do when he gets his hands on Drake Maye?”

“If you put Drake Maye with Kevin O’Connell, Sean McVay, Kyle Shanahan, Clint Kubiak in New Orleans, those guys I can see,” against a good football team, this might be the week.

Quarterback Brock Purdy is banged up and he’s been off to a rough start, which explains some of their issues so far this season.

On the defensive side, the 49ers also lost defensive tackle Javon Hargrave to a partially torn right triceps last Sunday, which is expected to end his season. Christian McCaffrey is also dealing with soreness in his Achilles, which has left the 49ers depleted without one of their more effective offensive weapons. George Kittle has also been dealing with a hamstring injury, with his status also in question for this weekend. Deebo Samuel has also been battling a calf injury.

The bigger issue is going to be how New England’s offensive line can keep Nick Bosa away from Jacoby Brissett, which is going to present a significant challenge.

Still this could be a game where the 49ers look past New England, with the hope that they can do what the Jets did last Thursday and put up a big performance against a team dealing with so many issues.

Whether or not the Patriots can keep this one under control long enough to eke out a victory is now the big question, and it would shift the narrative significantly if they can get out of there at 2-2, as 1-3 would see them in a tough spot with Miami coming into Foxboro as their next opponent on October 6th.

One of the big topic of discussions coming off of last Thursday night’s loss has been the performance of Alex
