With Training Camp Set to begin, while I know the teams can\u2019t hit until there are 17 practices in, these are the things I am looking at.<\/p>\n

1) Quarterback Play<\/strong> \u2013 Cam Newton demands that you watch!\u00a0 Is he back from his shoulder and foot injuries?\u00a0 How is he meshing with the receivers?\u00a0 Does he know the routes and the timing?\u00a0 Can he improve his play action passing mechanics?\u00a0 Newton will get the opportunity to go up against the finest secondary in the league every day in practice.\u00a0 That will only help in the end.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m interested in the progress that Jarret Stidham has made in year two.\u00a0 Will he compete for the starting job?\u00a0 I hope so for the future of the team, especially given the injury history of Newton.\u00a0 I was surprised that J\u2019Mar Smith was cut if only from a workload perspective.\u00a0 That\u2019s a lot of throwing for just three QBs in camp.<\/p>\n

2) Offensive Line<\/strong> – This may be the best competition in camp.\u00a0 We have three rookies, two second year players, a couple of backups that we traded for.\u00a0 For the first time they will have their entire starting OL in place.\u00a0 How does David Andrews look coming back from his blood clot issues?\u00a0 Is Isiah Wynn better coming off his injury?\u00a0 How will the Patriots adjust from Marcus Cannon opting out for the 2020 campaign?\u00a0 It’s also strange that there will not be any Pre-season games.\u00a0 I wonder if the Patriots might consider broadcasting one of the in stadium practices since fans can\u2019t go to training camp?<\/p>\n

3) Second-Year Improvement<\/strong> \u2013 This is essential to the success of the team. Receiver N\u2019Keal Harry battled a high ankle sprain and missed a good chunk of last season.\u00a0\u00a0 He was never able to get on the same page as now former QB Tom Brady (Brady\u2019s fault as much as the rookie’s).\u00a0 Chase Winovich will be called upon to step up in the absence of Kyle Van Noy and Jamie Collins.\u00a0 Can Hjalte Froholt\u00a0 get with the program and secure a backup spot with the heavy competition in camp?\u00a0 JoJuan Williams has flexibility to play at CB or S.\u00a0 Can he carve out more playing time?<\/p>\n

Running back Damien Harris was invisible last season.\u00a0 All the backs are back with Rex Burkhead taking a pay cut to stay.\u00a0 I expect that we will see more of Harris with Newton as QB.\u00a0 Receivers Jakobi Myers and Gunner Olszewski \u00a0are back and trying to make the roster again.\u00a0 Myers will like Newton.\u00a0 He tends to throw the ball high and at 6\u20195\u201d that will help.\u00a0 I have read that Olszewski was impressive during the spring sessions (online).\u00a0 How that relates to actual practices remains to be seen.\u00a0\u00a0 Jacob Johnson is back after injury knocked him out.\u00a0 There is an opening at FB with James Devlin\u2019s retirement and with Dan Vitale deciding to opt out of the 2020 season.<\/p>\n

4) Rookies- Draft Picks and UDFAs<\/strong> \u2013 For 16 straight seasons an UDFA has made the Patriots Opening Day 53 man roster. That\u2019s why agents such as Drew Rosenhaus direct their UDFA to the Patriots.\u00a0 This year Rosenhaus sent WR Jeff Thomas, a player with some red flags, to the Patriots.\u00a0 A must read on Thomas was done by Henry McKenna of USA Today in his Jeff Thomas Story<\/a>.<\/strong>\u00a0 Further, Fox did a documentary called \u201c89 Blocks\u201d on Thomas\u2019 East St Louis State Championship season.\u00a0 Definitely worth watching.<\/p>\n

I loved the Patriots trading back and taking S Kyle Dugger.\u00a0 I was keyed in on Dugger since January and was pleasantly surprised Belichick would take a player from DII with his 1st<\/sup>.\u00a0 Taking two relatively unknown TEs in the 3rd<\/sup> rd was also a surprise.\u00a0\u00a0 But given that Devin Asiasi played for new WR coach Jedd Fisch at Michigan and then followed him to UCLA, it shouldn\u2019t surprise anyone he was taken by the Patriots.\u00a0 Asiasi had the reputation as a very good blocker and underrated pass catcher.\u00a0 Dalton \u201cRambo\u201d Keene is likely to lineup anywhere.\u00a0 He is a very good receiver and has running back skills for yards after the catch.\u00a0 LB Josh Uche and LB Afernee Jennings may be called upon to start earlier than most rookies.<\/p>\n

It was tough to see 7 UDFAs cut before the 1st<\/sup> on field practices.\u00a0 The NFL ruled that in order to practice with a full squad the training camp rosters needed to be reduced from 90 to 80.\u00a0 Thus QB J\u2019Mar Smith and Brian Lewerke, WR Will Hastings, Sean Reilly and Isaiah Zuber, DT Courtney Wallace, and LB Kyavah Tezino never got on the field.<\/p>\n

5) Linebackers<\/strong> \u2013 The Patriots may struggle at this position out of the gate, especially after we learned Dont’a Hightower has opted out for this season. Losing Collins, Van Noy and Elandon Roberts, and now Hightower, definitely hurts.\u00a0 Second-year players need to step up.\u00a0 Third-year player J\u2019Whaun Bentley should be able to handle the 1st<\/sup> two downs.\u00a0 Rookies Jennings and Uche may get opportunities on third down.\u00a0 Don\u2019t be surprised if UDFA De\u2019Jon Harris fills the role of Roberts.\u00a0 They are both under 6\u2019 ILBs.\u00a0 Patriots signed Brandon Copeland from the Jets and he may push for a job.<\/p>\n

Be aware the Patriots have 31 players heading into Free Agency next season.\u00a0 This may affect how the final roster looks.\u00a0 Any veteran that is on the opening game roster has their salary guaranteed for the season.\u00a0 Several UDFA received larger guaranteed salaries.\u00a0 All but Isaiah Zuber ($90,000) were retained.\u00a0\u00a0 Jeff Thomas has one of the lowest guarantees ($2,500).\u00a0 I think this will make him even hungrier.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
