The Patriots finish off a three game home stand with a Sunday afternoon matchup against the Washington Redskins. After wins over the Jets and Dolphins the Patriots are looking to go 8-0 to start the season.<\/p>\n

Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. and the game will be televised on Fox with Kevin Burkhardt, John Lynch on the call with Pam Oliver handling sideline duties. The game can be seen locally on Fox 25 and as always the radio call is on the Patriots flagship station 98.5 with Bob Socci and Scott Zolak on the call.<\/p>\n

The Redskins (3-4) had a big come-from-behind win over the Tampa Bay Bucs 31-30. After falling behind 24-0, the Skins rallied behind Kirk Cousins who quarterbacked them to a game winning touchdown pass with under a minute left. In the downtrodden NFC East this season, Washington is only a half game out of the division lead.<\/p>\n

The Patriots (7-0), dominated the Miami Dolphins 36-7 behind another stellar Tom Brady performance. Brady completed 26 \u2013 38 passes for 356 yards and four touchdowns and is leading the NFL in passer rating with 115.8. On the season he has 20 touchdown passes against only one interception.<\/p>\n

We here at\u00a0PatsFans.com\u00a0are continuing our \u00a0\u201cRazor\u2019s Edge\u201d\u00a0 column in 2015 to give a quick break down on some of the key matchups of the game and what you can look for in how the game plays out.<\/p>\n

Series History:<\/strong> The Patriots and Redskins will meet for only the 10th<\/sup> time in their history. The Redskins lead overall 6-3 and won six straight contests between 1978 and 2003. The Patriots won the last two including their last meeting a 34-27 meeting in Washington in 2011.<\/p>\n

Here is a look at some of the key matchups and who holds the Razor\u2019s Edge.<\/p>\n

First up is the Patriots offense:<\/p>\n

Patriots RBs vs Redskins Front Seven \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>Razor\u2019s Edge New England
\n<\/em>The Patriots controlled the line of scrimmage against a very tough Miami front four, despite having a limited and banged up offensive line and having one of their key running backs, Dion Lewis not at 100 percent physically either.<\/p>\n

Washington has ranked in the bottom third of the league in rush defense all season and is currently 26th<\/sup> allowing 128.4 yards per game. They have some big bodies up front starting with Terrance \u201cPot Roast\u201d Knighton and Chris Baker but look for the Patriots to mix things up and attempt to run more this week than they\u2019ve been doing lately.<\/p>\n

Patriots WRs vs Redskins Secondary \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>Razor\u2019s Edge New England
\n<\/em>Brady continues his outstanding play on the season and has a plethora of weapons at his disposal, including Rob Gronkowski, Julian Edelman, Danny Amendola, Brandon LaFell and Dion Lewis out of the backfield.<\/p>\n

The Redskins are banged up at the cornerback position and 2nd<\/sup> year player Bashaud Breeland has filled in admirably as the team\u2019s #1 corner in the absence of both DeAngelo Hall and Chris Culliver. Their best pass rusher Ryan Kerrigan had surgery on his hand and is questionable for this one.<\/p>\n

The Patriots will attempt to spread them out vertically more in this game which will open up things underneath and over the middle for Rob Gronkowski to operate in against the Skins LBs and safeties. The Patriots just have too many weapons for Washington to cover, adding Dion Lewis to the mix just compounds things. The Skins will need a very good pass rush on Sunday to keep this close.<\/p>\n

Next up the Redskins offense:<\/p>\n

Redskins RBs vs NE Front Seven \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>Razor\u2019s Edge Washington
\n<\/em>The Redskins haven\u2019t been running the ball effectively and it starts with their offensive line. They just haven\u2019t been getting enough push and opening up holes for Alfred Morris and Matt Jones.<\/p>\n

Morris had 121 yards in Week 1 and the Skins had 300 yards rushing in their first two games. Since then, Morris has only gained 181 yards since his big season opening game. They\u2019ll need the big men up front to open some holes to take the pressure off of Cousins and the passing game. They\u2019ve only run for 135 yards total in their last three games.<\/p>\n

The Patriots front seven has really improved the past two weeks against both the Jets and the Dolphins, two teams that run the football very well. The front seven especially the defensive line was able to stand stout at the point of attack and stuff the backs before they could get to the second level. Getting Dont\u2019a Hightower back was a huge boost for the defense, and he\u2019s been outstanding.<\/p>\n

Redskins WRs vs NE Secondary-\u00a0<\/strong>Razor\u2019s Edge New England
\n<\/em>In the Redskins West Coast passing scheme, Cousins has leaned heavily on WR Pierre Garcon to move the chains and be his go-to guy. TE Jordan Richards is emerging as a reliable receiver who can pile yards after the catch. This week they may get the talented but volatile DeSean Jackson back. He should help them stretch the field.<\/p>\n

The Patriots secondary hasn\u2019t been great, but they\u2019re improving and are playing with a lot of confidence especially the safeties, Devin McCourty, Pat Chung and Duron Harmon. The pass rush has generated 26 sacks but is facing an OL that has only given up eight.<\/p>\n

If Jackson can\u2019t go this week, the Patriots should stack the line of scrimmage and be aggressive and force Cousins to take shots down the field by taking away everything underneath. He\u2019s been prone to several mistakes and has thrown eight picks on the season. Force the issue this week and that number could go up.<\/p>\n

Special Teams-\u00a0<\/strong>Razor\u2019s Edge New England
\n<\/em>The Patriots have arguably the most solid tandem of kickers in the NFL. Stephen Gostkowski hasn\u2019t missed a kick all season and Ryan Allen has been very adept at pinning opponents deep in their territory. He has a 46.0 yard punting average with a 42.8 yard net average. The Patriots coverage units are solid although they did give up a big return to Jarvis Landry last week\u2026.something Bill Belichick must have played over and over during film sessions this week.<\/p>\n

The Redskins have kicker Dustin Hopkins who has hit on 12 of 13 field goals this season as well as Tress Way who is averaging 44.9 yards per punt this season. Rashad Ross is a dangerous kick returner averaging 26.1 yards per kick and has a 101 yard return against the Giants. The Skins weakness is their punt coverage where they\u2019re allowing 15.1 yards per punt return. Against Danny Amendola and Julian Edelman, that will be an area that the Patriots look to exploit.<\/p>\n

Next up, our prediction on who wins and why\u2026<\/p>\n

Prediction:
\n<\/strong>This is a game the Patriots should win, they have the edge in the key areas and plus they\u2019re playing at home where they\u2019ve won their last 71 games when leading at halftime. So they\u2019ll be looking to get off to a quick start and put the pressure on Cousins and the Skins offense to keep up.<\/p>\n

Washington played a lot of Cover 3 early in the season and if they do that, look for Brady to send his WRs vertical to open up room for Gronkowski. Look for the Pats to split Lewis out wide on the linebackers and force them to go to man coverage. Against a depleted secondary there will be plenty of matchups to exploit. Look for the Patriots to take more shots downfield this week.<\/p>\n

Cousins will have to click early in the short passing game and then take his shots down the field to keep the Redskins into this one. If Jackson can go, he\u2019d held with that aspect in a big way. Although Garcon is the go-to guy, the player I\u2019d watch on Sunday is Reed at the TE position.<\/p>\n

In the end, the Patriots have too many weapons for the Redskins to handle. Brady is the best in the business at getting the ball out quickly and finding matchups. By mixing in the run effectively, this one should be a solid victory to finish off the home stand. Patriots 37-17<\/strong><\/p>\n
