Patriots Draft Needs <\/strong><\/p>\n

Now that the Free Agent Frenzy has subsided and most teams have filled their needs or at least exhausted their budget, we can look at the needs that remain and could be filled by the draft.<\/p>\n

In my opinion, the Patriots’ needs are prioritized as follows:<\/p>\n

CB<\/p>\n

NT<\/p>\n

LB<\/p>\n

OT<\/p>\n

OG<\/p>\n

WR<\/p>\n

Why CB<\/strong> \u2013 just look at the two lopsided Bills games.\u00a0 It’s not all the DBs fault.\u00a0 The lack of a pass rush and ability to contain Josh Allen put tremendous pressure on the secondary and they folded.\u00a0 We have no idea what we are going to get from Malcolm Butler.\u00a0 Terrance Mitchell should only be a veteran backup.\u00a0 I am not sold on Jalen Mills.\u00a0 Having Jonathan Jones back will help. \u00a0None of these players are a CB 1 that can shut down the top receiver of the opponent.<\/p>\n

Why NT<\/strong> \u2013 The Patriots got run over last year. \u00a0They need someone that can stuff the run.\u00a0 Davon Godchaux didn\u2019t provide that.\u00a0 Carl Davis was allowed to become an Unrestricted Free Agent and hasn\u2019t had a sniff at a contract even at the vet minimum.\u00a0 On the roster, you have Dan Ekuale and Bill Murray.\u00a0 I like Ekuale\u2019s effort but they don\u2019t exactly strike fear in the opponents.\u00a0 Murray is a try-hard undersized DT.<\/p>\n

Why LB<\/strong> \u2013 The Patriots lack speed at LB.\u00a0 Donta Hightower, Jaime Collins, and Brandon King are Free Agents and Kyle Van Noy was let go.\u00a0 None have hooked on with another team, not even at Vet Minimum.\u00a0 That\u2019s how slow they were last year.\u00a0 They might even draft two linebackers.\u00a0 I am not impressed with the players they have on the roster at LB.\u00a0 They obtained Mack Wilson in an exchange for Chase Winovich, a player that did not develop.\u00a0 Raekwon McMillan had a good camp last year until a knee injury felled him for the season.\u00a0 You don\u2019t know if he can come back or if he has anything left in the tank.\u00a0 Ja’Whaun Bentley is a thumper but is only a two-down player.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0He can\u2019t cover anyone downfield.\u00a0 The Pats need speed at the LB spot and there are plenty of good LBs available in the draft.\u00a0 Have we seen anything from Aferneee Jennings?<\/p>\n

Why OT<\/strong> \u2013 Wynn is entering his Free Agent year and Trent Brown has become injury prone the last three years.\u00a0 Finding a starting caliber OT late in the draft is not impossible but can be difficult.\u00a0 This player doesn\u2019t need to start right away and can use the season to get up to NFL caliber as far as technique and functional strength goes.<\/p>\n

Why OG<\/strong> \u2013 This is an immediate need as they do not have a starting Left Guard on the roster.\u00a0 It is much easier finding an OG late in the draft.\u00a0 That\u2019s why it\u2019s not as high a priority.\u00a0 You can take undersized LTs and convert them to LG.\u00a0 Logan Mankins is a perfect example.<\/p>\n

Why WR<\/strong> \u2013 I know they just signed DeVante Parker but he is just like the receivers they already have.\u00a0 He is a possession receiver.\u00a0 The big difference with Parker is that he wins those 50\/50 balls.\u00a0 The bad part of Parker is that he has so many 50\/50 balls because he can\u2019t separate.\u00a0 They need speed at the slot position and someone that can return punts.<\/p>\n

Belichick usually drafts the best player available.\u00a0 They don\u2019t have that luxury this year with so many holes in the team and no available money under the Salary Cap to fix all the problems.\u00a0 I said it last year when they were setting their roster, they had too many players over 30 on the team.<\/p>\n

Top 30 Visits<\/strong><\/p>\n

Each team is allowed to bring in 30 players for interviews, workouts, or medical evaluation.\u00a0 Some player\u2019s agents have let it be known their players have received an invite by the Patriots.\u00a0 This doesn\u2019t mean the Patriots will draft these players.\u00a0 Sometimes they are smokescreens hiding the identity of a player they are interested in.<\/p>\n

So far the following players have indicated they have a received an invite from the Patriots:<\/p>\n

Andrew Booth, CB, Clemson<\/p>\n

Jack Jones, CB, Arizona St<\/p>\n

Trent McDuffie, CB, Washington<\/p>\n

Chase Lucas, CB, Arizona St<\/p>\n

Darien Butler, LB, Arizona St<\/p>\n

Trevor Penning,OT, Northern Iowa<\/p>\n

Marcus Jones, CB, Houston<\/p>\n

Keyon Green, OG, Texas A&M<\/p>\n

Zion Johnson, OG, Boston College<\/p>\n

Patriots Hall of Fame semi-finalists <\/strong><\/p>\n

Julius Adams<\/p>\n

Chuck Fairbanks<\/p>\n

Lawyer Milloy<\/p>\n

Logan Mankins<\/p>\n

Mike Vrabel<\/p>\n

John Smith<\/p>\n

Wes Welker<\/p>\n

Bill Parcells<\/p>\n

Vince Wilfork<\/p>\n

These nine will be whittled down to 3 finalists.\u00a0 The fan vote will determine who is selected.<\/p>\n

Fairbanks and Parcells will be eliminated because of the way they left the team.\u00a0 John Smith, a good, not great player for the team, won\u2019t make it because he is a kicker.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 That leaves 6 quality players and any one of them could be selected and nobody would question it.\u00a0 It then becomes a popularity contest.\u00a0 Julius Adams is going to have a hard time beating out any of the modern Patriots that played under Belichick.<\/p>\n

Vrabel may not get the nomination because he is a coach for another team.\u00a0 My three finalists would be Milloy, Mankins, and Welker.\u00a0 I am not including Wilfork because he would win the popular vote whenever he is nominated.<\/p>\n

Sad Passing of Steelers QB Dwayne Haskins <\/strong><\/p>\n

The death of 24-year-old Steelers QB Dwayne Haskins is both tragic and bizarre. \u00a0\u00a0Haskins was hit and killed by a dump truck while walking on I-595 westbound, an interstate highway in Ft. Lauderdale Florida at 7 AM.\u00a0 \u00a0It is believed that low visibility due to sunrise may have been a factor.\u00a0 \u00a0 Haskins for some reason tried to cross the multi-lane highway.\u00a0 It is always tragic whenever a young person dies at such a young age.\u00a0 This has nothing to do with the color of his skin or the success or failure the young man has had as an athlete.\u00a0 My condolences go out to his family, friends, and fans.<\/p>\n

Happy Birthday Bill Belichick <\/strong><\/p>\n
