The New England Patriots<\/strong><\/a> opened up week two of training camp on Monday, and for the first time this summer, the pads made a return.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Before the day’s work, the Patriots locked up Pro Bowl punter Jake Bailey to a four-year extension worth $13.5 million ($6.5 guaranteed).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bailey, who turned 25 in June, was entering the final year of his rookie contract and facing a salary-cap charge of $4.05 million. By extending Bailey, his cap charge\u00a0<\/span>was reduced<\/span><\/a>\u00a0by about $1.85 million while increasing the Patriots’ overall cap space to about $4.75 million.<\/span><\/p>\n

As for how the day’s camp unfolded, work covered the running game, kickoffs, and one-on-one drills between wide receivers and defensive backs. Offensive linemen squared off with the defense.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Offensively, Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe were the quarterbacks as Brian Hoyer was absent. Jones<\/span>\u00a0went<\/span><\/a>\u00a010\/15 with an interception as Zappe completed 10\/15 passes between 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In what’s become a common camp occurrence, wide receiver DeVante Parker caught another impressive touchdown grab from Mac Jones, beating Malcolm Butler deep during 11-on-11s.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rookie wide receiver Tyquan Thornton also drew loud applause from fans in attendance after\u00a0<\/span>diving<\/span><\/a>\u00a0for a deep ball with Joejuan Williams in coverage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, on the defensive side of the ball, cornerback Terrance Mitchell continued his strong camp by recording an interception for the third straight day, and Butler bounced back from the Parker touchdown by causing two pass breakups.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

ESPN Boston’s Mike Reiss observed<\/a> rookie guard Cole Strange going through a “welcome to the NFL introduction” as he struggled to block Christian Barmore and Henry Anderson during one-on-one drills. Bill Belichick would take Strange aside to work with him.<\/p>\n
