{"id":33163,"date":"2020-11-10T21:45:49","date_gmt":"2020-11-11T02:45:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/?p=33163"},"modified":"2020-11-10T21:45:49","modified_gmt":"2020-11-11T02:45:49","slug":"bill-belichick-reflects-back-on-jets-hc-resignation-one-of-the-greatest-moments-of-my-career","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/2020\/11\/10\/bill-belichick-reflects-back-on-jets-hc-resignation-one-of-the-greatest-moments-of-my-career\/","title":{"rendered":"Bill Belichick Reflects Back On Jets HC Resignation, &#8220;One Of The Greatest Moments Of My Career&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\" title=\"New England Patriots at PatsFans.com\"><strong>New England Patriots<\/strong><\/a> took on the New York Jets Monday night, the ESPN &#8220;Monday Night Football&#8221; telecast discussed Bill Belichick&#8217;s resignation from &#8220;gang green&#8221; 20 years earlier in January 2000.<\/p>\n<p>For backstory, at the time, Belichick was expected to take over as Jets head coach from Bill Parcell&#8217;s, rising from defensive coordinator.<\/p>\n<p>However, Belichick&#8217;s confidence in the Jets franchise began to deteriorate when then-owner Leon Hess passed away before the 1999 season.<\/p>\n<p>With the situation at owner unknown heading into the new millennium, Belichick began to express his doubts towards the new candidates in Woody Johnson and Charles Dolan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEssentially the problem I had with the whole arrangement eventually was when all of this transpired there was no owner,\u201d Belichick\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/05\/29\/bill-belichick-jets-dynasty-that-wasnt-came-down-to-control\/\">said in ESPN\u2019s \u201cThe Two Bills.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0\u201cMr. Hess passed away before the \u201999 season. There were two potential owners and that was [Woody] Johnson and [Charles] Dolan. I hadn\u2019t spoken with either one, but I had issues with both, and it wasn\u2019t Mr. Hess anymore, which was the original agreement or the original context we talked about. That whole ownership configuration at that point in time was a major factor in my decision much more than a personal relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So not even 24 hours after accepting the Jets job, Belichick went before the New York media and announced his stunning resignation by way of a napkin that simply read \u201cI resign as HC of the NYJ&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bill Belichick&#039;s Historic Jets Departure Press Conference | NFL Throwback\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AkcKAPdNbto?start=49&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Robert Kraft and the Patriots would later acquire Belichick in a trade involving a first round draft pick as compensation.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking with WEEI&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radio.com\/weei\/sports\/patriots\/belichick-resigning-from-jets-a-great-moment-in-my-career\">\u201cOrdway, Merloni and Fauria\u201d<\/a> on Tuesday, Belichick was asked to comment on the ESPN conversation and his answer couldn&#8217;t have been more genuine.<\/p>\n<p id=\"NYZ4RFGPQNBKZPBVNKD7NHZUAY\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\">\u201cOne of the, not only most defining, but one of the great moments of my career,&#8221; Belichick said. &#8220;That combined with Robert (Kraft) giving me the opportunity to come here, I couldn\u2019t have asked for anything more. That wasn\u2019t a good situation for me and I didn\u2019t want to be part of it, so I wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p id=\"B7JYI37B6JBKZKFPVB76SUTQZM\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\">&#8220;But the other half of that was Robert giving me the opportunity to come here and trading \u2014 I mean, he gave up quite a bit for the to come here. That was a big trade. So I\u2019m very thankful that it worked out. I appreciate all the support from Robert, the Kraft Family, the Patriots organization and all the New England fans. I\u2019ll keep trying to do my best for this team and this organization. Give them the very best that I can. But I\u2019m very thankful for the opportunity to come here and I just wasn\u2019t going to stay there in that situation. So it worked out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since that fateful day that changed the course of two franchises, Belichick is coaching his 20th season in New England while the Jets have had six of their own come
