Here is a look at how the two teams compare statistically; the numbers reflect an average per game (or per play) rather than gross totals. Per-game stats rather than gross totals are used because that makes the rankings more meaningful, considering other NFL teams have played a different number of games thus far due to bye weeks.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>When<\/strong><\/span>: Sunday, November 8 at 1:00 pm ET<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Where<\/strong><\/span>: Gillette Stadium, Foxborough MA<\/p>\n<p><strong>Television<\/strong>: CBS; announcers: Kevin Burkhardt, John Lynch<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Weather<\/strong><\/span>: Forecast is for a sunny day with temperature at kickoff of 54\u00b0; zero percent chance of precipitation and a slight breeze with winds of 9 mph.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Odds<\/strong><\/span>: The Patriots opened as <span style=\"color: #000080;\">12\u00bd<\/span> point favorites a week ago Thursday, prior to last weekend&#8217;s games. On Sunday night following the blowout win over Miami the line quickly moved up to <span style=\"color: #000080;\">14<\/span> in most venues. That has remained relatively steady since then; the only exceptions being <em>SportBet.com<\/em> at Pats -15, and <em>Bovada<\/em> with the Patriots at <span style=\"color: #000080;\">-14\u00bd<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The over\/under is <span style=\"color: #000080;\">52<\/span>, with a few places a half point higher or lower. Typical money lines have the <span style=\"color: #000080;\">Patriots at -1600<\/span> and the <span style=\"color: #000080;\">Redskins at +900<\/span>, while several venues have taken the game completely off their money line board due to the unusually large risk.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Head-to-Head Series Record<\/strong><\/span>: Washington leads 6-3. The Patriots have won the last two meetings by a combined score of 86-34, and are 2-1 in the Bill Belichick era.<\/p>\n<p>In 2011 the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/redskins\/game-redskins-give-patriots-all-they-can-handle-but-lose-34-27\/2011\/12\/11\/gIQAzARsnO_story.html\" target=\"_blank\">Pats won 34-27<\/a> in a game that was highlighted by <span style=\"color: #000080;\">Rob Gronkowski<\/span> dragging two defenders along for a 49-yard gain, and <span style=\"color: #000080;\">Wes Welker<\/span> becoming the third player in NFL history with four 100-catch seasons. This was also the game that the sports gossip circuit had a field day with when <span style=\"color: #000080;\">Bill O&#8217;Brien<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #000080;\">Tom Brady<\/span> were caught on camera shouting at each other following a Brady 4th quarter interception in the end zone of a pass intended for <span style=\"color: #000080;\">Tiquan Underwood<\/span>. <span style=\"color: #000080;\">Mike Shanahan<\/span>&#8216;s team marched down the length of the field but <span style=\"color: #000080;\">Jerod Mayo<\/span> caught a <span style=\"color: #000080;\">Rex Grossman<\/span> pass intended for <span style=\"color: #000080;\">Santana Moss<\/span> on the 5-yard line with 20 seconds remaining to secure the victory.<\/p>\n<p>The media had an even bigger field day in 2007 when the Pats defeated <span style=\"color: #000080;\">Joe Gibb<\/span>&#8216;s Redskins 52-7. <span style=\"color: #000080;\">Bill Belichick<\/span> was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2007\/10\/28\/AR2007102801741.html?sid=ST2007102801575\" target=\"_blank\">excoriated in the press for going for it on fourth down rather than kicking a field goal late in the game<\/a>, with some to this day still using that as a reference that BB is &#8216;arrogant&#8217; and worthy of scorn.<\/p>\n<p>In 2003 the Patriots lost at Washington by the score of 20-17. The Pats put forth a very lackluster week four performance that day to fall to 2-2, committing four turnovers: three picks by Brady, and a <span style=\"color: #000080;\">Kevin Faulk<\/span> fumble on the goal line. The Pats<a href=\"http:\/\/www.csnne.com\/new-england-patriots\/one-spurrier-win-redskins-had-big-impact-patriots\" target=\"_blank\"> went on to win the next 21 games in a row<\/a>, including their second Super Bowl. Washington does not run the ball effectively (28th in yards per carry, 23rd in rushing yards per game) so that is not New England&#8217;s area of concern.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So who will <span style=\"color: #000080;\">Bill Belichick<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #000080;\">Matt Patricia<\/span> scheme to stop? WR <span style=\"color: #000080;\">DeSean Jackson<\/span> is Washington&#8217;s most explosive player, but this would be his first appearance since week one; we are still not even sure if Jackson will play. I&#8217;m thinking that if he is a go then Belichick will put\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000080;\">Malcolm Butler<\/span> on Jackson and <span style=\"color: #000080;\">Logan Ryan<\/span> with safety help on <span style=\"color: #000080;\">Pierre Garcon<\/span>; that would leave <span style=\"color: #000080;\">Justin Green<\/span> on <span style=\"color: #000080;\">Andre Roberts<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To me though the biggest concern is not one of the wide receivers, but tight end <span style=\"color: #000080;\">Jordan Reed<\/span>. Reed is too quick for any linebacker to cover him, and at 6&#8217;2&#8243; 237 it is a very difficult task for a corner to bring him down. The Patriots have occasionally had issues with opposing tight ends for several years now, and Reed could cause the Pats fits. <span style=\"color: #000080;\">Patrick Chung<\/span> has done a fine job this year covering <span style=\"color: #000080;\">Jason Witten<\/span> (five catches for 33 yards) and <span style=\"color: #000080;\">Charles Clay<\/span> (three catches for 19 yards), but Reed is at this point much better than either of those two players.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In 4\u00bd games this year &#8211; Reed has missed time due to concussions &#8211; the tight end has 350 yards receiving with three touchdowns and 22 first downs, catching 35 of the 47 passes (74%) thrown his way. Reed leads Washington in first downs and is tied for the lead in receiving yards and touchdowns, despite the time he has missed. To me the primary challenge is to stop Reed &#8211; much the way the Pats did against <span style=\"color: #000080;\">Tony Gonzalez<\/span> a few years ago &#8211; and dare <span style=\"color: #000080;\">Kirk Cousins<\/span> to beat the Patriots deep.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On the other side of the ball the Patriots should be fine as long as they don&#8217;t beat themselves. NT <span style=\"color: #000080;\">Terrance Knighton<\/span> did not make the trip due to migraines, which will help the banged-up offensive line protect Brady. Linebacker <span style=\"color: #000080;\">Ryan Kerrigan<\/span> will play but is doing so with a fractured hand, and corner <span style=\"color: #000080;\">Chris Culliver<\/span> has been unable to practice due to inflammation in his knee. The Washington defense is neither talented nor deep enough to keep up with all of New England&#8217;s offensive options; this D is somewhere between Jacksonville&#8217;s and Miami&#8217;s, and we saw what the Patriot offense was able to accomplish against both of those teams.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Prediction: Patriots 38, Washington 20<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Despite the huge spread I would still take New England minus the points; the Patriots are simply that much better than the Skins.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To me though the biggest concern is not one of the wide receivers, but tight end Jordan Reed.
