A recap of the Senior Bowl and East-West Shrine game practices <\/strong><\/p>\n

Both games are in the books and we have learned about several players we have not seen play.\u00a0 The practices leading up to the games were more important than the game itself.\u00a0 The Patriots coaching staff got a huge advantage coaching the West Team in the East-West game.\u00a0 \u00a0The coaches got to observe how the players took coaching and criticism, up close and personal.<\/p>\n

Senior Bowl Practice Players of the Week<\/strong><\/p>\n

The important thing about these awards is that the opposing peers make the selection.\u00a0 The Offensive Line Player of the Week is selected by the Defensive lineman they dominated all week.<\/p>\n

Consensus Top 10 players<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tyjae Spears RB Tulane<\/strong> \u2013 He was listed on all six top players list.\u00a0 What I liked about Spears was his pass blocking and receiving.\u00a0 His route running was terrific.\u00a0 He stands 5\u2019 10\u201d,204 lbs,\u00a0 and runs an estimated 4.47 40-yard dash. \u00a0\u00a0The video of him blocking Aubrey Miller LB, Jackson St is terrific.<\/p>\n

Dawand Jones OT Ohio St<\/strong> \u2013 He is massive at 6\u20198\u201d and 350 lbs.\u00a0 He played RT at Ohio St but some believe he can play LT in the NFL.<\/p>\n

Darnell Wright OT Tennessee<\/strong> \u2013 Wright had a terrific week of practice and was named American Team practice player of the week.\u00a0\u00a0 He is 6\u20195\u201d and 342 lbs.\u00a0 He was a three-year starter in the SEC, two at RT and his senior year at LT.<\/p>\n

John Michael Schmitz C Minnesota<\/strong> \u2013 at 6\u20194\u201d and 320 lbs Schmitz can play either G or C.\u00a0\u00a0 He is a 6th<\/sup> year senior and will be 24 at the start of the 2023 season.<\/p>\n

Keeanu Benton DT Wisconsin<\/strong> \u2013 6\u20194\u201d, 317 lbs dominated the line in the Senior Bowl practices.\u00a0 Plays the NT position and eats up space in the interior.\u00a0 Had 10 TFL and 2 PBU to go along with 4.5 sacks.<\/p>\n

Nate \u201cTank\u201d Dell WR Houston<\/strong> \u2013 5\u20198\u201d 165 lbs.\u00a0 He is small but lightning-quick.\u00a0 He consistently beat CBs at the line of scrimmage and again at the top of his routes.\u00a0 Expected to run in the 4.3s.<\/p>\n

Will McDonald Edge Iowa St<\/strong>. \u2013 He was mentioned in 5 of 6 reviews.\u00a0 6\u20194\u201d 241 lbs and an estimated 4.62 40.\u00a0 Impressed with his pass drop as well as his one-on-one pass rush moves.<\/p>\n

Daiyan Henley LB Washington St <\/strong>\u2013 6\u20191\u201d 230 4.53 40\u00a0 He is one of that new breed of smaller \/ faster linebackers.\u00a0 His speed was evident all week.\u00a0 The question was could he hold up over the course of a season playing at that weight?\u00a0 He is smaller than Patriots Safety Kyle Dugger.<\/p>\n

Jayden Reed WR, Michigan St<\/strong> \u00a0– 5\u201911\u201d 190lbs 4.42 40 He was the most consistent Wide Receiver all week in practice.\u00a0 He was named a Practice Player of the week and showed up in 2 other reports.<\/p>\n

Darius Rush CB South Carolina<\/strong> \u2013 6\u2019 2\u201d 196 lbs 4.52 40 He is another big corner that is popular with the scouts.\u00a0 \u00a0He was also voted practice player of the week by his peers.\u00a0 He showed up on 2 of 6 reports.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

East West Shrine Game Re-Cap<\/strong><\/p>\n

The biggest takeaway from the East-West game was the Patriots’ coaching staff participation.\u00a0 Bill Belichick took that to mean hands-on coaching as he gave several of the West Stars tips.\u00a0 Troy Brown was the winning coach in what was a boring game.\u00a0 Jake Moody K from Michigan was the Offensive MVP with 4 FGs, 2 of those from 51 yards.\u00a0 Trey Dean, S Florida was the Defensive MVP with an interception and several key tackles.\u00a0 Dean is big at 6\u20193\u201d 210 lbs and still runs a 4.5 40.\u00a0 The word out of the game is that the Patriots coaches are enamored with a pair of Defensive players Mohamoud Diabate LB Utah and Isaiah Moore LB NC State.\u00a0 \u00a0I liked Michael Turk P Oklahoma.\u00a0 He boomed punts all week, especially his hang time.\u00a0 Turk was also the holder for Moody.\u00a0 I have the Patriots selecting both Moody and Turk with late-round picks.<\/p>\n

Patriots coaching staff coming into focus <\/strong><\/p>\n

Will Lawing, a former member of Bill O\u2019Briens coaching staff will be joining the Patriots.\u00a0 It was unknown what position he will be coaching, but it appears that he may be filling the spot vacated by Nick Caley, the former TE coach.\u00a0 Caley left to join Kyle Shanahan in LA to coach their TEs.\u00a0 Caley did not sign a contract extension last year and was passed over for the Offensive coordinator position.\u00a0 He was blocked from leaving with Josh McDaniels last year and I am sure there are some hard feelings over that.<\/p>\n

The new Offensive line coach appears to be Adrian Klemm.\u00a0 The former Patriot #1 pick leaves the Oregon Ducks where he led them to the #13 rushing offense in 2022.\u00a0 The official announcements have not been made.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Morse’s Morsels\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Cole Strange was not as bad as we thought<\/strong><\/p>\n

Strange allowed a QB pressure on 4.1% of the times he dropped into pass coverage snaps in 2022.\u00a0 Now that number isn\u2019t great, but it was the best of any rookie Offensive Lineman.\u00a0 Put into that context, Strange wasn\u2019t quite as bad as we thought.\u00a0 In fact, he allowed only 1 QB pressure in the final 2 games.<\/p>\n

HBCU Legacy Bowl Feb 25th<\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n

The annual Historically Black Colleges and University (HBCU) Legacy bowl features players from the HBCU conferences.\u00a0 The game is sponsored by the NFL Players Association and features up-and-coming black coaches.\u00a0 This gives the players and coaches exposure they wouldn\u2019t normally get.\u00a0 The game will be at 3:00 on the NFL Network.\u00a0 A combine-like workout will be held on 2\/20 for these players.<\/p>\n

Trent Brown on the cutting Board<\/strong><\/p>\n

One player that I would consider cutting would be OT Trent Brown.\u00a0 He commands an $11M salary and does not play up to that number.\u00a0 According to PatsCap Miguel Benzan, cutting Brown would create $7.5M in Cap Space.\u00a0 Brown would have $4.25M in dead money if cut.\u00a0 If another team were to sign him, the Patriots could recoup up to $3M on the 2024 salary cap.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
