{"id":45288,"date":"2023-01-26T06:30:09","date_gmt":"2023-01-26T11:30:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/?p=45288"},"modified":"2023-01-25T19:48:33","modified_gmt":"2023-01-26T00:48:33","slug":"morse-patriots-roster-analysis-offensive-line","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/2023\/01\/26\/morse-patriots-roster-analysis-offensive-line\/","title":{"rendered":"MORSE: Patriots Roster Analysis &#8211; Offensive Line"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is the second article analyzing the team&#8217;s performance and the future of the personnel.\u00a0 The Offensive Line will come into focus in this piece.<\/p>\n<p>The Offensive Line was truly offensive.\u00a0 Right from the start of camp, it was apparent they were not getting the new blocking scheme.\u00a0 \u00a0Part of the new offense was running the stretch runs that the Shanahan offense utilizes.\u00a0 That takes special personnel that can execute those moves.\u00a0 It also requires someone that has intricate knowledge of executing those plays.\u00a0 The Patriots&#8217; Offensive coaches (Patricia and Judge) failed to teach this.\u00a0 Patricia in particular was at fault for spending too much time with Mac Jones and ignoring the Offensive Line.\u00a0 Patricia was supposed to be the O-line coach and yet those duties often fell to the inexperienced Billy Yates (3rd-year assistant coach).\u00a0\u00a0 I was also dismayed by the number of non-play penalties assessed to the Patriot&#8217;s O-line.\u00a0 Isaiah Wynn and Trent Brown were guilty of motion penalties too many times.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Trent Brown <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He was a shell of the player we thought he could be.\u00a0 He has had one good season in the last four years and that was when Dante Scarnecchia could motivate him.\u00a0 He scoffed at Billy Yates trying to tell him what to do.\u00a0 Brown is lazy and that attitude showed up on the field.\u00a0 \u00a0According to Pro Football Focus, Brown was ranked 47<sup>th<\/sup> of 79 Tackles.\u00a0 His 67.4 rating was the third worse of his career after having a 74.4 rating (the best of his career) last season.\u00a0 It\u2019s time for the Patriots to cut bait with him and send him and his $11M contract to the curb.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Isaiah Wynn <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>How bad was Wynn?\u00a0 His PFF rating dropped from 82.6 to 54.6 in 2 years.\u00a0 He had the most penalties of any offensive lineman in the league.\u00a0 For Right Tackles, he was 75<sup>th<\/sup> of 84.\u00a0 He looked as if he just didn\u2019t want to be out there anymore.\u00a0 I can\u2019t believe the Patriots exercised his 5th-year option guaranteeing him $11M for 2022.\u00a0 He had his money and he didn\u2019t care.\u00a0 The Patriots eventually benched him after injuries forced him to IR. \u00a0\u00a0The lack of concentration was evident all year by the number of dead ball motion infractions.\u00a0 Between him and Brown, the Patriot&#8217;s Offense was put in untenable situations with their penalties.\u00a0 Wynn is a Free Agent, good riddance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Yodny Cajuste<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Is a Restricted Free Agent and should be retained at a low salary.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think anyone is going to sign him.\u00a0 He played in only 6 games for Isaiah Wynn but was in and out of the lineup due to injuries and illness.\u00a0 He is only 27 (this February) and should be retained for depth.\u00a0 \u00a0The former 3<sup>rd<\/sup> round selection should be offered an RFA contract but not at his given round.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michael Onwenu<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s talk about the anchor of the Offensive line for years to come.\u00a0 The Patriots did the right thing by not moving Owenu to Right Tackle.\u00a0 They have a potential Pro Bowl guard in Onwenu.\u00a0 PFF loves him and gave him a 79.3 rating and named him as their 3<sup>rd<\/sup> Guard on their All-Pro team.\u00a0 I must add that Quinn Meinerz was ranked right behind Onwenu with a 77.7 rating.\u00a0 If the Patriots had only drafted Meinerz, they would have solved their LG problem.\u00a0 They wouldn\u2019t have had to draft Cole Strange in the 1<sup>st<\/sup> round.\u00a0 I know hindsight! Back to Owenu.\u00a0 The Patriots recognized they were holding Onwenu back by playing Shaq Mason.\u00a0 Unfortunately, they gave away Mason in order to dump his salary.\u00a0 The Tampa Bay Bucs were desperate for OGs as they lost both their starters.\u00a0 We should have gotten more from them.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0Onwenu is the rock the Patriots build their Offensive Line around.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Connor McDermott<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>McDermott played well down the stretch.\u00a0 The 6\u20198\u201d, 305 lb. RT was the 6th round selection by the Patriots in 2017.\u00a0 He was a late cut by the Patriots because they were loaded at Tackle.\u00a0 \u00a0The Patriots had Nate Solder, Marcus Cannon, Cameron Fleming, and LaAdrian Waddle.\u00a0 McDermott was beaten for a roster spot by Cole Croston an Undrafted Free Agent that played at Iowa.\u00a0 Croston was chosen because he could play both G and T.\u00a0 McDermott was immediately claimed by Buffalo and spent two years as a backup.\u00a0 When the Bills released him in October of 2019, the Jets claimed him immediately.\u00a0 McDermott signed a one-year extension with the Jets in 2020, was released, and signed to their Practice Squad.\u00a0 The Patriots, desperate for tackle help signed him off the Jets Practice Squad on November 22<sup>nd<\/sup>.\u00a0 He started the next Sunday and finished the season at RT.\u00a0 \u00a0PFF graded McDermott 65.8, the 49<sup>th<\/sup> of 84 RTs.\u00a0 However, his Run Blocking grade was 79.8, the 9<sup>th<\/sup> best in the league for RTs.\u00a0 His Pass blocking was the issue and his 53.7 grade reflected that. \u00a0Can a new O-line coach work with McDermott on his Pass Blocking? \u00a0He is currently a Free Agent.\u00a0 After doing the research on McDermott, he just might be worth re-signing, especially after reading more about McGlinchey.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marcus Cannon <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cannon tried to give the Patriots some help after he was released by Houston, \u00a0but he had nothing left in the tank.\u00a0 He was injured and ended up on IR for the rest of the season.\u00a0 He is a Free Agent that won\u2019t be back.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cole Strange\u00a0<\/strong> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Fair or Unfair, Strange was selected in the 1<sup>st<\/sup> round and didn\u2019t perform like a 1<sup>st<\/sup> round pick.\u00a0 He struggled, especially when Andrews was out of the lineup. \u00a0His run grade was 48.3. 67<sup>th<\/sup> of 76.\u00a0 However, his pass-blocking rating was 67.8, 34<sup>th<\/sup> of 74 which is encouraging.\u00a0 In his last two games, he didn\u2019t give up a sack and only gave up one pressure.\u00a0 Cole Strange was thrown into the pool and told to sink or swim.\u00a0 He struggled.\u00a0 He doesn\u2019t have NFL size or strength.\u00a0 He needs to add weight to his frame.\u00a0 He has the lateral quickness to be a good guard in the league and didn\u2019t get the benefit of sitting and learning while getting stronger.\u00a0 I look forward to seeing what progress he can make under a real O-Line coach.<\/p>\n<p><strong>David Andrews<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He is a Captain and a prominent leader.\u00a0 Although undersized, he is a scrapper and gives it his everything out there.\u00a0 Getting up in age now as he will turn 31 before the season starts.\u00a0 Entering his 9<sup>th<\/sup> season as a former Undrafted Free Agent, Andrews is everything you want in a player.\u00a0 Tough, dogged, a leader by example, and smart, although not physically gifted he makes the best of what he has.\u00a0 He makes everyone around him better.\u00a0 Time is catching up and he is getting nicked up more and more, missing time.\u00a0 The Patriots do not have a true backup center.\u00a0 It\u2019s time for the Patriots to select a Center in the draft that can eventually replace Andrews.<\/p>\n<p><strong>James Ferentz<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I can\u2019t believe we can\u2019t find anyone better than Ferentz.\u00a0 His dad is one of Belichick&#8217;s buddies from his coaching tree.\u00a0 But Ferentz gives them that unassuming steady and unspectacular play of a reserve.\u00a0 He will probably not be invited to camp but will be a phone call away if needed.\u00a0 He is 33 now and will be 34 in the season, that\u2019s old for a lineman.\u00a0 Ferentz is only 6\u20192 and barely weighs 300 pounds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kody Russey, Chase Hines, Andrew Steuber <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Incomplete \u00a0\u00a0Russey was an emergency activation to the roster due to injuries.\u00a0 Hines and Seuber got Red Shirt years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hayden Howerton\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Was signed mid-year to the Practice Squad.\u00a0 \u00a0The SMU product is 6\u20193\u201d, 300 lbs, and came out as a Center but is listed as an OG on the Patriots.com roster.\u00a0 He signed a Futures contract and will be in camp.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bill Murray <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Converted from DT to OL this year and spent the year on the Practice Squad, getting elevated for one game.\u00a0 Murray is listed as 6\u20194\u2019 but only 265 lbs. Could he possibly lose a few more pounds and become a FB as James Devlin did?\u00a0 Devlin was a DT at Brown.\u00a0 Murray was listed at 300 pounds for the draft in 2020 draft.\u00a0 Murray signed a futures contract on Monday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Patriots Bring Back Bill O\u2019Brien<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Great news that Bill O\u2019Brien has been signed as the Offensive Coordinator.\u00a0 He provides immediate respect as a former OC and Head Coach.\u00a0 O\u2019Brien knows what he wants to do and his fiery spirit will bring out the best in the players, or else they will be looking for new employment.\u00a0 He will demand discipline from the players, or they will be looking for new employment.\u00a0 I am assuming that Jerod Mayo will be kicked up to Associate Head Coach, the next step to being Bill Belichick\u2019s replacement.\u00a0 The Offensive Coordinator signing is the 1<sup>st<\/sup> step in the coaching upgrade.\u00a0 Looking for an O-line coach to be next.\u00a0 The Patriots have been reported to have interviewed Adrian Klemm for the O-line position.\u00a0 He interviewed for the Offensive Coordinator position last week.\u00a0 Klemm, a former Patriots 1<sup>st<\/sup> round draft selection, was Bill Belichicks 1<sup>st<\/sup> draft pick as Head Coach of the Patriots.\u00a0 Reports also have the Patriots interested in Saints Offensive Line coach Doug Marrone.\u00a0 The former Buffalo and Jacksonville Head Coach is a close friend of O\u2019Brien.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Get a real O-line coach<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Great 1<sup>st<\/sup> step in the signing of Bill O\u2019Brien as Offensive Coordinator.\u00a0 Now let&#8217;s get an O-line coach.\u00a0 Former Patriot 1st-round selection \u00a0Adrian Klemm has taken a second interview for the O Line coach position.\u00a0 O\u2019Brien has been linked to other Oline coaches like Doug Marrone, presently the New Orleans Saints O-line coach.\u00a0 He is also the former Head Coach in Buffalo and Jacksonville.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know what his contract status is in New Orleans.\u00a0 Obrien and Marrone were together in Alabama in 2021.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Compensatory Picks <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Patriots are expected to receive three compensatory selections in the 2023 Draft.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0This is according to the Over The Cap\u2019s Nick Korte\u2019s\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/overthecap.com\/projecting-the-2023-compensatory-picks\">Projecting the 2023 Compensatory Picks<\/a>. That would bring their total to 11.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bill Murray re-signs with the Patriots<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Practice Squad OG signed a Futures contract with the Patriots.\u00a0 The undersized DT switched to the O-line last season.\u00a0 He spent the year on the Practice Squad and was elevated for 1 game.\u00a0 Murray stands 6\u20193.5\u201d but weighs only 265 lbs.\u00a0 Could he possibly be a candidate to move to Fullback?\u00a0 James Develin was a DT at Brown and then converted to Fullback.\u00a0 That is just 10 lbs more than what Develin played at.<\/p>\n<p><strong>East-West Shrine Game Coaches<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s more about who is not coaching than who is coaching at the East-West Shrine game.\u00a0 Matt Patricia and Joe Judge are not coaching as is Nick Caley whose contract expires at the end of the NFL year.\u00a0 Also defacto Defensive Coordinator Steve Belichick.\u00a0 I am surprised that he isn\u2019t going as a supervisor.<\/p>\n<p>As for the staff working with the college players in Vegas, Bill Belichick, Mayo and O&#8217;Brien will work in supervisory roles. Troy Brown &#8212; the Patriots&#8217; receivers\/returners coach &#8212; will be the head coach. Ross Douglas will be the offensive coordinator and QB coach, Mike Pellegrino is the co-defensive coordinator\/defensive line coach, and Brian Belichick is the co-defensive coordinator\/linebackers coach.<\/p>\n<p>Cam Achord will be the special teams&#8217; supervisor, while Joe Houston will be the special team coordinator.
