{"id":51491,"date":"2024-03-04T10:57:19","date_gmt":"2024-03-04T15:57:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/?p=51491"},"modified":"2024-03-04T10:57:19","modified_gmt":"2024-03-04T15:57:19","slug":"morse-thoughts-on-the-2024-nfl-draft-combine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/2024\/03\/04\/morse-thoughts-on-the-2024-nfl-draft-combine\/","title":{"rendered":"MORSE: Thoughts on the 2024 NFL Draft Combine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m back after a much-needed two-week respite in Southwest Florida.<\/p>\n<p>The Underwear Olympics has been completed! \u00a0\u00a0The Patriots had a slew of representative at the combine including Head Coack Jerod Mayo and Director of College Scouting (defacto GM) Eliot Wolf.\u00a0 Both spoke to the media last week, an obvious departure from Bill Belichick, and gave some insight into the new draft process.<\/p>\n<p>Wolf is just beginning to tinker with the way the team will be drafting and scouting, getting away from the Belichick scheme of role specific drafting.\u00a0 Wolf will rely heavily on the Green Bay method his father utilized and draft the Best Available athlete rather than specific needs.\u00a0 As of right now they have many glaring weaknesses and Free Agency may address some of them.\u00a0 The remaining will need to be addressed in the draft.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t believe they can afford to use the Best Athlete Available method and must address those weaknesses in the draft.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tua II heads list of top combine snubs \u2026<\/strong> Every year one of the big questions surrounding the scouting combine is who didn\u2019t get invited. Interesting this year, though, that it doesn\u2019t appear if there are any real huge surprises in the players not invited to the combine.<\/p>\n<p>Among those who won\u2019t be in Indianapolis at the end of the month include QBs Taulia Tagovailoa of Maryland, the younger brother of star Miami QB Tua Tagovailoa, Jack Plummer of Louisville and Carter Bradley of South Alabama; RBs Carson Steele of UCLA, Rasheen Ali Marshall and Memphis\u2019 Blake Watson: WRs KeAndre Lamber-Smith of Penn State and Mississippi\u2019s Zakariah Franklin; Wisconsin OT Mchael Furtney; Clemson C Will Putnam; Wahington DT Tuli Letuliagasnea;\u00a0 LBs Jackson Sirmon of California; Oregon State\u2019s Omar Speights and Mason Cobb of USC; CBs Beanie Bishop of West Virginia and Qwan\u2019Tez Stiggers of Toronto of the CFL; and safeties Akeem Dent of Florida State, Kenny Logan of Kansas and Trey Taylor of the Air Force.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wide Receivers and Offensive Linemen Shine<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>They will dominate the top 50 players taken and that doesn\u2019t bode well for the Patriots.\u00a0 The Patriots were hoping they could snag an impact WR and OL in the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> and 4<sup>th<\/sup> rounds and draft the Best Available in rounds 1 and 2.\u00a0 They need to select two of both.\u00a0 The only way they can accomplish this is by trading the #3 pick for multiple picks in the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> and 3<sup>rd<\/sup> round.<\/p>\n<p>Nine Wide Receivers ran under 4.4 second 40-yard dash.\u00a0 Xavier Worthy broke the record with a 4.21 40-yard dash.\u00a0 That will push him into the 1<sup>st<\/sup> round, along with Marvin Harrison, Roman Odunze, Brian Thomas, Tony Franklin and Ladd McConkey. \u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s 6 WRs taken which hasn\u2019t happened in over 10 years.\u00a0 Only once has there been 7 WRs taken.\u00a0 I am predicting that 8 O-linemen will be taken in the 1<sup>st<\/sup> round and 4 QBs. \u00a0The Patriots interviewed 6 of the top 7 QBs at the Combine.\u00a0 The exception was Washington QB Michael Penix Jr.\u00a0 I am assuming they passed on Penix because of his medical history.\u00a0 He has had two ACL surgeries on the same knee and shoulder surgery as well.<\/p>\n<p>Mark Daniels of MassLive has reported the Patriots are leaning towards drafting Heisman Trophy winning QB Jayden Daniels.\u00a0 This report is speculation and unconfirmed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Path to the Draft Goes Through Indy! <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here are some interesting stats about players drafted from the combine.\u00a0 There are over 321 players that were invited including 18 from National Champion Michigan Wolverines.\u00a0 A total of 35 players drafted last year, did not receive invites.<\/p>\n<p>This the breakdown of players drafted versus participants from last year combine, by position:<\/p>\n<p>QB 13 of 15\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 87%<\/p>\n<p>TE\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 20%<\/p>\n<p>DL\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 75%<\/p>\n<p>DB\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 67%<\/p>\n<p>OL\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 65%<\/p>\n<p>LB\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 63%<\/p>\n<p>WR\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 62%<\/p>\n<p>RB 13 of 27\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 &lt;50%<\/p>\n<p>The first non-combine draftee selected in the 2023 NFL Draft was S Marte Mapu, by the Patriots in the 3rd Round.\u00a0 This was another case of the Patriots and specifically Bill Belichick taking a player because of scheme fit much higher than he should have been picked.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Winners and Losers from the Combine <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Winners<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Xavier Worthy &#8211; WR Texas<\/strong> \u2013 run a 4.21 40-yard dash and you get noticed.\u00a0 This just might push him into the 1<sup>st<\/sup> round.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ladd McConkey WR Georgia<\/strong> \u2013 He backed up and outstanding Senior Bowl with a blazing 4.39 40-yard dash.\u00a0\u00a0 I can see him going to the Chiefs with the last pick in the 1<sup>st<\/sup> round.\u00a0 I can\u2019t believe they will get a player this good with the last pick.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Roman Wilson WR Michigan &#8211; <\/strong>As with McConkey, Wilson followed up the Senior Bowl with a 4.39 40 and a sharp one-handed catch on the sideline during drills.\u00a0 This is the player I want in the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> round.\u00a0 He will go no later than mid second round now.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Issac Guerrendo RB Louisville<\/strong> \u2013 Ran a very fast 4.33 at 6\u2019 221 lbs. His 10\u20199\u201d Broad Jump and 41.5 Vertical Jump were also tops for runningbacks.\u00a0 Toss in a top four 3-cone drill at 6.84 also.\u00a0 Note: only 6 RB performed the 3-cone drill.\u00a0 Guerrendo is an enigma, his only year of production was as a 5<sup>th<\/sup> year senior.\u00a0 He ran for 800 yards rushing and a 6.1 YPC.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jaylen Wright RB Tennessee<\/strong> \u2013 Ran a very good 4.38 40.\u00a0 Wright had 700+ yards as a sophomore and followed that up with 1010 yards last year.\u00a0 His 40 will elevate him.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Roger Rosengarten T Washington<\/strong> \u2013 He was the fastest Offensive Lineman and he will make some money from jumping from a 7<sup>th<\/sup> round afterthought.\u00a0 His 4.92 40 was so fast that he never tried to improve on that. \u00a0He is a Right Tackle and I had him going to the Patriots before the combine.<\/p>\n<p>Four O-linemen pulled hamstrings and that may have hurt them by eliminating their ability to perform field drills.\u00a0 One was the number 2 OT prospect <strong>Olumuyiwa Fashanu T Penn State <\/strong>and fellow potential 1<sup>st<\/sup> round pick <strong>Amarius Mims T Texas<\/strong>.\u00a0 He did run 5.07 on his 1<sup>st<\/sup> attempt, which should be good enough to keep him as a top 10 selection.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Keon Coleman WR Florida<\/strong> &#8211; \u00a0\u00a0The big (6\u20193 \u00bc \u201c 213lb) receiver ran a 4.61 40, however he was recorded as the fastest performing the Guantlet Drill at 20.36 MPH.\u00a0 Last Year rookie sensation Puka Nacua ran the best time in the Guantlet in 20.06 MPH.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dallin Holker TE Colorado State<\/strong> &#8211; \u00a0\u00a0He didn\u2019t have a great combine but he did make one of the more memorable plays.\u00a0 He was running the Guantlet Drill which starts with the receiver from a standing start, jumping completely around and catching a pass from a thrower, then dropping the ball and jumping back to catch another ball.\u00a0 Then he runs along the 50-yard line and catches another ball from one side, drops it and looks back to the other side catches\/dops that ball, switches again and catches\/drops another ball and finally switches again and catches the ball and runs up the sideline. \u00a0Well Holker got a little confused and kept the 5<sup>th<\/sup> pass and started up the sideline when he realized another ball was coming his way.\u00a0 He reached out with one hand and snared the ball and took both balls with him to the end zone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Quinyon Mitchell CB Toledo<\/strong> \u2013 Ran a 4.33 40-yard dash which combined with his outstanding Senior Bowl week will solidify a top 50 draft position.\u00a0 He could possibly be a 1<sup>st<\/sup> round pick.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Daequan Hardy CB Penn State<\/strong> \u2013 ran a 4.38 40-yard dash.\u00a0 He was a little-known slot corner, and his outstanding time will have the scouts going back and looking at his video again.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Theo Johnson TE Penn State<\/strong> &#8211; Is the 1<sup>st<\/sup> player I have seen with a perfect 10 Relative Athletic Score.\u00a0 He ran the 40 in 4.57 seconds.\u00a0 The question is how good a football player he is.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Losers <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Audric Estime\u2019<\/strong> <strong>RB Notre Dame<\/strong> \u2013 ran a pedestrian 4.71 40-yard dash.\u00a0 That number will get you dropped off almost every team\u2019s draft board.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dillon Johnson RB Washington<\/strong> \u2013 Same story, a 4.68 40 is pretty bad,<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dylan Laube RB New Hampshire<\/strong> \u2013 He had a good 3-cone time of 6.84, but his 40 was a below average 4.54 which could hurt him despite the good showing at the Senior Bowl.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cody Schrader RB Missouri<\/strong> \u2013 the 5\u20198\u201d 202 lb runningback led the SEC (1467 yards) in rushing but had a 4.61 40-yard dash.\u00a0 His is a great story after receiving no D1 offers he attends DII Truman State for two years and puts up gawdy numbers.\u00a0 He received an invite to walk-on at Missouri and jumps at it despite a higher profile transfer already there.\u00a0 He unseats the transfer and goes on to become the leader of the team.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Other notes from the Combine:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The top three QBs didn\u2019t throw, the top WR Harrison didn\u2019t do anything but interview.\u00a0 Only one TE did the weightlifting.\u00a0 Only one DL, Justin Jefferson DT LSU, lifted over 30 reps.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Local players fare well<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mike Sainristil CB Michigan<\/strong> \u2013 Ran a 4.47 40 which is good, but he was outstanding in the Guantlet drill.\u00a0 He should have as he is a converted WR.\u00a0 He actually performed that drill better than most receivers. So don\u2019t be surprised to see him playing some offense too.\u00a0 Most see him as a slot corner, but I see him as a deep safety with the makeup speed to cover a lot of ground.\u00a0 If the Patriots don\u2019t sign a Free Safety in Free Agency, I could see Sainristril drafted to play there.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CJ Hanson G Holy Cross<\/strong> \u2013 Ran a very good 5.00 40.\u00a0 He stands 6\u20195\u201d 300 lbs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Christian Haynes G Connecticut<\/strong> \u2013 Ran a 5.03 which is good for a player his size (6\u20193\u201d 313 lb).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Christian Mahogany G Boston College<\/strong> \u2013 at 6\u20193\u201d 314 lbs ran a 5.13<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Pro Days start this week<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>These are the few Pro Days I know as of this writing:<\/p>\n<p>March 6: Northwestern<\/p>\n<p>March 7: Purdue<\/p>\n<p>March 12: Oregon<\/p>\n<p>March 13: Georgia<\/p>\n<p>March 18: Iowa<\/p>\n<p>March 19: Army<\/p>\n<p>March 20: Alabama, USC<\/p>\n<p>March 21: Notre Dame<\/p>\n<p>March 22: Michigan<\/p>\n<p>March 27: LSU, Ole Miss<\/p>\n<p>March 27-30: Big 12 Pro Day<\/p>\n<p>March 29: Maryland<\/p>\n<p><strong>Important Dates <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>March 5\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Prior to 4:00 pm EST &#8211; Deadline for clubs to assign the Franchise or Transition Tag<\/p>\n<p>March 11- 13\u00a0 Legal Tampering Period where team can talk with potential Free Agents<\/p>\n<p>March 13 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 League Year starts \u2013 Teams can sign Free Agents \u2013 Trading Period starts at 4:00<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Underwear Olympics has been completed!
