First things to keep in mind when shaping this roster is a players age and whether or not they are a free agent next year. \u00a0\u00a0Currently, the Patriots have 24 players heading into Unrestricted Free Agency next year.\u00a0 They also have 2 players entering Restricted Free Agency and another 7 under Exclusive Rights Free Agency.\u00a0 That is an extraordinary amount.\u00a0 Usually a player will play well going into his Free Agent year.\u00a0 But the thought of losing half your roster is outrageous. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Injuries in pre-season and post 6\/1 cuts (salary cap savings) will play a big factor in determining the roster. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Total\u00a0\u00a0 53\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Offense 25\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

QUARTERBACK (2) <\/strong>Jarrett Stidham, Brian Hoyer<\/p>\n

Its Stidham\u2019s job!\u00a0 One of the UDFA QB\u2019s to PS<\/p>\n

RUNNING BACK (5) <\/strong>James White, Sony Michel, Brandon Bolden, Damien Harris, JJ Taylor<\/p>\n

This was a tough call.\u00a0 Brandon Bolden has been one of my favorites ever since I met him as a rookie in the Pro Shop.\u00a0 It was pre-season and I told him to keep doing those great things on Special Teams, that\u2019s how he would make the team.\u00a0 He has done that for going on his 9th<\/sup> season.\u00a0 However, he is 30 and a UFA next year.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0I know BB loves his role as a core special teams player.\u00a0 Bolden has improved his running ability the last two seasons (MIA and NE), so he is not a ST only player.\u00a0 Burkhead does not play ST, is injury prone and has a big salary.\u00a0 Cutting Burkhead and giving those carries to Harris makes sense.\u00a0 The savings from Burkhead pays for the entire draft class.\u00a0 White and Burkhead are both UFA\u2019s next year too!\u00a0 Taylor is kept because they might lose 3 RBs next year, and he can contribute on ST (Kick Returns).<\/p>\n

FULLBACK (2)<\/strong> Dan Vitale, Dalton Keene,<\/p>\n

I was not impressed with Jakob Johnson’s running ability and his blocking was average.\u00a0 Keene is a swiss army knife that will play all over, FB, H-Back and TE.\u00a0 You can even split him out wide and if you don\u2019t pay attention he will burn you.\u00a0 Both Vitale and Keene can catch well and run after the catch. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

WIDE RECEIVER (6)\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Julian Edelman, Jakobi Myers, Muhammed Sanu, N\u2019Keal Harry, Damiere Byrd, Will Hastings,<\/p>\n

Byrd and Sanu are UFA\u2019s next year.\u00a0 I kept Hastings because of the bonus they gave him and the fact that Stidham is familiar with him from their days at Auburn together.\u00a0 Sanu played hurt last year and he was ineffective.\u00a0 I expect big things from him this year.\u00a0 Byrd can flat out fly and the team needs speed.<\/p>\n

TIGHT END (2)<\/strong>, Devin Asiasi, Jake Burt,<\/p>\n

Both are better blockers than what they had last year.\u00a0 \u00a0Burt received $70K guaranteed so I expect him to stay. \u00a0Keene is receiving option too.<\/p>\n

OFFENSIVE LINE (8)<\/strong>
\nJoe Thuney, Shaq Mason, Marcus Cannon, Isaiah Wynn, David Andrews, Jodny Cajuste, Michael Owenu, Dustin Woodard<\/p>\n

Game Day rosters will expand to 48 from 46.\u00a0 One of those players has to be an Olineman.\u00a0 Two players can be called up from the practice squad and immediately sent back after the game.\u00a0 I see both Herron and Froholt on the PS.\u00a0 Woodard makes the 53 because he is the backup OC.\u00a0 Andrews and Thuney (Franchise Tag) are UFA next year.\u00a0 Cannon has a big contract and is pushing 32 so he could be a cap casualty on 6\/1.\u00a0 Right now they have no known replacement for Cannon.\u00a0 Cajuste could step up but that leaves them without a reliable swing tackle.\u00a0 O line is a fluid situation.<\/p>\n

Defense 24<\/strong><\/p>\n

DEFENSIVE TACKLE (4) <\/strong>Lawrence Guy, Adam Butler, Byron Cowart, Beau Allen,<\/p>\n

Pretty cut and dry here.\u00a0 Allen replaces Shelton.\u00a0 Of concern here is that he DL got gashed as the team played better competition down the stretch.\u00a0 I don\u2019t see much improvement.\u00a0 Bill Murray \u00a0might surprise in camp, but a role on the expanded (12 from 10) Practice Squad is more likely.<\/p>\n

DEFENSIVE END (4) <\/strong>John Simon, Chase Winowich, Josh Uche, Afernee Jennings,<\/p>\n

Another area that is pretty cut and dry.\u00a0 These are your edge guys.\u00a0 Winowich and Uche as designated pass rushers. \u00a0Simon and Jennings on 1st<\/sup> and 2nd<\/sup> down.<\/p>\n

LINEBACKER (5) <\/strong>\u00a0 Dont\u2019a Hightower, Ja\u2019Whaun Bentley, Cassh Mulia, \u00a0Brandon Copeland, De\u2019John Harris,<\/p>\n

Mulia and his 4.53 speed, replaces Brandon King as ST ace.\u00a0 UDFA Harris got the biggest contract of all UDFA on the team and will replace Elandon Roberts.<\/p>\n

CORNERBACK (5)\u00a0 <\/strong>Stephon Gilmore, Jason McCourty, JC Jackson, Jonathan Jones, Jojuan Williams,<\/p>\n

Solid group and the strength of the team.\u00a0 All are signed through 2021 except J. McCourty.\u00a0 JC Jackson is a Restricted FA next year that will need to have a 1st<\/sup> round tender assigned.\u00a0 Myles Bryant is an intriguing UDFA and may have a chance at making the team.\u00a0 If not he should be a PS candidate.<\/p>\n

SAFETY (6)\u00a0 <\/strong>Devin McCourty, Patrick Chung, Justin Bethel, Adrian Phillips, Cody Davis, Kyle Dugger<\/p>\n

Another strength is the safety group.\u00a0 Chung and D. McCourty are over 30.\u00a0 <\/strong>That is why Phillips was signed as a FA and Dugger drafted. \u00a0Bethel and Davis are ST aces and both are UFAs next year.\u00a0 Dugger will be the PR man.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n

Special Teams 4<\/strong><\/p>\n

K <\/strong>Justin Rohrwasser (1) \u00a0P<\/strong> P Jake Bailey(1), LS <\/strong>Joe Cardona (1), Matthew Slater ST<\/strong> Capt (1)<\/p>\n

Rohrwasser is not out of the woods with the 3% tattoo issue and that may haunt him all year.\u00a0 No one has really seen him kick in games conditions at this level so the jury is out on him.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
