{"id":28013,"date":"2020-04-15T10:00:12","date_gmt":"2020-04-15T14:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/?p=28013"},"modified":"2020-04-15T10:00:12","modified_gmt":"2020-04-15T14:00:12","slug":"patriots-seven-round-mock-draft-3-0","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patsfans.com\/patriots\/blog\/2020\/04\/15\/patriots-seven-round-mock-draft-3-0\/","title":{"rendered":"Patriots Seven Round Mock Draft 3.0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For this Mock Draft I will use PatsFans.com poster Bacon Grundle Candy\u2019s (BGC) Big Board of Patriot type players as my rankings.\u00a0 This Big Board is segregated by Rounds in which he thinks these players should be taken.\u00a0 For the Patriots needs, I used PatsFans.com Steve Balestrieri\u2019s listing of Patriots needs from his Sunday 4\/12 Notes column.\u00a0 For my 3<sup>rd<\/sup> Mock Draft I am using a 3<sup>rd<\/sup> different Mock Simulator.\u00a0 This time I am using the free Mock Simulator from Pro Football Focus (PFF.com).\u00a0 Although this Mock Simulator allows trades. I forced myself not to make any trades.\u00a0 The unique feature with this Mock Simulator, is that some team must be interested in trading for your pick.\u00a0 Hence, there needs to be a player on the board that they are interested in trading up for.\u00a0 \u00a0Bill Belichick may have problems finding trade partners in this draft.<\/p>\n<p><strong>R1 P23 Mekhi Becton OT Louisville<\/strong> &#8211; 6\u20197\u201d 364# with nearly 36\u201d reach, 5.1 40.\u00a0 This man is so big he has his own area code.\u00a0 Immediate plug in at RT.\u00a0 Replaces the 32 yo RT Cannon.\u00a0 Cutting Cannon will save another $4.5M on the salary cap, or enough to sign the entire draft class and have money left to sign a player or two.\u00a0 Becton started 33 games in his 3 years at Louisville.\u00a0 He has a 7\u2019 wingspan and is adept at either L or R Tackle.\u00a0 He has nimble feet for such a big man.\u00a0 Weight management will be a concern for him.\u00a0 BGC Rating 1<sup>st<\/sup> Round.\u00a0 Four other players with BGC 1<sup>st<\/sup> round grades were available but clearly Becton was the BPA.\u00a0 He should be a starter for 10 years and a mainstay on the OL.<\/p>\n<p><strong>R3 P87 K\u2019Von Wallace S Clemson<\/strong> &#8211; 5\u2019 11\u201d 206#, 4.53 40, 6.76 3 cone \u2013 Wallace is a hitter everywhere on the field.\u00a0 He is best known for blitzing, either sacking the QB or disrupting the run.\u00a0 He played the Big Nickel and safety positions.\u00a0 However, he is not very good in man coverage and there are questions if he has the instincts to play single high safety.\u00a0 BGC Rating mid 2<sup>nd<\/sup> Round.\u00a0 I am not as big a fan of Wallace, but we are using BGC\u2019s Big Board and I am staying true to that.\u00a0 This would be a value pick at #87.<\/p>\n<p><strong>R3 P98 Lynn Bowden WR Kentucky<\/strong> &#8211; 5\u201911\u201d 204# DNP in Combine Field Events \u00a0&#8211; This is the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> time I have picked Bowden, but earlier this time.\u00a0 Versatile &#8211; I have seen Bowden listed as a RB in many places but he is projecting to a slot receiver.\u00a0 He finished the last 8 games this past season as the Wildcats starting QB rushing for 1468 yards and 13 TDs.\u00a0 He had 7.9 yards per carry.\u00a0 He also started 5 games as a WR and led Kentucky with 30 receptions. He is a terrific Punt Returner and returns Kickoffs as well.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t run at the combine or his Pro Day but is projected to run between 4.38 and 4.58.\u00a0 BGC Rating 3<sup>rd<\/sup> Round.\u00a0 KJ Hill was available but chose Bowden because of his versatility and PR ability.<\/p>\n<p><strong>R3 P100 Leki Fotu NT &#8211;<\/strong> 6\u2019 5\u201d 330# 34\u201d arms, 5.15 40 \u2013 Fotu is a typical Samoan DLineman, a space eater.\u00a0 Fotu played rugby growing up and was good enough to play for the US National Jr team.\u00a0 Only played 1 year of HS football.\u00a0 He would immediately replace Received a medical flag at the Senior bowl so that\u2019s worth mentioning if he should\u00a0 drop in the draft.\u00a0 He is an immediate replacement for Danny Shelton.\u00a0 BGC Rating 3<sup>rd<\/sup> Round<\/p>\n<p><strong>R4 P125 Bryce Hopkins TE Purdue &#8211;<\/strong> 6\u2019 4\u201d 245\u201d 4.66 40 \u2013 Hopkins blossomed as a Sr with 61 catches for 830 yds, 7 TDs in 12 games (11 starts).\u00a0 He is limited to be a slot TE.\u00a0 Not very good at blocking and he struggles to get separation in man coverage.\u00a0 BGC Rating 3<sup>rd<\/sup> Round.<\/p>\n<p><strong>R5 P172 James Proche WR SMU<\/strong> &#8211; 5\u201911\u201d 201# Did BP and interviews only at combine.\u00a0 His 20 reps on BP was third highest for WR (one below both TE\u2019s I have selected). Estimated 4.52 40 per NFL Daft Scout.\u00a0 I have included Proche in all three Mock Drafts.\u00a0 Proche had an incredible career at SMU.\u00a0 Played 4 years and had 301 catches, for 3869 yards and 39 TDs.\u00a0 He has terrific ball tracking skills and has return skills as well.\u00a0 When the ball is near him, its his.\u00a0 Great body control.\u00a0 Reports from the Senior Bowl often mentioned the Patriots and James Proche in the same sentence.\u00a0 He made several highlight reel catches during the practices.\u00a0 He also runs precise routes.\u00a0 Very determined and competitive.\u00a0 BGC had him ranked much higher as a high 3<sup>rd<\/sup> round selection.\u00a0 Great value at #172<\/p>\n<p><strong>R6 P195 Dalton Keene TE Virginia Tech &#8211;<\/strong> 6\u2019 4\u201d 253#, 4.71 40. 7.07 3-cone.\u00a0 NESN\u2019s Doug Kyed has convinced me.\u00a0 Keene is the Sleeper of the TE class.\u00a0 Kyed says \u201cHe left for the pros after his junior season, so he\u2019s still only 20 years old. He\u2019s a good blocker, moves well, has NFL size and speed and is unrelenting after the catch. He\u2019s also versatile. He can play tight end, H-back, fullback and some running back.\u201d\u00a0 Kyed compares him to George Kittle coming out of college.\u00a0 Little production but great potential.\u00a0 This is the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> time I have selected Keene.\u00a0 BGC has a rating of a 4<sup>th<\/sup> Round.\u00a0 Again a great value.<\/p>\n<p><strong>R6 P204 Antoine Brooks S Maryland &#8211;<\/strong> 5\u2019 11\u2019 220# 4.64 40, 20 BP no other results \u2013 Brooks has the size of a LB and originally played the position as a freshman.\u00a0 Moved to S as a soph and developed quickly.\u00a0 He is another banger.\u00a0 More suited as an in the box safety than single high safety.\u00a0 Will have an impact on special teams and should contribute on all 4 ST units.\u00a0 BGS Ranking 4<sup>th<\/sup> Round.\u00a0 Another good value.<\/p>\n<p><strong>R6 P212 Mychal Walker LB Fresno St &#8211;<\/strong> 6\u20193\u201d 230# 4.65 7.09 3 cone 10\u2019s\u201d BJ.\u00a0 Walker played ILB, transferred to Fresno St from Azusa Pacific after a very successful Soph season with 102 tackles, 11 for loss and 2.5 sacks.\u00a0 Started 14 games as a Jr after sitting out a year (transfer) and led the Bulldogs on Defense with an impressive stat line of 87 tackles, 14 for loss, 4.5 sacks, 6 pass breakups, Int, 2 forced fumbles, and 2 blocked kicks.\u00a0 As a Senior he had 93 tackles, 9 for loss, 4 pass breakups in 12 games. \u00a0All conference 1<sup>st<\/sup> team both as Jr and Sr, team Defensive MVP as a Jr.\u00a0 Above average field awareness but doesn\u2019t play with NFL level physicality.\u00a0 Core special teamer.\u00a0 BGC Ranking 4<sup>th<\/sup> Rd.\u00a0 Good value again.<\/p>\n<p><strong>R6 P213 Nate Stanley QB Iowa &#8211;<\/strong> 6\u20194\u201d 238 4.81 40, size 10 hands \u2013 Stanley played in parts of 7 games as a Freshman and then started three years.\u00a0 Three year captain.\u00a0 Although he is very experienced, he has never thrown for over 60% completion percentage which is a key point for the Patriots.\u00a0 He will compete for a spot on the PS and be a camp arm.\u00a0 Iowa Head Coach Kirk Ferentz is a discipline from the Belichick coaching tree. So BB has the inside scoop on Stanley.\u00a0 BGC Ranking 4<sup>th<\/sup> Round.\u00a0 I would normally have taken James Morgan FIU before taking Stanley.<\/p>\n<p><strong>R7 P230 Kyle Murphy IOL Rhode Island &#8211;<\/strong> 6\u20193\u201d 313, 5.3 40, Murphy is as experienced as they come, starting 3 games as a true Freshman, full time starter as Soph (12 games 6 L, 6 RT), all conference as Jr (11 games 10 LT and 1 OC) and as a Senior (12 games at LT).\u00a0 AP 2<sup>nd<\/sup> Team All American.\u00a0 Very versatile and projects to OG because of lack of height.\u00a0 Team captain his senior season.\u00a0 Native of Atlleboro MA.\u00a0 Very good pass blocker but will need to improve his strength at the NFL level.\u00a0 Good developmental prospect that the Patriots could slide to PS for further development.\u00a0 BGC Ranking 3<sup>rd<\/sup> Round.\u00a0 Terrific value for this late in the draft.<\/p>\n<p><strong>R7 P 241 Tyler Bass K Georgia Southern &#8211;<\/strong>\u00a05\u2019 10\u201d 185 &#8211; Bass has a tremendous percentage of touchbacks on kickoffs (73.9%) during his career and his accuracy between 30 \u2013 50 yards is very good at 93%.\u00a0 He is on the small size, but has a big leg.\u00a0 Concerns that he wasn\u2019t asked to try kicks over 50 yards, but his kickoff% indicates he should be able to make those kicks.\u00a0 BGC has no rankings for Kickers.\u00a0 I would prefer to take one as an UDFA.\u00a0 Another name to kick around is Chase Vinatieri from South Dakota St.\u00a0 Hhhhmmm that name and school rings a bell!\u00a0 He is Adam Vinatieri\u2019 nephew, as they both played for SDSU.\u00a0 He is the biggest of the available kickers at 6\u2019 2\u201d 215 and he has experience kicking in bad weather.<\/p>\n<p>This was a fun exercise.\u00a0 Players I like, the NFL GMs like as well and they usually go higher than these draft simulators project.\u00a0 Walker, Keene, Proche, Murphy and Bowden will probably go higher than where I was able to draft them. \u00a0That is the fun of the draft, adjusting the strategy to meet the needs of the team while always trying to maximize the value by selecting the Best Player Available.\u00a0 This is my last 7 round Patriots Mock Draft.\u00a0 Next Thursday I will post a 1<sup>st<\/sup> round draft prediction.<\/p>\n<p>Note:\u00a0 Preparations are ongoing for this unprecedented draft.\u00a0 There will be a test of the draft process next week a few days before the draft to work out any bugs in the system.\u00a0 The league will run a live mock draft with all 32 teams participating.\u00a0 They will be testing out their logistical processes to insure they can all communicate.<\/p>\n<p>One area that will be an absolute free-for-all will be signing of UDFA.\u00a0 Immediately after the draft UDFA can sign with teams.\u00a0 Usually there is little negotiations of bonuses.\u00a0 The Patriots have been known to pay some of the highest bonuses to UDFA.\u00a0 That might explain why they get players that end up sticking on the roster.\u00a0 Every year dating back to Adam Vinatieri, the Patriots have had an UDFA make their team out of camp.\u00a0 This year the logistics of signing these players will be much more difficult.\u00a0 Usually as the draft gets to that last round teams are calling agents and telling them if their client doesn\u2019t get drafted they will sign them for X amount of bonus.\u00a0 The UDFA weighs the chance they will get with that team based upon the team needs and whether or not an UDFA will get an honest chance to make the team or just be camp fodder.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For my 3rd Mock Draft I am using a 3rd different Mock Simulator.\u00a0 This time I am using the free Mock Simulator from Pro Football Focus (PFF.com).\u00a0 Although this Mock Simulator allows trades.
