Some Patriots-related thoughts this afternoon, as well some news Morsels:<\/p>\n

Is Belichick taking back his team?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Last season the players were much more vocal in their opposition to the coaching staff.\u00a0 This was Belichick’s decision to bring in Matt Patricia and Joe Judge as offensive coordinator and QB coach respectively.\u00a0 The players expressed their dissatisfaction with the coaches in the position room and when nothing changed they took it to the media. \u00a0\u00a0The players were openly challenging Belichicks decision.\u00a0 Further, the players were not as disciplined as they were in the past, taking stupid penalties, not completing pass routes, and just making stupid plays.<\/p>\n

The Patriots have already rid themselves of two of the more vocal players in Brian Hoyer and Jakobi Meyers.\u00a0 When Pro Football Talk broke the story that Mac Jones had been put up for trade offers around the league, they don\u2019t post that story unless someone from the Patriots organization leaked the story.\u00a0 When there is smoke there is fire and it appears that Belichick is putting pressure on Mac Jones to get in line.\u00a0\u00a0 Belichick had the opportunity to squelch these rumors and it has been radio silence from Foxboro.<\/p>\n

Mac Jones Assassination <\/strong><\/h3>\n

Jones went outside the organization for advice about the situation he was put in last season.\u00a0 Belichick is still pissed that he did that and floated the story that he was made available for trade.\u00a0 This is another stab at Mac Jones.\u00a0 What team actually changes the offense and brings in inexperienced coaches to run the offense?\u00a0 It was incredibly unfair to the development of the 2nd<\/sup> year player.\u00a0 They dumbed down the offense not because the QB couldn\u2019t handle the complicated terminology and execution.\u00a0 Jones flourished under McDaniel\u2019s offense as a rookie.\u00a0 They did it because the Offensive coordinators Matt Patricia and Joe Judge couldn\u2019t handle it.\u00a0 Patricia and Judge were Bill Belichick\u2019s mistake and bringing in Bill O\u2019Brien was an admission that they didn\u2019t work out.<\/p>\n

Devin McCourty in his retirement announcement press conference stated that he had tremendous confidence in Jones.\u00a0 He further stated that Jones is a regular at Gillette trying to improve himself for the upcoming season.\u00a0 Jones doesn\u2019t have to be there, yet he is.<\/p>\n

Scott Zolak on 98.5 the Sports Hub made a statement that Bailey Zappe isn\u2019t that far off from Jones.\u00a0 Zappe did remarkably well when he played.\u00a0 However, Zappe played against inferior opponents.\u00a0 Mac Jones is their leader and has a higher ceiling.\u00a0 Stop trying to drag this guy down.\u00a0 He has the potential to be a top-10 QB in the league.\u00a0 Give him a solid Offensive Line and better receiver weapons and I think he will flourish.\u00a0 If we are having the same questions about Jones’s ability after a year under O\u2019Brien then we will need to look for a better answer at QB.<\/p>\n

Patriots are looking for a Veteran backup QB<\/strong><\/h3>\n

There is one veteran available that I would like the team to sign.\u00a0 That player is former BC QB, Matt Ryan.\u00a0 Sign him with the knowledge that he is unlikely to see any playing time, but he will serve as a sounding board veteran that Jones and Zappe can lean on for advice.\u00a0 Remember that Brian Hoyer is not here any longer because he agreed with Jones about the ineptitude of the coaching.\u00a0 To add insult to injury, Matt Patricia was supposed to be the Offensive Line coach.\u00a0 Their inability to protect the QB and Patricia’s inability to make corrections or adjustments is one of the main reasons we had two QBs hurt.\u00a0 They never gave the QBs sufficient time to make plays.<\/p>\n

Yodny Cajuste signs his RFA tender<\/strong><\/h3>\n

That gives the Patriots another young veteran (27) for camp and competition.\u00a0 The former 3rd<\/sup> round pick #101, Cajuste was drafted injured with a Quad injury.\u00a0 He has played in 17 games with 7 starts.\u00a0 Last season he started weeks 5 and 6, then went on IR in week 7.\u00a0 He was reactivated on Oct 29th<\/sup>.\u00a0 \u00a0If he can stay healthy they may have something. Can Adrian Klemm get the best out of him?<\/p>\n

Dante Scarnecchia was named to the Patriots Hall of Fame <\/strong><\/h3>\n

In a surprise move by Patriots owner Robert Kraft, he announced to the Patriots Hall of Fame committee, the selection of Dante Scarnecchia as a Contributor.\u00a0 He waived the requirement to be retired for 4 years.\u00a0 Scarnecchia was present as a member of the committee for Krafts announcement\u00a0 The news brought the group to a standing ovation for Scar.<\/p>\n

Scarnecchia worked as a Special Teams, Assistant to the Head coach, and Offensive Line coach in his 34 years with the Patriots.\u00a0 Dante came in with Ron Meyer from Southern Methodist University in 1982.\u00a0 He left briefly with Meyers to coach the Indianapolis Colts but was back two years later.\u00a0 Scarnecchia is also receiving an award of achievement from the Pro Football Hall of Fame.\u00a0 Scarnecchia is the first coach to enter the Patriots Hall of Fame and the 3rd<\/sup> non-player.<\/p>\n

This is a well-deserved recognition of Scarnecchia\u2019s hard work over his 34 years.\u00a0 He coached under Ron Meyers, Raymond Berry, Dick McPherson, Bill Parcells, Pete Carroll, and Bill Belichick.\u00a0 He was on the coaching staff for 10 of the teams’ 11 Super Bowl appearances and has 6 Super Bowl rings.\u00a0 His son, Steve, is the Chief of Staff for the New York Jets.<\/p>\n

Smoke and Mirrors <\/strong><\/h3>\n

It has got to that point that the rumor mills are churning and teams are pushing out false narratives to throw off their competitors.\u00a0 Here are a few that involve the Patriots.<\/p>\n

  1. Scouts say this Wide Receiver class is not as good as past drafts \u2013 Put out by teams that want a WR but not in the 1st<\/sup>\u00a0 The Patriots have been rumored to be enamored with Zay Flowers WR BC.\u00a0 \u00a0This is the worst-kept secret in the league.\u00a0 Why do the Patriots leak out through their favored media scribe that Flowers was one of their 30 visits allowed by the league?\u00a0 On that visit, Flowers took the red-eye from Las Vegas and arrived in Boston at 6 am.\u00a0 Flowers went directly to Gillette Stadium and spent the entire day there.\u00a0 The Patriots coaching staff had access to Flowers at the East-West Shrine game where they coached.\u00a0 They also attended his Pro Day at BC.<\/li>\n
  2. Patriots may take RB Jahmyr Gibbs in the 2nd<\/sup> round \u2013 Yes Gibbs played for Bill O\u2019Brien at Alabama and who would know him any better? From the reports, Gibbs is a terrific receiver that was underutilized in that capacity at Alabama.\u00a0 Is this just speculation from a writer because they were together at Alabama or is there any truth to it?<\/li>\n
  3. Patriots don\u2019t select O linemen that don\u2019t have multiple years as a starter and have played in the Senior Bowl. They are 8 for 8 in matching those criteria.\u00a0 This includes the selection of any O-linemen in the top 50 O-linemen in all drafts.\u00a0 Sebastian Vollmer is the highest selection of a non-senior bowl O-lineman.\u00a0 Sea Bass didn\u2019t get an invite to the Combine but did play in the East-West Shrine game.\u00a0 He had 25 starts at RT for the Houston Cougars.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
