With a 12-4 season, there will obviously be plenty of positives, as there should be. But there was lots of room for improvement in lots of areas as well.

But the bottom line is the Patriots won their 13th division title in 15 years. This was supposed to be the year that they were pushed by the Bills and Dolphins and that never materialized. The Jets made great improvements this season but never seriously threatened the Patriots for the division crown.

So here are my final grades by position for the offense, we’ll post up the defense tomorrow and feel free to chime in with your own thoughts. First up the QBs:

Quarterbacks:
Grade: A-

Tom Brady: What can you say about Brady that hasn’t been said countless times. He continues to defy Father Time at age 38 and had a fantastic season. Brady got off to an incredibly hot start that may have been a historic season before injuries to his supporting cast slowed his production down to a fraction of what may have been.

Tom Brady was outstanding in 2015.
(USA TODAY Images)

Regardless, no one reads a defense pre-snap better than him and his movement in the pocket in 2015 has never been better. Brady still has the competitive fire that burns brightly as he’s as committed to football as ever.

Oh and Deflategate? Remember when his detractors said “How will he do with fully inflated footballs?” Well put that one to bed. Brady completed 64.4 percent of his passes, threw for 4770 yards (3rd in the NFL). He led that category for all of the season until Week 17. Had he kept a full or nearly full complement of players around him, 5000 yards was a gimme.

Brady led the NFL in touchdown passes with 36 with only 7 INTs and had a passer rating of 102.2. He also led the league in touchdown to interceptions ratio with 5.1.

Jimmy G. again was relegated to clip board duty this season and no one is complaining. It was a possibility that he would’ve had to start the first four games but that wasn’t the case. He took a few kneel-downs during the year but continued to learn at the foot of one of the greats. Next the RBs:

Running Backs:
Grade: B-

The Patriots running back position was hit hard by injuries this year and the hits started before the regular season even started. James Develin, the versatile fullback who is an outstanding blocker but can run, catch and line up as an H-Back or TE went on IR with a broken leg during the pre-season.

Dion Lewis was electrifying before going down to a season-ending injury.
(USA TODAY Images)

Dion Lewis came out of nowhere and was having an outstanding season catching the ball out of the backfield as well as running before going on IR with a torn ACL. LeGarrette Blount had an impressive summer and won the job as the “big back” in the offense. He also was off to a good season before landing on IR.

Brandon Bolden and Joey Iosefa filled in where needed. Bolden from STs and Iosefa from the PS. Bolden is a core special teams player and is best utilized there but he’s filled in well. The team signed Steven Jackson who has played in two games and has shown signs of shaking off the rust after not playing in a year.

James White has come on for Lewis, and while he doesn’t have the elusiveness of his predecessor, he’s been constantly improving each week and has been very good in the passing game. White had a huge 68-yard reception on Sunday and nearly scored on the play but set up an eventual score by Jackson.

The backs have been hampered in the running game by an offensive line that just hasn’t opened holes for them to run in. Their production in the passing game has been just fine. Their post-season success will depend on the level of play of the offensive line and how well or poor they perform. But they have a good depth level now with Jackson, White, Bolden and Iosefa. Next up the WRs:

Wide Receivers:
Grade: C

The Patriots looked loaded at wide receiver with their top three from 2014 returning in Julian Edelman, Danny Amendola and Brandon LaFell. They also had Aaron Dobson, Chris Harper and the surprising Brandon Gibson during the preseason. Keshawn Martin was added in September as a WR/KR in a trade with New Orleans.

Julian Edelman is expected back for the playoffs, he’s Brady’s most trusted receiver.
(USA TODAY Images)

But LaFell had offseason foot surgery, missed all of the spring and summer and has had little of the impact of a year ago where he had over 1000 yards receiving. His season never took off and he’s been scuffling along with little production and has had major issues with drops all season.

Gibson was lost during the preseason to injury and Dobson had another season cut short by injury and was placed on IR. Both Edelman and Amendola after hot starts to the season both went down, Edelman with a broken foot in Week 9 and Amendola to knee ailments down the stretch.

When Edelman and Amendola were healthy, Brady got the short passing game ignited and was putting up huge numbers. They opened up big chunks of the field elsewhere as did Lewis. In their stead, Martin and LaFell with small cameos by Harper have struggled. They’ve been unable to win against man coverage and the offense has stagnated. That’s why it is imperative for the top two to be healthy and ready to go in the playoffs. Next are the TEs:

Tight Ends:
Grade: A-

Rob Gronkowski remains the gold standard for NFL tight ends. With hats off to guys like Olsen in Carolina and Eifert in Cincy among others, who are fine tight ends, none of them is in the league with Gronkowski. No one faces the kind of coverage he does or gets held, grabbed and interfered with to the limit he does. He’s an outstanding combination of blocker and receiver that provides a matchup nightmare for defenses.

Gronk had another stellar season in 2015.
(USA TODAY Images)

His numbers too went down in the second half as the injuries elsewhere and teams were able to double and at times triple-team him. But he still ended up with big numbers. Gronk tallied 72 catches for 1176 yards for a league best 16.3 ypc among tight ends with 11 touchdowns. Gronkowski also led all TEs in yards per game (78.4), catches of 20+ yards (22), and 40+ yards (5).

The team brought in Scott Chandler this season and after an impressive spring and summer, he’s been a disappointment. We were expecting a ton of the two-TE offense with the big targets but he’s struggled to catch the ball and stay on the field. His 23 catches for 259 yards and four TDs are well below what was expected. He dropped to #3 in the depth chart as Michael Williams took over in a blocking role. Next up is the OL and the coaches:

Offensive Line:
Grade: C-

The Patriots offensive line was facing some tall tasks entering the season. While starting tackles Nate Solder and Sebastian Vollmer were returning, it was inside where they knew there’d be work to do. It began with 2nd year center Bryan Stork starting the year injured and rookie UDFA David Andrews starting in his place.

Tre’ Jackson is one of three rookies to start in the interior OL this season.
(USA TODAY Images)

With injuries/retirement at guard, the team started rookie draft picks Shaq Mason and Tre’ Jackson with three rookies in the interior of the offensive line. The season started well enough; Brady was on fire, getting rid of the ball in less than two seconds and the quick receivers were torching teams.

But as the injuries to both the receivers and OL continued, the real struggles began. Solder was lost to IR and the offensive line has been a revolving door. They’ve had 13 different combinations and 10 different starting combinations. Brady has had five different left tackles this season. Vollmer was hurt but is expected back for the playoff game on Jan. 16th.

Marcus Cannon, Cameron Fleming, Josh Kline, Stork, LaAdrian Waddle have all played and all been hurt at one time or another. But the myriad of injuries and subpar play mixed with the inexperience have hurt. The run blocking has been poor all season and the pass protection for Brady has really struggled down the stretch.

This unit has to turn it around and pick-up their level of play in the playoffs or it will be a short run for the team. Brady needs much more time to find his receivers. Getting Vollmer back will help but it won’t fix everything.

Coaching:
Grade: A-

Josh McDaniels had an outstanding year, which is why he’s at the top of many of the vacant head coaching lists. He was very creative, especially at the beginning of the season when the team was more or less healthy and the offense was nearly unstoppable. He and Brady have worked together for a long time and are in lock step when it comes to running the offense.

Josh McDaniels is having another strong season as the Offensive Coordinator and is a leading candidate for many head coaching vacancies.
(USA TODAY Images)

The assistant coaches, among them Brian Daboll, Dave DeGuglielmo, Ivan Fears, Chad O’Shea and others have done a bang-up job of doing the best they can with a seemingly new cast of characters each week.
