This is a review of my roster predictions, plusses, and minuses while providing some roster analysis.\u00a0 I have added a Special Teams designation (ST) next to the core Special Teams players but listed them with the position they could play if needed.\u00a0 The Practice Squad is unofficially forming and I report on those up until I submit the article.\u00a0 I also highlight some new players to the Patriots roster.<\/p>\n

Quarterbacks (1)<\/strong> (++) (-)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mac Jones<\/p>\n

PUP:\u00a0Jarrett Stidham (Minimum of 6 weeks)<\/p>\n

Cut:\u00a0Cam Newton,\u00a0Brian Hoyer<\/p>\n

The release of Cam Newton was a shocker.\u00a0 I believe, as I wrote last week the COVID protocol misunderstanding last week was the deciding factor in choosing Jones as the starter.\u00a0 Reports are circulating that some inside the organization were seething over the missed time by Newton.\u00a0 The door was opened and Jones came rushing through with an outstanding practice against the Giants starters.\u00a0 He also had an outstanding camp, grasping everything the coaching staff threw at him. \u00a0He was 8 for 14 on drives that led to scores or opportunities for scores in the Pre-season.\u00a0 Pro Football Focus had Jones with the highest rookie QB ratings at 92.2.\u00a0 He was 36 of 52, 1 TD, no interceptions, and no fumbles.\u00a0 Overall passer rating of 97.3.\u00a0 He did have 5 sacks but two of those were against the Giants starting D while he had the backup offensive line, and another was the final play of the half where he chose to eat the ball rather than throw it up for a possible Interception.\u00a0 He admitted after the game that he held onto the ball a little too long.\u00a0 The Giants did him a big favor by trying some exotic blitzes.<\/p>\n

Brian Hoyer was as I predicted correctly cut, but that came as a surprise when Cam Newton was also cut.\u00a0 Hoyer was supposed to be back on the roster when Harry is put on recall IR (minimum 3 weeks).\u00a0 However, that changed when the Patriots were awarded WR\/RB\/QB Malcolm Perry on waivers from Miami.\u00a0 Hoyer was signed to the Practice Squad.\u00a0 That will only be temporary.\u00a0 Perry right now is the backup QB!<\/p>\n

Running backs (5)<\/strong> (-)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Damien Harris,\u00a0James White,\u00a0Rhamondre Stevenson, J.J. Taylor (ST),\u00a0Brandon Bolden (ST)<\/p>\n

Cut: None<\/p>\n

I was surprised that Brandon Bolden wasn\u2019t cut and brought back on Wednesday to hold a spot for another player (Jennings) to go on short-term IR.\u00a0 However, Greg Bedard of Boston Sports Journal was a guest on Sports hub 98.5 the Felger and Mazz show today and he alluded that Bolden was hurt.\u00a0 Bolden did not play in any pre-season games.\u00a0 Could he be an IR candidate?<\/p>\n

Fullbacks (1)<\/strong> (-)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jakob Johnson (ST)<\/p>\n

Cut: None<\/p>\n

Johnson was another player I did not have on my list.\u00a0 My thinking was that the new 2 TE sets would require 4 TEs on the roster.\u00a0 Also, not many teams employ a Fullback anymore so the chances of Johnson getting through waivers and onto the Practice Squad was high.<\/p>\n

Wide receivers (6)<\/strong> (-) (+)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jakobi Meyers, Kendrick Bourne, Nelson Agholor,\u00a0\u00a0Gunner Olszewski (ST), Matthew Slater (ST), Malcolm Perry<\/strong><\/p>\n

IR: Marvin Hall, N\u2019Keal Harry(s)<\/p>\n

Cut:\u00a0Tre Nixon,\u00a0Kristian Wilkerson,\u00a0Isaiah Zuber<\/p>\n

The first three will play the majority of snaps.\u00a0 Gunner Olszewski was omitted from my projection because of his drops.\u00a0 Harry will go on short-term IR on Wednesday and be able to come off in 3 weeks.\u00a0 Don\u2019t be surprised if another player is claimed.\u00a0 Olszewski’s position is not secure.\u00a0 WR\/RB\/QB Malcolm Perry <\/strong>from Navy was awarded to the Patriots.\u00a0 Perry had 304 yards vs Army in 2019 and followed that up with 213 vs Kansas in the Liberty Bowl.\u00a0 Perry holds the single-season FBS rushing title of 2,017 yards.\u00a0 This pre-season he was targeted 8 times with 6 catches.<\/p>\n

Tight ends (3)<\/strong> (-)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jonnu Smith,\u00a0Hunter Henry,\u00a0Devin Asiasi<\/p>\n

IR: Dalton Keene,\u00a0Troy Fumagalli<\/p>\n

Cut: Matt LaCosse<\/p>\n

Surprised LaCosse didn\u2019t make it.\u00a0 He was going to be the starter at TE before opting out for COVID.\u00a0 He was hurt in the Philly scrimmage by a cheap shot by Defensive End Derek Barnett which led to a concussion.\u00a0\u00a0 By the way, that throw and injury were all on Cam Newton.\u00a0 He led LaCosse right into Barnett.\u00a0 Don\u2019t be surprised if LaCosse makes his way back onto the roster at some point this season.\u00a0 Basically, it\u2019s a trade of Johnson for LaCosse.<\/p>\n

Isaiah Wynn,\u00a0Mike Onwenu,\u00a0David Andrews,\u00a0Shaq Mason,\u00a0Trent Brown,\u00a0Justin Herron,\u00a0Ted Karras,\u00a0Yodny Cajuste,\u00a0Yasir Durant<\/strong><\/p>\n

Injured reserve: Marcus Martin<\/p>\n

Cut:\u00a0Will Sherman,\u00a0Alex Redmond,\u00a0James Ferentz,\u00a0Korey Cunningham<\/p>\n

The offensive line is a strength of this team and running the ball (while protecting the rookie QB) will be a priority.\u00a0 The starters are a Top 5 unit.\u00a0 Ted Karras was a starter and Captain for Miami last year.\u00a0 I bet they wish they had him back. Yodny Cajuste quietly had a great Pre-season and emerged as the player he was expected to be when drafted.\u00a0 It is a great story that he was drafted hurt, sat out his 1st<\/sup> year, got hurt again in year two pre-season, and sat out the 2nd<\/sup> year.\u00a0 Justin Herron is a fine swing tackle.\u00a0 I predicted nine (9) O linemen but didn\u2019t see the trade coming for Yasir Durant<\/strong>.\u00a0 The OG had 33 starts for Missouri at LT in the SEC.\u00a0 He is big, at 6\u20196\u201d, 330 lbs, for a Guard.\u00a0 He played one game for KC Chiefs at RT and didn\u2019t play well.\u00a0 He gave up a sack and a couple of pressures.\u00a0 In fairness, he is an RG, not a tackle. \u00a0Alex Redmond was cut but has been re-signed to the Practice Squad.<\/p>\n

The Patriots could have used Brandon King as one of those temporary cuts to get to 53.\u00a0 I am surprised they didn\u2019t.\u00a0 Anfernee Jenning must be hurt a lot more than anyone is letting on, to go on the IR for the season.\u00a0 If Jennings had any chance to come back this year, they could have cut King with the wink and a nod, then bring him the next day when they add Jennings to IR. \u00a0I also didn\u2019t have Langi making the cut.<\/p>\n

Cornerbacks (6)<\/strong> (- – – -)<\/strong><\/p>\n

J.C. Jackson, Jon Jones,\u00a0Jalen Mills,\u00a0Justin Bethel,\u00a0Shaun Wade,\u00a0Joejuan Williams<\/p>\n

Cut: D\u2019Angelo Ross, Michael Jackson, Dee Virgin<\/p>\n

I think they are a little thin here in the secondary with Gilmore going on IR for 6 weeks.<\/p>\n

Thought it was the end of the line for Williams.\u00a0 Gilmore out for 6 weeks (minimum) hurts.\u00a0 I had Ross making the team.\u00a0 Glad to see he is on the Practice Squad.\u00a0 Dee Virgin has signed with SF PS.<\/p>\n

A little thin here too!\u00a0 However, both Mills, Williams, and Davis can play Safety.\u00a0 Davis was a terrific college Safety for Texas Tech.\u00a0 He started as a true freshman and played in 49 games over 4 seasons.\u00a0 He wracked up 362 tackles with 101 coming in his senior season.<\/p>\n

Both Bryant and Colbert have been signed to the PS.<\/p>\n

Specialists (3) (- )<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kicker\u00a0Quinn Nordin, punter\u00a0Jake Bailey, long snapper\u00a0Joe Cardona (-)<\/p>\n

Cut: Kicker\u00a0Nick Folk<\/p>\n

No question Nordin has a big leg.\u00a0 However, I never expected the Patriots to keep the streak alive for the 18th<\/sup> consecutive season by keeping an UnDrafted Free Agent on the 53 man roster.\u00a0 Nordin was the only UDFA on the roster and he was far too inconsistent.<\/p>\n

Greg Bedard had an interesting observation on Felger and Mazz that Folk looked a little \u201cdoughy\u201d and not in good shape.\u00a0 He compared him to former Raiders kicker Sebastian Janikowski, late in his career.\u00a0 Folk already had a bad back and that wasn\u2019t going to get much better for a player that will turn 37 in November.\u00a0 Folk had the guaranteed money whether or not he made the team.<\/p>\n

Mason was a 5th<\/sup> Rd pick (184 overall) (BAL) FB Michigan \u2013 He has Patriots written all over him.\u00a0 One of my Draft Binkies this year and a player I selected in almost every mock draft I did.\u00a0 He blew up players in the Senior Bowl practices.\u00a0 Special Teams beast and can play some TE or ILB.\u00a0 He is 6\u2019 2.6\u201d, 246 lbs runs 4.77, ran a spectacular 6.89 3-cone, 37 \u00bd Vertical, and is strong benching 29 reps at 225#.\u00a0 His mother has ties to West Roxbury.\u00a0 His size\/speed numbers would have been #3 for ILBs.\u00a0 He hits like a train.\u00a0 I have heard that Mason will be elevated quickly to the 53 man roster.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
