Ryan Mallett’s had a tough time as a professional in the NFL and leading up to his career when he attended Arkansas. The mistakes he made off the field as a student athlete dropped his draft stock and allowed the Patriots to draft him at No. 74th overall in the 2011 draft.<\/p>\n

When Mallett was selected, some deemed him the heir-apparent to Tom Brady. He was unimpressive for a lot of his time in New England and was traded to the Texans in 2015 for a conditional draft pick.<\/p>\n

His time in Houston saw him go from starter to outsider before being released and the whole situation leading up to his departure was a mess. According to reports, Mallett missed his team’s charter flight for their game against Miami, which he blamed on Houston traffic. The only issue there was that the Houston Chronicle reported that traffic that day was non-existent and he had a previous history for being late for a practice during training camp when he said his alarm clock broke.<\/p>\n

It was a great opportunity to seize a starting role, and it’s safe to say Mallett blew it.<\/p>\n

Looking back at how Mallett turned out given where he was selected, it’s time to revisit the 2011 NFL draft. Here are 10 players New England could have selected instead of Mallett.

1) Richard Sherman<\/strong> — How interesting would this have been? Sherman’s vocal persona might contradict Bill Belichick’s in-house style, but there’s no denying his ability. Of course, hindsight being 20\/20, Sherman would be a top five pick in the 2011 draft.<\/p>\n

If he was on the team in 2014, however, would the team still have targeted Darrelle Revis? Who knows, maybe that changes the course of history. But there’s no question he would be an impact player for this team.<\/p>\n

\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2) Jurrell Casey —<\/strong> While Casey plays for one of the more anonymous teams in the NFL, the Tennessee Titans, he’s one of the more disruptive interior defensive lineman. He forces opponents to double him and can create pressure up the middle.<\/p>\n

3) K.J. Wright<\/strong> — Wright was selected in fourth round by the Seahawks, sitting behind first-round bust Aaron Curry. Once Curry was shipped to Oakland, Wright stepped into the weak side role and had success. He’s not as highly publicized as some of the other Seattle defenders, but he’s a good linebacker that produces.<\/p>\n

4) Jason Kelce<\/strong> — The Eagles grabbed Kelce and he quickly became one of their best offensive lineman. He’s solid on the interior, consistent and rarely makes mistakes. He could have made the interior transition much smoother after Dan Koppen hung up the cleats.<\/p>\n

\nThomas is now with the Jaguars, but it’s hard not to ponder the Patriots’ offense with both Thomas and Gronkowski.<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

5) Julius Thomas<\/strong> — The Broncos selected Thomas in 2011, but it wasn’t until 2013 when he exploded onto the scene. His 65 receptions and 12 touchdowns made Denver’s passing attack incredibly dangerous. He would have been behind Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez, until 2013, it would have been amazing to see a seamless transition into a new dynamic duo in the Pats two tight end sets.<\/p>\n

\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nLewis’ success last season makes you wonder how nice it could have been if they drafted him instead of Mallett.<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

6) Dion Lewis<\/strong> — Now that Lewis is on the team and a key part of the Patriots offense, I was unsure whether to include him on this list. After all, New England did select Shane Vereen and Steven Ridley in the 2011 draft. But Lewis’ success makes you wonder if he could have made an impact on past teams.<\/p>\n

7) Buster Skrine<\/strong> –After starting his career in Cleveland, Skrine signed with the New York Jets last off-season and has fit in nicely with their secondary. He’s become a strong slot cornerback, showing progress each year. He’s not one of the league’s best, but a good overall player that could have given a boost to a secondary that struggled in the post-season before 2014.<\/p>\n

8) Pernell McPhee<\/strong> — The Ravens couldn’t afford to keep McPhee after a strong performance last season. The outside linebacker is a well-rounded player, offering pass rush help and the ability to set the edge. While the Patriots added Jabaal Sheard last off-season, prior to Chandler Jones’ departure, McPhee could have helped this group as a whole while definitely making them more dangerous.<\/p>\n

9) Jeremy Kerley<\/strong> — Kerley’s not a game breaker by any means, but a solid receiver that always seems to step up when facing New England. Given the Patriots near inability to select and develop quality receivers in the Bill Belichick era, along with taking him out of the equation when facing a division rival, would make the Kerley selection a win-win.<\/p>\n

10) Byron Maxwell<\/strong> — I know, I know. Some of you will read this and say, “Maxwell?! He’s way overpaid.” You would be correct. But we aren’t inheriting his ridiculous contract the Philadelphia Eagles gave him last off-season. He would’ve been an interesting prospect to develop in a secondary which desperately needed help and could still use some additional talent.<\/p>\n
