Tuesday February 23, 2021 was the 1st<\/sup> day teams can start Franchise tagging their own Free Agents.\u00a0 The most likely Franchise tag recipient would be Bears WR Allen Robinson.\u00a0 Many Pats fans have Robinson at the top of their list of Unrestricted Free Agents they hope the Patriots sign. \u00a0He is one of my favorite players in the league.\u00a0 Don\u2019t keep your hopes up.\u00a0 Robinson could be tagged before this article is posted.<\/p>\n

Another Pats fan favorite is Tampa Bay WR, Chris Godwin. Bruce Arians said at the Championship rally that we are bringing everyone back.\u00a0 Fat chance of that.\u00a0 He also has Shaq Barrett and Lavonte David as Free Agents.\u00a0 Godwin is the ideal Free Agent at 24 years-old.\u00a0 David, on the other hand, is already 31.<\/p>\n

The third WR most people talk about is Lions WR Kenny Golladay. He was one of the best WRs in the league before his disastrous 2020 season.\u00a0 Golladay is 27, and Detroit also has their top Receiver Marvin Jones (31) as a UFA.\u00a0 Jones is rumored to be going to LA Rams with Stafford.\u00a0 I think Golladay gets Franchised.<\/p>\n

Dallas QB Dak Prescott is a Free Agent, but I don\u2019t see the Cowboys letting him go anywhere.\u00a0 I think he gets franchised while they try and work out a long-term contract.<\/p>\n

On the defensive side, former BC Safety Justin Simmons would be a likely signee.\u00a0 However, it’s expected that Simmons will be tagged for the second year.<\/p>\n

This brings me to the Patriots Joe Thuney.\u00a0 I for one agreed with the Patriots tagging him last year.\u00a0 He was the kind of player you build your offensive line around.\u00a0 Solid player that never comes out of the lineup.\u00a0 He proved he could play multiple positions last year.\u00a0 The thought was to tag him and negotiate a long-term deal.\u00a0 Thuney and his agent, Mike McCarty, crossed up the Pats and immediately signed his tag and wouldn\u2019t budge in negotiations.\u00a0 Did that strategy backfire?\u00a0 It put the Pats in a huge bind without the cap space and without a quarterback.\u00a0 Thuney is free again this year, in a year when the salary cap is low ($180.5M).\u00a0 He is also a year older at 27.\u00a0 I don\u2019t see the Pats tagging him again and I believe he’ll sign with another team.\u00a0 We would then receive a 3rd<\/sup> round comp pick (maybe).\u00a0 If we sign a player with a similar contract value then we wouldn\u2019t get a comp pick.\u00a0 I think he is as good as gone.<\/p>\n

Players to target in Free Agency\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n

Obviously WR is an issue and a priority to fill with a couple of players.\u00a0 The number one player I would go after is Will Fuller from Houston. At 6\u2019 184 lbs he is an X receiver.\u00a0 He is just 26 yo and has blinding vertical speed.\u00a0 Fuller averaged 16.6 yards per catch on his 53 catches for 879 yards and 8 TDs in 11 games.<\/p>\n

Another young WR available is Carolina\u2019s Curtis Samuel (24).\u00a0 At 5\u2019 11\u201d 195 lbs he is solid slot receiver that can play outside as well.\u00a0 His stat line for 2020 read 77 catches, 851 yards, 11.1 per catch with 3 TD\u2019s.\u00a0 He is a former 2nd<\/sup> rd pick from Ohio St.<\/p>\n

Next on the priority list is DT Leonard Williams from the Giants.\u00a0 He is the former 1st<\/sup> round pick by the Jets who didn\u2019t pan out.\u00a0 Williams blossomed last year with the Giants.\u00a0 Big Cat had 11.5 sacks and 29 tackles from his 3-4 end position.\u00a0 At 6\u20193\u201d 305 he is also a space eater that allows the LBs to make tackles.<\/p>\n

If you are worried that Williams was flash in the pan last year as his contract year, then another player from the Giants should appeal.\u00a0 Dalvin Tomlinson, NT from the Giants was very consistent and durable the last two seasons.\u00a0 At 6\u20193\u201d 318 he put up 3.5 sacks and 49 tackles each of the last two seasons.<\/p>\n

A second former BC Safety, John Johnson II from the LA Rams is a young Free Agent (25). \u00a0\u00a0He would add an eventual replacement for Devin McCourty at FS who is not getting younger.\u00a0\u00a0 Johnson is a young veteran that can play either FS or SS.\u00a0 The Patriots have Patrick Chung coming back from opting out, and the 2nd<\/sup> year development of Kyle Dugger, \u00a0which will give the Patriots an elite secondary unit.<\/p>\n

A third option at WR would be Corey Davis (26) from Tennessee.\u00a0 At 6\u2019 3\u201d 209 lbs he is big wideout coming off a season with 65 catches for 984 yds and 5 TD\u2019s.\u00a0 That was an average of 15. Yards per reception.<\/p>\n

Jayon Brown (25) a 3-4 ILB from Tennessee is another under the radar signing that would make a big difference over the next 4 years.\u00a0 Brown is 6\u2019 226 lbs and has the speed and instinct to cover RB\u2019s and TE\u2019s all over the field.\u00a0 He is #1 ranked LB in covering RB\/TE\u2019s over the last two years.\u00a0 He ran a 4.7 40 coming out of college.\u00a0 Over the past 4 years he has 329 tackles.\u00a0 In 2020 he had 72 in 10 games.<\/p>\n

The third member of the Titan is TE Jonnu Smith.\u00a0 Smith is an accomplished receiver and a capable blocker.\u00a0 I think he would be a better fit than Hunter Henry.\u00a0 He is 25 yo with a stat line of 41 catches, 448 yds, 8 TD\u2019s and a 10.9 yards per catch.\u00a0 At 6\u20193\u201d 248lbs he is a good inline blocker.\u00a0 There will be much competition for his services.\u00a0 If the Patriots want him, they have the money to outbid teams.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
