Throughout the transition from former Patriots coach Bill Belichick to new head coach Jerod Mayo, Robert Kraft had made one thing clear.<\/p>\n

Ownership was not going to be involved in final football decisions, as \u201cyou can\u2019t hold them responsible and have them accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n

To this point, it had seemed like Eliot Wolf had been the one primarily running things leading up to Thurday night\u2019s start to the NFL Draft.\u00a0 However, TheAthletic\u2019s Dianna Russini reported on Monday that while the club is \u201clistening and taking calls from teams\u201d who are looking to make a deal at #3, Jonathan Kraft\u00a0has been \u201cheavily involved in the decision-making.\u201d<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

What that exactly means is tough to say.\u00a0 By \u2018heavily involved,\u2019 that could very well mean that Wolf has kept him informed of who has called and what offers have been made, in terms of any potential trades, as well as where their intentions currently stand.<\/p>\n

At the same time, it could also mean that Kraft is potentially overruling some of those same decisions.\u00a0 That would go against what his father suggested several months ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will be the same input we\u2019ve had for the last three decades,\u201d\u00a0said Robert Kraft back in January<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 \u201cWe try to hire the best people we can find and let them do their job and hold them accountable.\u00a0 If you get involved, and tell them what to do or try to influence [them], then you can\u2019t hold them responsible and have them accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo it\u2019ll be within the people\u2019s discretion who are the decision makers to do it. And if we\u2019ve hired the wrong people, then we\u2019ll have to make a change. But we\u2019re going to try to enjoy it as fans.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wolf suggested\u00a0in a previous press conference ahead of the Scouting Combine<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0that, \u201cI think they have opinions, which they\u2019ll share,\u201d he said, referring to ownership, \u201cBut ultimately it\u2019s down to Jerod and I.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Wolf, the club is \u201copen for business\u201d as it pertains to the #3 overall pick, although reports have suggested that ownership would prefer to see them take a quarterback.<\/p>\n

How much they’ve voiced that preference is obviously the big question.\u00a0 However, with that in mind, Scott Zolak said on Monday on\u00a0Zolak & Bertrand<\/em> on 98.5 The Sports Hub<\/strong><\/a> that he’s been told Jonathan Kraft is not involved, not at any level, at least as far as personnel decisions are concerned.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was told he is not involved,\u201d said Zolak.\u00a0 \u201cJonathan Kraft is not involved in football.\u00a0 Football decisions are made by the football people.\u00a0 Eliot Wolf, Matt Groh, Jerod Mayo, and the football staff.\u00a0 Where I thought they would get involved was that, \u2018OK, hey, this team is calling Mr. Kraft \u2013 or Jonathan Kraft \u2013 and they want our pick at #3.\u2019\u00a0 This is where I thought, they\u2019re not going to get involved in telling you which quarterback to take or who we\u2019re trading back to get.\u00a0 It would make sense to me, if it\u2019s my organization and my team, and there\u2019s this other team \u2013 an organization I know that I\u2019m friends with \u2013 they\u2019re offering up all this stuff, I would like to be involved in that.\u00a0 And I thought that\u2019s where this report came from Russini where Jonathan is involved here.\u00a0 If there\u2019s a big trade in the bag, we have to get it approved.\u00a0 We have to get it signed.\u00a0 We do.\u00a0 We have bosses.\u00a0 That would be normal operating procedure to me.”<\/p>\n

“I was told that is not the case.\u00a0 This is all Eliot.\u00a0 This is all Jerod, and this is all football people.\u00a0 Jonathan is not running the football part of it.\u00a0 Business, yes.\u00a0 Football, no.\u00a0 Believe what you want.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hopefully, that’s indeed the case.<\/p>\n

One other troubling factor is that while Kraft said recently, \u201cI think Eliot [Wolf] has good training, good pedigree, and we actually have a good group of young people,\u201d the plan still seems to be to interview potential GM options after the draft.<\/p>\n

The fact the club hasn\u2019t committed to Wolf and Highsmith, and if they were to experience any interference from ownership, it could affect their futures.\u00a0 If they come away with a solid haul this weekend and if ownership isn’t careful, the idea that the duo could move on if another team pursues them following this draft should be a concern.<\/p>\n

Wolf\u00a0was asked last week<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0about the potential that he\u2019s \u201con a trial\u201d with the team, but he dismissed it and said, \u201cI haven\u2019t thought about it that way,\u201d adding, \u201cI\u2019ve just kind of put my head down and tried to do things that I feel like are the best for the Patriots.\u201d<\/p>\n

One notable part of this is looking back at each of Wolf’s press conferences, he’s referenced “the Patriots” and not really “us” or “we.”\u00a0 Read into that what you want, but it feels a little strange and unsettling.<\/p>\n

Considering how things have gone in the past, seeing him move on would be both disappointing yet not necessarily surprising.\u00a0 Both Wolf and Highsmith have been solid everywhere they\u2019ve been, and not being firmly behind them could mean losing them to someone else.\u00a0 That would certainly hamper a team that absolutely needs smart minds in its front office.<\/p>\n

For now, we\u2019ll see what it all means tomorrow night when the Patriots either make a deal, or find themselves finally on the clock.<\/p>\n
