{"id":41827,"date":"2022-06-09T13:00:20","date_gmt":"2022-06-09T17:00:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/?p=41827"},"modified":"2022-06-09T17:12:15","modified_gmt":"2022-06-09T21:12:15","slug":"runningback-position-analysis-and-mini-camp-notes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/2022\/06\/09\/runningback-position-analysis-and-mini-camp-notes\/","title":{"rendered":"Runningback Position Analysis and Mini-Camp Notes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Runningbacks<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the strongest position on the team is the Runningback room.\u00a0 The Patriots have two strong RBs in Damien Harris and Rhamondre Stevenson.\u00a0\u00a0 Neither has achieved elite status because of the way the Patriots deploy their backs.\u00a0 Seldom does either back get over 20 carries a game.\u00a0 The Patriots have deployed a running back by committee approach.\u00a0 Third down passing downs have been dedicated to a designated back that is a great receiver and pass blocker.\u00a0 The Patriots surprised everyone and drafted two running backs this year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Damien Harris \u00a0&#8211;<\/strong>Harris started his pro career slowly by actually getting a redshirt year his 1<sup>st<\/sup> year in the league in 2019.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t play at all.\u00a0 In year 2 he ended up rushing for 691 yards, a 5.0 yards per carry (YPC), and 2 TDs.\u00a0 Last season was even better running for 961 yards and 15 TDs.\u00a0 His YPC dropped to 4.6, which is still really good.\u00a0 This is Harris\u2019 contract year.\u00a0 Look for him to put up big numbers.\u00a0 However, the Patriots are unlikely to re-sign him.\u00a0 They drafted 2 RBs this year with the idea of having protection for Harris and White.\u00a0 The Patriots&#8217; offense is still a run 1<sup>st<\/sup> offense (or at least we think it will be).\u00a0 With the new offensive play-caller (Joe Judge) new Offensive Line coaches (Matt Patricia and Billy Yates) and\u00a0 Runningback coach Ivan Fears status up in the air, that leaves 5th-year\u00a0coach Vinnie Sunseri as the assistant Runningbacks coach.\u00a0 Harris got benched in Game 7 after a crucial fumble.\u00a0 Harris started and played in 15 games last season.<\/p>\n<p>Henry McKenna reported that Harris has the most fun at practice than any player.\u00a0 He is the loudest and is cheering every play.\u00a0 He runs out every play, even sprinting downfield as if the block the safety (Phillips) on JJ Taylor\u2019s long catch.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rhamondre Stevenson<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been impressed by Rhamondre\u2019s growth,\u201d Belichick said in a video conference late last season. \u201cHe\u2019s very coachable. When you ask him to do something, he tries hard to do it the way you want him to do it, and he\u2019s improved greatly in every area of the game.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s a player that\u2019s gained a lot of trust and confidence from his teammates, certainly from the coaching staff, really in every area. The running game, the passing game, ball security, blitz pickup, run reads, run technique, and so forth, using the blockers and understanding the blocking schemes. He just gets better every day he goes out on the field.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stevenson is a big back at 5\u2019 11.5\u201d, 227 lbs.\u00a0 He ran a 4.64 40 at his Pro Day.\u00a0 Breakaway speed is not Stevenson\u2019s calling card.\u00a0 Breaking tackles is.\u00a0 His powerful, between the tackles running style, fits the Patriots perfectly.\u00a0 Most fans were pleasantly surprised by Stevenson\u2019s production as a rookie.\u00a0 In 12 games played, Stevenson ran for 606 yards, 4.6 YPC, and 5 TDs.\u00a0 What kind of jump can he make in year two?<\/p>\n<p><strong>James White<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>White is recovering from a horrific hip subluxation.\u00a0 Essentially the head of the humorous bone is shoved into the hip socket violently causing damage to the hip pocket.\u00a0 This is the injury that ruined Bo Jackson\u2019s career.\u00a0\u00a0 White has not practiced in the OTAs or Mini-Camp and I expect that he will start the year on the Physically Unable to Perform list (PUP).\u00a0 That will give the Patriots some roster relief while he gets healthy.<\/p>\n<p>When healthy, White is the premier 3<sup>rd<\/sup> down back.\u00a0 He is an excellent blocker and receiver.\u00a0 This is evident by the 20 points that White scored in Super Bowl LI against the Falcons.<\/p>\n<p>Projecting his stats over the course of a full season White would have had 68 catches for over 500 yards.\u00a0 White enters his 9<sup>th<\/sup> year in the league and turned 30 in February.\u00a0 \u201cSweet Feet\u201d had 87 catches for the Pats in 2018.\u00a0 Don\u2019t forget that White overcame the tragic death of his mother in an auto accident that ruined his 2020 season.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pierre Strong<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I was pleasantly surprised by the Pats taking strong.\u00a0 When making my final draft projection for the Patriots I had Strong as the #158 selection by the Patriots.\u00a0 This was before the pre-draft trade with Houston that sent pick 170 to Houston for picks 183 and 245.\u00a0 That changed the draft and I was unable to make trades the same way I had before the trade.\u00a0 That made it impossible for me to take Strong.<\/p>\n<p>That didn\u2019t mean that I was down on Strong, just the opposite.\u00a0 This is what I wrote about Strong after the combine.\u00a0 \u201cPierre Strong RB South Dakota St \u2013 get to know this name!\u00a0 Strong ran an impressive 4.37.\u00a0 He is rocked up 5\u201911\u201d, 209 lbs, which put up great numbers against FBS 1600 yards and 18 TDs in 2021.\u00a0 Great vision and can catch out of the backfield.\u201d\u00a0 He is the heir apparent to James White.\u00a0 If White can\u2019t go and Strong can pick up the blitz assignments, he could see action earlier than expected.\u00a0 Strong has a good reputation as a willing blocker.\u00a0 I am excited to see what he can do.\u00a0 Strong is 23 years old.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kevin Harris<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My first impression \u2026 Harris\u2019 quads are bigger than some NFL players&#8217; torsos (Tyquan Thornton).\u00a0 I don\u2019t know if anyone saw this selection coming.\u00a0 Harris led the SEC in rushing in 2020 with 1138 yards in 10 games.\u00a0 That\u2019s right he led the SEC, not Najee Harris or Brian Robinson of Alabama or James Cook of Georgia. \u00a0Harris suffered a back injury that required surgery.\u00a0 It was remarkable that Harris played at all in 2021.\u00a0 He played in pain all year.\u00a0 That is why his production dropped.\u00a0 Healthy he is a bull in a china shop.\u00a0 \u00a0Harris stands 5\u201910\u2019\u201d 221 lbs and ran a 4.62 at his Pro Day.\u00a0 He is not a burner but a one cut and-go runner.\u00a0 He may get a red-shirt year this season because of the depth at the RB position.<\/p>\n<p>Matt Miller of NFL Draft Scout wrote prior to the draft, \u201c(My) Favorite Day 3 running back: Kevin Harris from South Carolina. Kind of an old-school, no-nonsense back. Violent inside runner. Never fumbles. One-cut, downhill dude.\u201d \u00a0Justin Frye of the IDP Guys ranked his top three sleepers RBs and had both Strong and Harris listed.\u00a0 \u00a0Harris is just 21, a rarity in this draft.\u00a0 He came out after his junior season.<\/p>\n<p><strong>JJ Taylor <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The forgotten man in the room.\u00a0 The third-year player didn\u2019t do much last year and regressed from his rookie season.\u00a0 With all the competition, is there a place for Taylor?\u00a0 Since Taylor doesn\u2019t play on special teams he will have a hard time making it unless there are injuries.<\/p>\n<p>Evan Lazar wrote for CLNS Media that Taylor had a great catch in mini-camp as Mac Jones was throwing dimes.\u00a0 It was a long pass out of the backfield on a seam route.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mini Camp Notes <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The reports about <strong>Mac Jones<\/strong> have been tremendous.\u00a0 He completed 23 passes in a row as reported by Evan Lazar.\u00a0 He is in great physical shape and is also taking command of the team.\u00a0 He is definitely the leader.\u00a0 Don\u2019t be surprised if Jones is calling his own plays by the end of the season.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Isaiah Wynn<\/strong> was switched over to Right Tackle.\u00a0 This was done despite <strong>Trent Brown<\/strong> being late to the start of practice.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Yodny Cajuste was at Left Tackle until Brown showed up.\u00a0 Speaking of O-lineman, <strong>Cole Strange<\/strong> brought his Logan Mankins traits out at the end of practice, getting into a dustup with <strong>Matt Judon<\/strong>.\u00a0 He took exception to some of the physicality that Judon was playing with. \u00a0\u00a0Reports have the Patriots&#8217; O-line playing more of a zone-blocking scheme.<\/p>\n<p>Former Patriots wizard <strong>Ernie Adams<\/strong> was on the field for mini-camp.\u00a0 <strong>Ivan Fears<\/strong> was also coaching up the Runningbacks. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Fears has not officially retired yet!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dalton Keene<\/strong> has been running with the rookies.\u00a0 Not a good sign.<\/p>\n<p><strong>James Ferentz<\/strong> was used as the number 2 center when <strong>David Andrews<\/strong> took the last 30 minutes of practice off.<\/p>\n<p>No <strong>Kendrick Bourne<\/strong> at practice.\u00a0 Belichick did say a few players had excused absences.\u00a0 Rookie draft picks <strong>Andrew Steuber<\/strong> and <strong>Chasen Hines<\/strong> were among those not at practice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marcus Jones<\/strong> practiced but wore the red no-contact jersey recovering from off-season shoulder surgery.\u00a0 He did not practice Punt Returns but is expected to be the Number 1 PR.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jalen Mills<\/strong> and <strong>Terrance Mitchell<\/strong> were the starting Corners.\u00a0 <strong>Shaun Wade<\/strong> played the # 3 slot corner.\u00a0 Henry McKenna of SI Patriots Wire had <strong>Kyle Dugger<\/strong> and rookie <strong>Jack Jones<\/strong> as some of the more impressive players.<\/p>\n<p>Evan Lazar was impressed with 2<sup>nd<\/sup> year WR <strong>Tre Nixon<\/strong> who caught several passes and in particular a nice post corner route.\u00a0 <strong>Mac Jones<\/strong> was impeccable on his long passes.\u00a0 Nixon got the opportunity because Bourne wasn\u2019t there.\u00a0 <strong>Ty Montgomery<\/strong> was in the #1 slot and performed well.\u00a0 He had no work at the RB position.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Perhaps the strongest position on the team is the Runningback room.\u00a0 The Patriots have two strong RBs in Damien Harris and Rhamondre Stevenson.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":23,"featured_media":41617,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[22766,10],"tags":[2010,22046,78,22997,22990,22588],"class_list":["post-41827","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-2022-patriots-offseason","category-patriots-news","tag-damien-harris","tag-j-j-taylor","tag-james-white","tag-kevin-harris","tag-pierre-strong","tag-rhamondre-stevenson"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v27.5 (Yoast SEO v27.5) -
