The recent re-signings of both James White and Lawrence Guy were not only excellent moves in bringing back very good veteran players, but they were both done on very team-friendly deals. The total cap hit for both players in 2021 is less than $3 million.

Earlier, we pegged White as good as gone, believing he’d opt for one of the Florida teams, getting closer to home after the tragic car accident involving his parents last year. But he returned in a very modest deal.

White’s one-year contract, despite what some on talk-sports radio will say, is well worth it. He will receive a total salary of $2.325 million dollars. Due to a new provision in the Collective Bargaining Agreement, it is considered as a so-called Four-Year Player Qualifying Contract. This was introduced as a means to help veteran players be signed to rosters. So, only $1.075 million of White’s salary actually is counted against the Patriots’ cap. As well as his signing bonus of $137,500. Therefore, his salary cap number this year is only $1.213 million.

Guy’s contract is four years for a maximum value of $24 million with bonuses but is essentially a 4-year, $11.5 million deal. Guy’s cap hits in 2021 is just $1.75 million with cap hits of $3.25 million for each year of the final three. Which is very affordable.

Niners Trade Throws A Difficult Factor in NE Draft Plans:

The Forty-Niners and Dolphins worked out a mega-deal trade on Friday that will affect the remainder of the pre-draft wheeling and dealing for teams, including the Patriots that wish to move up in the draft, ostensibly to select one of the top QBs this year.

The Niners gave up their 1st-round pick (#12) in the 2021 draft, plus their 1st and 3rd round picks in 2022, and a 1st-round pick in 2023 to Miami to move up just nine spots from #12 to the Dolphins #3. Miami then jumped back into the top ten with a deal trading the #12 pick to the Eagles along with a 2022 1st-round pick for #6.

By jumping into the draft fray, SF has joined the teams looking for a QB, and the price they paid, it is now believed that Jacksonville, Jets, and SF will select either Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson, Justin Fields, Trey Lance, or Mac Jones with the first three selections. However, with Carolina, Detroit, Denver, and New England in the mix, there are more spots than QBs.

That makes Atlanta’s pick at #4 much more valuable. And the Falcons will be looking for a similar haul, and the Patriots currently at #15, are going to have to move up even more than the Niners. Another option would be Cincinnati at #5. They selected Joe Burrow last year and would probably love to get some additional capital to build around him. Moving back a bit, if the pot is sweetened enough, might just do the trick.

In regards to QB trades, as soon as the Niners trade took effect, the rumor mill around Jimmy G. went absolutely haywire. That would seem foolhardy…and bad business.

Greg Bedard of BSJ believes that Jacksonville will trade QB Gardner Minshew after they signed QB C.J. Seems like a lot of things have to fall into place.

Of course, the other Minshew option is that the Patriots trade for him straight up. That wouldn’t be a favored option here, but we’ve already been down that path.
