New England Patriots<\/strong><\/a> quarterback Mac Jones spoke to the media on Thursday, June 9, 2022 and here’s the full transcript of what he had to say:<\/p>\n

On the fact he does a good air guitar …<\/strong><\/p>\n

[Laughs] Thank you.<\/p>\n

On his comfort level with the new setup coaching-wise …<\/strong><\/p>\n

“I think we have a great group of coaches that obviously have a lot of experience not only on offense, but defense, special teams, all that.\u00a0 So they’ve seen a lot of football.\u00a0 And the most important thing is just getting on the same page, speaking the same lingo between the players, the coaches, and we’ve done a good job of that.\u00a0 It’s obviously a learning experience and we’re trying to grow together and move in the right direction and I definitely think we made pretty good strides there in the past couple weeks.\u00a0 You can’t be done with OTAs and let that fall off.\u00a0 You’ve got to carry that through the season.\u00a0 That’s the most important part and we understand that for training camp, we’ve got to just keep better every day and keep communicating and keep talking.”<\/p>\n

On whether or not the sense he’s getting is that things have been simplified on offense so they can play faster …<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Yeah, I think the idea for every offense is to have an identity and to be able to play fast and play quicker and put stress on the defense is important for any offense.\u00a0 We want to be able to do that consistently and we want to be able to do whatever we want to do at any given time.\u00a0 Whether that’s a run, pass, play-action, short, medium or long.\u00a0 We’re trying to be able to have a little bit of variety and just grow together with the young guys and the old guys.\u00a0 We have guys that have been in the system for many years, and then we have some younger guys, like myself, who have kind of seen both sides.\u00a0 There’s finding a good balance and then growing together as a unit is the most important part.\u00a0 At the end of the day, football is football.\u00a0 Offensive football, there’s only so much you can do.\u00a0 You can’t recreate the wheel with every different system.\u00a0 I think you either run it or you throw it, it’s really that simple and that’s pretty much all there is to it.”<\/p>\n

On getting snaps from Belichick and what it’s been like having him be so ‘hands on’ with the offense …\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Yeah, it was good.\u00a0 I know you guys saw that, I’m sure you enjoyed it.\u00a0 But it was fun for me to get snaps from him.\u00a0 We were just talking through something with the running backs and, like you said, he’s very hands-on.\u00a0 Last year, he was more with the defense and stuff but now it’s like, ‘O.K., let me show you this,’ and he’s kind of coaching us and coaching the running backs in that drill about the way that they need to get through the line of scrimmage.\u00a0 He’s very hands-on and I feel like we’ve made a lot of growth together as an offensive unit with him, and then obviously personally with him and as a quarterback group.\u00a0 We’re all on the same page and, like I said, he’s seen the most amount of football of any of our coaches, he’s seen defense offense, and special teams, so having his input is always going to be very beneficial to me because he knows what puts stress on the defense.\u00a0 Now with him being very hands-on, he knows how we can stress the defense and how it’s going to play into our hand.”<\/p>\n

On his work with Tre Nixon and how he would describe his connection and Nixon’s growth …<\/strong><\/p>\n

“I think our receiver group has done a great job this spring of coming together.\u00a0 We have a really good balance between speed and route-running ability and blocking defenders in the run game and all that.\u00a0 We have a very good group of guys and Tre, like you said, came in with me.\u00a0 We used to drive to the facility every day together last year, take our COVID test, and then go to work.\u00a0 He’s a grinder.\u00a0 In the offseason he’s there with all the guys at the throwing sessions, I don’t think he missed a single one.\u00a0 \u00a0He’s been grinding so he needs to continue to do that just like everybody else.\u00a0 He adds that good speed to the group and he’s a nice compliment and hopefully he’ll be able to continue to grow like everybody else and we can kind of have a full group here where we can substitute in and out and let those guys go make the plays.”<\/p>\n

On the areas he’s focusing on to try and evolve as he grows from year one to year two …<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Yeah, I think just keep the main thing the main thing and that’s getting better as a football player and, for me, that’s identifying things at each phase.\u00a0 So OTAs are kind of through here and just figure out what I need to do better for the season.\u00a0 For me, it’s always focusing on the little things, whether that’s nutrition, my footwork, how can I get my arm stronger, what can I do better in the film room?\u00a0 So it’s always a self-evaluation to get better and that’s always good to do when you have a little bit of time to sit back and do the evaluation.\u00a0 I’ve had a lot of time to do that and apply it in OTAs and then obviously the important part is applying that in the season and helping us win games.\u00a0 That’s the whole point of putting in the work.\u00a0 You do it to win games and try and help the team.”<\/p>\n

On if he has anything to say about the kid who found an ultra-rare rookie card of his who sold it and made ‘what amounts to a nice college fund’ …<\/strong><\/p>\n

“I didn’t know that, but that’s really cool.\u00a0 You know, congratulations, I guess? [laughs] That’s cool that he got a chance to pay for college and all that.\u00a0 I’m glad that with trading cards and stuff like that it’s all cool.\u00a0 I don’t really follow it too much but, you know, congratulations.”<\/p>\n

On if he’s still working on improving his Chinese speaking skills …<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Wo hen hao – I’m still good.\u00a0 But, I have been busy.\u00a0 I wish I had more time to sharpen back my Chinese.\u00a0 But I do appreciate everyone that follows us internationally.\u00a0 Football is a great sport whether that be in China or anywhere else.\u00a0 Hopefully, we have a really good year and people can continue to watch us, and one day I’ll have some more time to sharpen back up on my Chinese.”<\/p>\n

On he and his teammates celebrating big plays and how important it is for him and the other guys to bring the energy to be the type of offense they want to be …\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Yeah, I think that’s my job is to just distribute the ball to the playmakers.\u00a0 I want it to be about them making plays, whether that be the tight ends, running backs or receivers.\u00a0 At the end of the day, we’re all doing this for each other.\u00a0 I think we have that chemistry.\u00a0 Like you said, there’s a big play, everyone’s excited because they know that another big play could be coming their way.\u00a0 I think that is good.\u00a0 It’s more of a ‘spread the wealth’ type deal and let everybody have a chance to make a play.\u00a0 That’s what football’s all about.\u00a0 When we score touchdowns, that’s the whole goal is to celebrate with your teammates, celebrate with the offensive line, and continue to do that every drive that you can.\u00a0 It all starts in offseason training.\u00a0 Just getting together as a group, understanding what we’re trying to do and then going out there and doing it and, like you said, having fun, while you’re doing it.”<\/p>\n

On his approach to this offseason and that it’s the first spring since high school where it’s clear he’s the top QB on the team and if it freed him up to try some different things this offseason …<\/strong><\/p>\n

“I think I’m always competing against myself.\u00a0 Regardless of the situations I’ve been in, I try to be better than I was yesterday.\u00a0 I mean, as you get more comfortable with the system and get more comfortable, you try different things and see what works and see what doesn’t.\u00a0 But I do that, regardless, every year, try to push myself, try to make myself better, whether that’s my feet, my eyes, throwing, whatever it may be, being a better teammate, there’s things you can evaluate.\u00a0 But at the end of the day, it goes back to me as a person and a player and just being the best that I can be.”<\/p>\n

On the fact that last year was non-stop from his college season to a national championship, the combine, etc. and how this offseason has been different having had time to focus on himself …\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

“I think it’s been a good learning experience to go through it and understand that after going through a full season, I know generally how it works and how fast each game comes up and how to game plan each week, how to be more efficient and working out and all that, timing up when I want to watch film, so there’s a big self-evaluation.\u00a0 Just trying to perfect that.\u00a0 It’s still not going to be perfect.\u00a0 It’s going to change every year.\u00a0 I’m just going to take it day-by-day and continue to do that in training camp and then just do like we did last year and try and build momentum and then be more consistent, obviously, as the season goes along.”<\/p>\n

On the importance of what he wants to get done prior to camp …<\/strong><\/p>\n

“I think we’ve had a good few days and few weeks, really.\u00a0 So it’s all about finishing strong and continuing to evaluate us as an offense, really.\u00a0 We’ve made strides but we know where we want to get to and that’s going to take a lot of work beyond just OTAs, and we’re going to get there.\u00a0 At this point, we just have to, like I said, self-evaluate, make sure we push through and figure out the things we like, figure out the things we don’t like, and then carry that over to training camp.”<\/p>\n

On Chris Simms describing him as the best rookie decision-maker that he’s ever seen at the position and his reaction and how much ownership he feels he has of the offense …<\/strong><\/p>\n

“I think every year is a new year and what we did last year was last year.\u00a0 The goal is to, like I said, improve on the things that I can and take those learning experiences and grow from them – the good and the bad.\u00a0 It’s just a learning experience and as you get older, you get more experience and you’re more comfortable, that’s just how life works.\u00a0 At the end of the day I’m just going to stick to my routine, stick to the process of working hard and doing the things I can do to be a better quarterback and a better teammate, and hopefully, there’s growth there.\u00a0 Sometimes you don’t always want to look at the results.\u00a0 You kind of just have to grind it out and learn from what you learn from and move on.\u00a0 So I’m excited for this next year.”<\/p>\n

On if he feels ownership of the offense …<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Yeah.\u00a0 I think that’s the whole point of the quarterback, right, is to lead the guys around you, get them the ball, get the ball out quick, get the ball out on time, and let the offensive line do their thing. It’s a group effort, it’s not just one person out there.\u00a0 There’s 11 people and at the end of the day, I have the ball every play and I have to make the decisions to help the team win.\u00a0 You’ve got to stop from losing before you can win.\u00a0 So that’s the goal – to do that even better this next year and then we’ll kind of see where we’re at.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
