The Senior Bowl has concluded, the Super Bowl is Sunday, and Free Agency is on the horizon.\u00a0 Free Agency starts March 16th, with the previous two days as what’s called “Legal Tampering”.\u00a0 The NFL Draft Combine from Indianapolis is the first week of March.\u00a0 Let\u2019s wrap up the Senior Bowl with the 10 players I think helped themselves the most in Mobile.<\/p>\n

I think this is a general consensus of who the top players were from various sources such as Pro Football Focus, Pro Football Network, and NFL Draft Scout.\u00a0 We may have one or two players we disagree on.<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Dameon Pierce RB Florida<\/strong> \u2013 Pierce came into the week with a lot to prove.\u00a0 He had a subpar season at Florida.\u00a0 He ran for 574 yards on only 100 carries for 5.7 YPC and 13 TDs.\u00a0 Why did he get so few carries?\u00a0\u00a0 Not his fault, Florida trailed a lot and had to pass.\u00a0 Pierce is solid at 5\u2019 10\u201d 215 lbs and runs hard, makes decisive cuts, and is tough to bring down.\u00a0 His biggest assets are his pass blocking and receiving skills.\u00a0 He had 19 catches for 216 yards and 11.4 YPC, 3 more TDs.\u00a0 He was the only RB at the Senior Bowl that was able to stone LBs in pass rush drills.<\/li>\n
  2. Christian Watson WR North Dakota St<\/strong> \u2013 You heard his name all week from various scouts. He was unstoppable and beat every cornerback.\u00a0 He is a big receiver at 6\u20194? \u00a0211lbs, \u00a0Wingspan: 77 1\/8? Arm: 32 3\/4? Hand: 10?. \u00a0\u00a0Speed is supposed to be sub 4.5, which will be confirmed at the combine.\u00a0 He made a smart, heads-up play on a ball thrown low.\u00a0 He went down and caught it, rolling on the ground.\u00a0 The defender ran right by like they were playing college rules.\u00a0 Watson got right up and gained another 20 yards downfield.\u00a0 He also should have had a TD catch if the QB could get him the ball (the QBs were awful).\u00a0 He came from FCS North Dakota St and had a lot to prove and he did that.<\/li>\n
  3. Trevor Penning OT Northern Iowa<\/strong> \u2013 Overall the O-line play all week was terrible. Many of the big tackles got eaten up by the D Line and edge pass rushers got a lot of accolades for the number of pass rushers he put on the ground.\u00a0 Penning is just plain old nasty on every rep.\u00a0 As one scout put it, \u201cHe wants to start a fight on every play\u201d.\u00a0 There is one thing to play to the whistle, but Penning was going beyond on every rep.\u00a0 Penning stands 6\u20197\u201d 330 lbs and did get beat on some reps, but recovered and planted the edge rusher in the ground.\u00a0 He made money this week and should go in the top 20.<\/li>\n
  4. Malik Willis QB Liberty<\/strong> \u2013 This was a big week for Willis. He played up with the big boys after playing his career at Liberty University.\u00a0 Willis is 6\u2019 1\u201d 215 lbs and runs a 4.42 40.\u00a0 He might be a better runningback than a thrower.\u00a0 Well, that statement was disproved by Willis’s strong performance this week.\u00a0 Willis played very well in the rain on Day 2 of practice.\u00a0 His arm strength was terrific as he cut the ball through the wind and rain. \u00a0Pittsburgh Head Coach was all over Willis all week.\u00a0 Anywhere Willis went, Tomlin was right behind him. \u00a0In the game, Wilis was just ok, but that one day of practice made the difference.\u00a0 The remainder of the QBs were just average to me.<\/li>\n
  5. Trey McBride TE Colorado St<\/strong> \u2013 He was uncoverable all week. However, this is a deep TE class and you can find a good NFL level TE in the 5th<\/sup>\u00a0 I am looking at 4 TE\u2019s going in the top 100.<\/li>\n
  6. Tariq Castro-Fields CB Penn St – This was a plug from Pro Football Focus because Castro-Fields was getting accolades from coaches all week. No other CB was getting that kind of input from the coaches.\u00a0 \u00a0I had Castro-Fields as a late Day three player that would interest the Patriots.\u00a0 He made some money and worked up into the 4th<\/sup> or 5th<\/sup>\u00a0 Castro-Fields is 6\u2019 194 and runs a 4.43.\u00a0 That\u2019s good size and speed.\u00a0 He has played at a high level (Big Ten) against good consistent talent.<\/li>\n
  7. DeVonte Wyatt DT Georgia<\/strong> \u2013 He played great in the practices all week and was named a practice player of the week by his peers. He did not play in the game itself due to a slight injury.\u00a0 The game MVP went to Perrion Winfrey DT Oklahoma.\u00a0 He had a great game and a very good week of practice, nothing wrong with him, but DeVonte Wyatt was absolutely unstoppable.\u00a0 I would love to see him added to the Patriots roster.<\/li>\n
  8. Boye Mafe EDGE Minnesota<\/strong> \u2013 he had two sacks, one a strip-sack, and was outstanding all game. His week of practice was just as good.\u00a0 At 6\u20194\u201d 260 lbs, he runs a 4.57\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0He was quick all week with his pass rush.\u00a0\u00a0 Mafe could be a Patriots type of player.\u00a0 This may also be the deepest position in the draft.<\/li>\n
  9. Darrion Beavers LB Cincinnati<\/strong> \u2013 The knock on Beavers was that he couldn\u2019t cover. Well, that was disproved this week.\u00a0 Beavers stayed with both TEs and RBs.\u00a0 At 6\u20194\u201d, 252 he ran an estimated 4.78.\u00a0 He appeared faster than his game tape showed.\u00a0 Let’s see what he puts up for numbers at the combine.\u00a0 He played the run great and has throughout his career but coverage was the issue.\u00a0 Jermaine Johnson had a great week too but I think Beavers is the one that improved his draft position the most.<\/li>\n
  10. Jalen Pitre S Baylor<\/strong> \u2013 Pitre was all over the field. He played both slot corner and Strong Safety at Baylor.\u00a0 He will make a terrific Free Safety and something the Patriots need.\u00a0 At 5\u201911\u201d 196 lbs, he is not the biggest safety, but he can run with the WRs.\u00a0 \u00a0He is a hybrid DB, playing in the box and having the flexibility to play FS.\u00a0 He showed these skills all week and was heads above all other safeties.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    I have to give a shout-out to Jordan Stout P Penn State.\u00a0 I had him as a player to watch and he didn\u2019t disappoint in the game.\u00a0 He averaged 49.5 per punt in the game with 2 punts inside the 20.\u00a0 Also, the conditions weren\u2019t great with 20 MPH winds and a game wind chill of 32 degrees (very cold for Mobile).\u00a0 Stout played at Penn St and he is ideal for playing in the NE.\u00a0 He also kicks off and had a kickoff that traveled 85 yards through the goalposts and into the tunnel by several yards.<\/p>\n

    Next week I will have a new Mock Draft post-Senior Bowl and I will be using the rankings of Patriots-type Plyers generated by poster Bacon Grundle Candy.\u00a0 This is a fun exercise as BGC has these players ranked by what round they should be picked.<\/p>\n

    EXTRA MORSELS:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    – Pro Football Talk\u2019s Mike Florio\u2019s book Playmakers has two interesting points we all suspected about Deflategate.\u00a0 One, that Try Vincent was the disinformation leak from the NFL Office that told ESPN\u2019s Chris Mortenson that 11 of 12 footballs were 2lbs under-inflated.\u00a0\u00a0 With a credible source such as the assistant commissioner, Mortenson went with the story.\u00a0 The second point is that NFL Counsel Jeff Pash ordered the destruction of ball testing data accumulated data from the 2015 season because closely replicated the numbers taken at halftime of the Patriots playoff game the season before.\u00a0 That data, if made public would have exonerated the Patriots and Tom Brady.\u00a0 I believe it\u2019s time for the Patriots and Bob Kraft to demand their draft choices to be returned and any fines are returned.\u00a0 This is beautiful seeing that it\u2019s the week of the Super Bowl when it comes up, the week of the most media attention.\u00a0 This also the same week the Deflategate story broke and Tom Brady gad to answer all those questions at the Super Bowl.<\/p>\n

    – The addition of Joe Judge to the coaching staff is a welcomed signing.\u00a0 The title will be Offensive Assistant with various undefined duties.\u00a0 I hope this does not preclude the Patriots from bringing back Bill O\u2019Brien as Offensive Coordinator.\u00a0 Chris Gaspar is reporting that the Judge hiring will mean no Offensive Coordinator and those duties spread amongst the offensive coaches.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0I for one was not pleased with Cam Achord\u2019s leadership of Special Teams and was hoping Judge would return to coach ST\u2019s.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
