The New England Patriots<\/strong><\/a> return home for a Monday Night Football matchup against Rex Ryan and the Buffalo Bills. The game will be televised by ESPN and will have their normal crew of Mike Tirico and Jon Gruden on the call. The game will also be carried on the radio by the Patriots flagship station of 98.5 the Sportshub with Bob Socci and Scott Zolak on the call. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:30 p.m.<\/p>\n

The Patriots (9-0) beat the New York Giants 27-26 on a last second 54-yard field goal by Stephen Gostkowski. Tom Brady threw for 193 yards in the fourth quarter as the Pats came back from a ten-point deficit. The big play of the drive was the 4th<\/sup> and 10 pass from the 20-yard line to Danny Amendola that got the team moving.<\/p>\n

The Bills (5-4) beat the New York Jets 22-17 on Thursday Night Football. The Bills have won two divisional games in a row, having beaten\u00a0Miami before that and are looking for a trifecta. Buffalo is in great position for a playoff spot in 2015 and needs to continue to play well to get to the post season, something the Bills haven\u2019t seen in 15 years.<\/p>\n

We here at\u00a0PatsFans.com<\/a>\u00a0are continuing our \u00a0\u201cRazor\u2019s Edge\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0 column in 2015 to give a quick break down on some of the key matchups of the game and what you can look for in how the game plays out.<\/p>\n

Series History:<\/strong>
\nThe Patriots and Bills have met 111 times with the Patriots holding a 68-42-1 overall edge in the series. In recent years the Patriots have dominated Buffalo with Tom Brady holding a 24-3 edge overall against the Bills. The last meeting was won by the Patriots back in September during Week 2. The Patriots had a 37-13 lead after three quarters\u00a0 before the Bills had a 4th<\/sup> quarter comeback that fell short 40-32.<\/p>\n

Here is a look at some of the key matchups and who holds the Razor\u2019s Edge.<\/p>\n

First up is the Patriots offense:<\/p>\n

Patriots RBs vs Bills Front Seven – <\/strong>Razor\u2019s Edge Buffalo
\n<\/em>The Patriots won\u2019t have Dion Lewis this time around but LaGarrette Blount has seemed to find his groove in the middle of the season. He\u2019s run well although the holes for the running game haven\u2019t been consistent since the OL has been a revolving door due to injuries.<\/p>\n

The Bills allow only 97.4 yards per game on the ground which is good for 6th<\/sup> in the NFL. Their front seven is very stout and aggressive against the run. In the first matchup the Patriots didn\u2019t test them by running much, but used the short passing game in lieu of the running game.<\/p>\n

This Monday look for the Patriots to utilize Blount and the running game much more against the Bills. They will try to establish the inside running game with Blount to keep the Bills pass rush off-balance and which will make play-action much more effective.<\/p>\n

Patriots WRs vs Bills Secondary – <\/strong>Razor\u2019s Edge Patriots
\n<\/em>The big key here is whether the three missing OL will be able to play this week. If tackles Sebastian Vollmer, Marcus Cannon and guard Tre\u2019 Jackson are available, then the pass protection should\u2026on paper be much more effective. Rex Ryan will be looking to slow down the NE offense<\/a>, something he\u2019s done well at in the past.<\/p>\n

The Bills have a very good and aggressive defense; they bring pressure on about a third of opponent\u2019s pass plays. In the first meeting, they tried to drop more men into coverage and Tom Brady made them pay to the tune of 466 yards. Look for them to blitz more this\u00a0week.<\/p>\n

The Patriots will be without Lewis and Julian Edelman, but look for them to target the middle of the field again. Brady picked on linebackers Nigel Bradham and Preston Brown in coverage and with TE Rob Gronkowski, the Bills will have their hands full. The Pats will also have Brandon LaFell who missed the first game while on PUP. Danny Amendola will have to pick up the slack with Edelman missing and look for James White to get more snaps out of the backfield.<\/p>\n

Next up the Buffalo offense:<\/p>\n

Bills RBs vs NE Front Seven –\u00a0<\/strong>Razor\u2019s Edge Buffalo
\n<\/em>The Bills have the 2nd<\/sup> ranked rushing attack in the NFL with LeSean McCoy, Karlos Williams and Tyrod Taylor scrambling out of the pocket. McCoy is healthy now and followed up a 116 yard game against Miami with a 112 yard effort against the Jets. This is the scenario Ryan was looking for early in the year and the Bills have gotten healthy at just the right time.<\/p>\n

The Patriots defense has improved against the run as the season has gone on. They currently are ranked 2nd<\/sup> in the league allowing only 88.2 yards per game. The front four rotation has paid dividends as they\u2019ve stuffed teams at the point of attack which has allowed the LBs to come up and make plays by attacking the gaps.<\/p>\n

This will be a tough test for the front seven this week; McCoy is completely healthy and is exploding in his cuts and is producing like they envisioned when he came over from Philly this offseason. Williams with a touchdown this week would set a new rookie record with scores in seven straight games.<\/p>\n

Bills WRs vs NE Secondary- <\/strong>Razor\u2019s Edge New England
\n<\/em>Taylor has played well this season and his numbers play that out. He\u2019s at his best when he makes plays with his feet, so the defensive ends, Chandler Jones, Rob Ninkovich and Jabaal Sheard will have to set the edge and keep him in the pocket where he\u2019s much less effective.<\/p>\n

A big matchup to watch will be McCoy coming out of the backfield against the linebackers (Collins probably won\u2019t play), and Clay going against LB\/S combinations. In the first game, New England played with a single high safety and they blitzed more than they have during other games. They mostly kept Taylor in the pocket and sacked him eight times while picking him off on three others.<\/p>\n

Look for lots of McCoy and Clay attacking the seam (single high safety), pass protection and containment will be what each team needs to be looking for. They’ll try to get Sammy Watkins involved early too.<\/p>\n

Special Teams- <\/strong>Razor\u2019s Edge Patriots
\n<\/em>The Bills and Patriots always have two of the best STs units in the league. Both teams have very solid coverage on both punts and kickoffs and both have excellent kickers.<\/p>\n

The Bills have veteran kicker Dan Carpenter and punter Colton Schmidt, who is averaging 47.8 yards per punt with an impressive 42.8 yard net.<\/p>\n

The Patriots counter with the unflappable Stephen Gostkowski and Ryan Allen. Gostkowski has been simply outstanding and Allen is underrated in the punting game. Danny Amendola returned a punt 82 yards last week and the Pats get the slight edge at home.<\/p>\n

Next up, who wins and why\u2026 <\/p>\n

Prediction:
\n<\/strong>The playoffs begin now for the Bills who really need this game not only to keep pace in the playoff Wildcard hunt but in their psyche. They have to know they can beat New England on their home turf and not just Week 17 when the Pats are resting their starters. The pressure is on\u2026<\/p>\n

It was evident by the meltdown Ryan had in his Thursday conference call with the Boston media. Asked a legitimate question about his obsession with NE, Ryan exploded and came off worse the longer he spoke. He had to know that he\u2019d be asked that since he\u2019s spoken about the Patriots three times this season on weeks where they weren\u2019t even playing them.<\/p>\n

The Patriots will have to go thru the adjustment period of not having Edelman in the offense. He is a big loss especially on third down and in the red zone. Brady picked apart the Bills in the opener with Lewis and Edelman but he still has Gronk and LaFell to go along with Amendola and Aaron Dobson who also had a big game Week 2.<\/p>\n

The Bills like to run out of the gun and with a healthy McCoy and Williams; they\u2019ll put pressure on the Patriots defense. This one will be closer but in the end, the Patriots at home are very tough to beat. Brady is lifetime 24-3 against the Bills and he\u2019ll get it done on the Monday night stage. Patriots 27-24<\/strong><\/p>\n
