{"id":43221,"date":"2022-10-06T12:47:51","date_gmt":"2022-10-06T16:47:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/?p=43221"},"modified":"2022-10-06T12:47:51","modified_gmt":"2022-10-06T16:47:51","slug":"week-5-preview-patriots-vs-detroit-lions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/2022\/10\/06\/week-5-preview-patriots-vs-detroit-lions\/","title":{"rendered":"Week 5 Preview: Patriots vs Detroit Lions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Coach Dan Campbell has the Detroit Lions working hard and together as a team despite a rash of injuries.\u00a0 Don\u2019t dismiss their 1-3 record.\u00a0 They are averaging 35 points a game.\u00a0 However, their Defense has let them down.\u00a0 Last week they lost at home and gave up 48 points to Seattle and Gino Smith.\u00a0 They scored 45 points with a decimated lineup.\u00a0 They were without top running back Deandre Swift and top Wideout Armon Ra St. Brown.\u00a0 \u00a0As of the Wednesday Injury report, they had 8 starters that were Questionable and another that was out.<\/p>\n<p>QB Jared Goff has been producing miracles.\u00a0 He is averaging 281.5 yards passing per game while completing 60.9% of his passes.\u00a0 He is going to have to be great if he wants to compete against the tough Patriot&#8217;s secondary.\u00a0 Goff is 92 of 151 for 1126 yards passing with 11 TDs and just 3 INTs.<\/p>\n<p>The running game is led by D\u2019Andre Swift the third-year back out of Georgia who was a 2<sup>nd<\/sup> round pick in 2020.\u00a0 He missed last week\u2019s game and has 27 rushes for 231 yards, 8.6 yards per carry, and a TD.\u00a0 Jamaal Williams is a more than adequate backup as he has 67 rushes for 276 yards and a 4.5 average.\u00a0 His 6 TDs lead the league running backs. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 #32<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Michael Brockers and Levi Onwuzurike were two of the worst Defensive Tackles last season.\u00a0 Onwuzurike is on IR.\u00a0 Alim McNeill is much better but only ranks #38.\u00a0 Detroit hopes the #1 pick this year Aidan Hutchinson can provide some pass rush.\u00a0 He has been inconsistent, getting all three of his sacks in one half.\u00a0 He leads the Lions in tackles (12) for the D-Line.<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s story for Detroit is the play of rookie 6th-round\u00a0pick (#188) LB Malcolm Rodriquez.\u00a0 I was very high on Rodriquez coming out of Oklahoma State.\u00a0 This is what I wrote about Rodriquez in my Mock Draft #4 in April;<\/p>\n<p>\u201c4<sup>th<\/sup> Round #127 \u2013 Malcom Rodriquez LB Oklahoma State \u2013 The former safety turned ILB led Oklahoma St in tackles as he was all over the field.\u00a0 Rodriquez only stands 5\u201911\u201d, 236 lbs, ran a 4.52 (4.5 handheld) 40, 39 <sup>\u00bd\u00a0 <\/sup>Vertical, 7.02 3-cone, 4.13 Short Shuttle, and an impressive 36 reps on the Bench Press.\u00a0 That Bench Press number would have been tops for an Offensive lineman at the combine.\u00a0 His production at Oklahoma St is off the charts.\u00a0 He finished with 129 tackles in 2021, 89 (in the shortened 2020 season), and 103 in 2019 for a total of 408 over his 5 years at Oklahoma St.\u00a0 In 2021 his 129 tackles were #1 in Big 12, 16 tackles for loss #1 in Big 12, his 408 career tackles were #3 all-time in Big 12, 252 career solo tackles #3 all-time in Big 12.\u00a0 He was a 1<sup>st<\/sup> team all-conference player in 21.\u00a0 Rodriquez is a tackling machine.\u00a0 I am sure that he would be a key contributor on Special Teams immediately while he learns the nuances of the NFL and the Patriots system.\u00a0 His speed cannot be ignored.\u00a0 If you notice the consistent theme is improving the team speed.\u201d\u00a0 Rodriquez leads the team in tackles with 33 through 4 games.<\/p>\n<p>Alex Anzalone has been a consistent player for the Lions.\u00a0 Chris Board is listed as Questionable and Did Not Practice on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The secondary is pretty leaky too Jeff Okudah, the #3 overall pick in 2020 has played just 13 games in two years.\u00a0 Safety Deshaun Elliott is the top tackler in the secondary.\u00a0 \u00a0Safety Tracy Walker was just behind Okudah in tackles and has played one less game.\u00a0 He is now on IR.\u00a0 Kerby Joseph has stepped in at Safety.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Base 4-3<\/strong><\/p>\n<table Forced Fumble, Fumble Recovery, and a Pick Six.\u00a0 He nearly had another pick but missed it and lost his man, but came back and tried to strip the ball from him. \u00a0\u00a0PFF named him the #1 Rookie from Week 4.<\/p>\n<p>Offensive line ratings from PFF are in and Michael Owenu led the team with a 70.2 rating good for the #8 guard.\u00a0 Cole Strange had another difficult game (third in a row).\u00a0 His rating was 51.2 which ranked him #46.\u00a0 The Tackles, Brown was 73.5 and rated #13 while Wynn had a rough day and got benched with a 79 rating and ranked 35.\u00a0 I am surprised PFF did not rank Cannon who played much better than Wynn.\u00a0 David Andrews was a 73 and ranked 10<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>Football Outsiders has an advanced metric called Defense-adjusted Value Over Average (DVOA) and the Patriots Run Offense is ranked #1.\u00a0 They are also rated #1 in Success Rate and Adjusted Line Yards.<\/p>\n<p>Jake Bailey is the worst punter in the league.\u00a0 He is 29<sup>th<\/sup> in both Net and Punting Average.\u00a0 His shank in Sunday\u2019s game set up Green Bay.<\/p>\n<p>Isaiah Wynn was criticized for giving up the sack that knocked out Brian Hoyer.\u00a0 Upon closer inspection, Wynn was held by Green Bay\u2019s Kenny Clark and prevented from getting out to block Rashad Gary.\u00a0 No call.\u00a0 There were 8 no-calls against Green Bay which is the real difference in this game.<\/p>\n<p>Football Outsider has the Patriots&#8217; Defense ranked #10.\u00a0 Their run defense is ranked #31 (next to last).\u00a0 Devin Godchaux and Christian Barmore had awful games against Green Bay.<\/p>\n<p>PFF has Jonathan Jones at 91.5 and Jack Jones at 90.8 ranked as the top two CBs in single coverage.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Coming and Going<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Signed to the Practice Squad veteran Jamie Collins and former Practice Squad QB Garrett Gilbert.\u00a0 The Pats must be pretty desperate to sign Collins.\u00a0 Bill Belichick&#8217;s grand plan for his Linebackers had been an utter failure.\u00a0 They refused to draft a Linebacker in what was one of the deepest Linebacker drafts in years (I wanted two Troy Andersen and Malcolm Rodriquez).\u00a0 Collins will not help.\u00a0 Gilbert was first on the Patriots Practice Squad in 2014 and received a Super Bowl ring as a member of the Practice Squad when the Patriots defeated Seattle in Super Bowl XLIX.\u00a0 He was re-signed on September 17<sup>th<\/sup> of 2021 and spent 13 weeks on the Practice Squad when Washington desperate for a QB signed him off the Patriots Practice Squad.\u00a0 Four days later he was starting against Philadelphia.\u00a0 They lost 27-17 but Gilbert was 20 of 31 for 194 yards.\u00a0 Expect him to be elevated as the backup QB on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Say goodbye to LB Harvey Langhi and WR LaQuan Treadwell from the Practice squad.<\/p>\n<p>The Patriots had one spot available on the 53-man roster and filled it with OT Marcus
