Henry came in free and blasted him off the edge, wrapping up Brissett and driving him into the ground for a sack. Looking back at the replay, Chukwuma Okorafor, who got the start at right tackle, blocked in on the play, with Sidy Sow seemingly set to pull across.

However, Sow couldn’t get there after Layden Robinson, who lined up at right guard, got blown back. As a result, he was in Sow’s way, which allowed Henry a free lane to get to the quarterback. Running back Ja’Mycal Hasty, who Brissett had faked a handoff to on the play, also missed him, with neither player doing Brissett any favors.

As a result, Henry was already there as Brissett reached the back of his drop, with the defensive end wrapping him up, taking Brissett completely off his feet, and driving the quarterback’s left shoulder into the ground.

It was a vicious shot, as both Henry and defensive tackle Taylor Stallworth – who arrived just after – landed right on top of him.

(PHOTO: Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports)

Brissett was slow to get up and had to be helped up by his teammates. The veteran was in obvious pain following the hit, wincing as he gingerly went back to the huddle. Two plays later, the drive was over, and that proved to be the end of Brissett’s night, as he didn’t come back out for the next series.

Mayo said after the game that Brissett being out there for just one possession was the plan, and that his injury didn’t factor into that.

“No, that was the plan,” said Mayo. “We were going to play Jacoby a series or two and get Drake in.”

When asked if Brissett would have been able to come back out, Mayo replied, “He would have been able to continue.”

As for his status, Mayo also added, “I talked to him. We’ll see tomorrow. You always feel a little bit more sore the next day, but he said he was good. We’ll find out tomorrow.”

Overall, Brissett did play fairly well. He made a nice throw facing a blitz up the middle on the previous third down on that series, finding Antonio Gibson on a screen that went for 13-yards on a 3rd-and-5. That completion moved the chains and got them out to their own 41.

He also made a nice throw on a 3rd-and-11 on the next sequence, with the offensive line buying Brissett enough time to survey the field and fire a pass deep up the left sideline that K.J. Osborn should have come down with, but the receiver just couldn’t haul it in.

Following a rough outing the previous week, it was a much better performance for Brissett, who is expected to start the season for the club. Unfortunately, his injury will now be the story heading into the opener, as will the guys lining up in front of him.

<div class="m-0 p-0 pb-0" style="background-color: #313131; He’s a good player,” said Maye after the game of Ridgeway. “So I got to get out of there faster. Nick’s doing a heck of a job of fighting in there, so I could get away from center.”

3) Sow also had a rough night having stepped on Maye’s foot to open the second series, causing the QB to lose his shoe.

But the second-year offensive lineman, who had been having a solid preseason up until Sunday night, suffered an ankle injury with just over one minute to go in the half.

On the play, Sow was matched up against defensive tackle Norell Pollard, with Pollard driving Sow back as Maye dropped back to pass. As the two battled it out, Sow ended up rolling his right ankle after managing to spin Pollard away from Maye, which allowed the rookie to take a deep shot down the field to Javon Baker that ended up with a pass Maye put a little too much on.

After the play, Sow was down on the turf holding his ankle and had to be taken to the medical tent. He was initially listed as questionable before eventually being downgraded to “out” and reports after the game said that Sow was spotted in a walking boot as the team left the stadium.

His loss is significant as he had arguably been one of their better offensive linemen this preseason after establishing himself at left guard. He was replaced by Michael Jordan, who was called for a questionable holding penalty later in the drive, with Jordan also avoiding a flag on the ensuing play, which looked more like a holding call than the one he was actually flagged for.

But Sow’s absence creates a new problem the team is going to have to try and work around, which is certainly an issue for an offensive line that didn’t fare well Sunday night.

4) One of the most frustrating parts of this one was the amount of penalties, particularly as it pertained to Chukwuma Okorafor.

Okorafor, who got the start at left tackle, was flagged three times Sunday night for illegal formation, with two of those three being declined. But the one that stood nullified what would have arguably been considered Maye’s best play of the night.

That play happened with time winding down in the first half as Maye faced pressure and moved to his left, rolling out wide and firing the football downfield to K.J. Osborn, who was all by himself at the 11-yard line.

Osborn caught the ball and slipped past safety Derrick Forrest and into the end zone for what appeared to be a 48-yard touchdown, which was an unbelievable job by Maye considering he held up just in front of the line of scrimmage and got the pass off, firing a perfect strike on the play.

Instead, it was called back after Okorafor was flagged for the third time and this one stood.

(PHOTO: Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports)

“I was trying to work backside and ended up getting outside of the pocket. I think it would have been close if I passed the line,” said Maye after the game of that play. “It was definitely real close. I’m not sure what the TV copy looked like. But KJ just making a play and it’s a bummer it got called back, but just the same thing, just hurting ourselves and in a two-minute drive. Can’t do that.”

Mayo was also frustrated after the game. Reporters on hand at the stadium caught offensive line coach Scott Peters meeting with the group at one point, which came not long after Michael Onwenu had also been flagged for the same issue earlier in the half. But the fact it remained a problem after they were already told to be aware of their alignment is what made Mayo so irate.

“I think it is a concern,” said Mayo of the offensive line. “I think that the biggest concern for me, it’s not the x’s and o’s of what to do. It’s just the lack of discipline that they showed today. And that’s on all of us.”

The repeated errors are what had Mayo fuming, and the fact it was discussed and continued to happen is something he said was the most frustrating.

“It’s very frustrating. And once again, you know, it starts with me,” said Mayo. “I just got to get on those guys more in practice about some of that stuff. I think the most frustrating part was after you’ve been told that you have to move up, that they continue to line up the same way. I would say some of those calls, I mean, I don’t know, but, you know, you look at the pictures, and we were definitely deep.”

<img decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-55495" style="width: 100%; height: auto;" src="https://www.patsfans.com/patriots/blog/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/USATSI_24079176_168390408_lowres-450x300.jpg" srcset="https://www.patsfans.com/patriots/blog/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/USATSI_24079176_168390408_lowres-450x300.jpg 450w, https://www.patsfans.com/patriots/blog/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/USATSI_24079176_168390408_lowres-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.patsfans.com/patriots/blog/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/USATSI_24079176_168390408_lowres-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.patsfans.com/patriots/blog/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/USATSI_24079176_168390408_lowres-1536x1025.jpg 1536w, https://www.patsfans.com/patriots/blog/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/USATSI_24079176_168390408_lowres-2048x1366.jpg 2048w, https://www.patsfans.com/patriots/blog/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/USATSI_24079176_168390408_lowres-660x440.jpg 660w, https://www.patsfans.com/patriots/blog/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/USATSI_24079176_168390408_lowres-150x100.jpg 150w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 480px) 450px, (max-width: 768px) 660px, (max-width: 1024px) 800px, 1200px" loading="lazy" alt="K.J. Henry right in his chest as he let that pass go, but he’s so strong that he still managed to get the ball there, allowing Landers to make that play.

Give Zappe credit. He’s been a gamer since he got here, but he’s clearly not as physically gifted as the players ahead of him.
