The New England Patriots<\/strong><\/a> play the second game of their current three game home stand on Thursday Night Football against the Miami Dolphins. The game will be televised by the NFL Network, and will have CBS\u2019 top announcing crew of Jim Nantz and Phil Simms on the call. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. ET<\/p>\n

The Dolphins (3-3) have been re-energized and playing with passion under new coach Dan Campbell. After limping off to a 1-3 start under Joe Philbin, he was let go and the tough-minded, Campbell has brought physicality back to the team. They routed Tennessee 38-10 and then raced out to a 41-0 halftime lead over Houston before cruising to a 44-26 win.<\/p>\n

New England (6-0), had a tough come-from-behind win on Sunday over the New York Jets 30-23. Tom Brady continued his stellar play passing for 355 yards and two touchdowns and was the Patriots leading rusher, adding a one yard touchdown run.<\/p>\n

We here at\u00a0PatsFans.com<\/a>\u00a0are continuing our \u00a0\u201cRazor\u2019s Edge\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0 column in 2015 to give a quick break down on some of the key matchups of the game and what you can look for in how the game plays out.<\/p>\n

Series History: <\/strong>The Patriots and Dolphins will meet for the 100th<\/sup> time on Thursday night. The series was dominated by the Dolphins in during the middle years especially in Miami but the Patriots under Bill Belichick have turned the tide in recent years.<\/p>\n

The Patriots hold a 32-17 advantage in their home games against Miami. The teams have split their matchups the last two seasons with each winning at home. Miami won the season opener last season with the Patriots taking a December matchup in Foxboro.<\/p>\n

Here is a look at some of the key matchups and who holds the Razor\u2019s Edge.<\/p>\n

First up is the Patriots offense:<\/p>\n

Patriots RBs vs Dolphins Front Seven – <\/strong>Razor\u2019s Edge Miami
\n<\/em>The Dolphins have a very strong defensive line, which is one of the strengths of their team. They were being gashed early in the season but have turned things around with much better play the past two weeks. Olivier Vernon, Earl Mitchell, Ndamukong Suh and Cameron Wake can not only rush the passer but be tough against the run as well.<\/p>\n

The Patriots had only two healthy running backs on Sunday and really didn\u2019t even make an attempt to run the ball with only five rushing attempts by their backs. With a patchwork offensive line with two of their top three tackles missing and one of their starting guards, it was tough sledding. This week if Dion Lewis and Brandon Bolden are healthy, we should see more rushing attempts to take all of the pressure off of Brady.<\/p>\n

Patriots WRs vs Dolphins Secondary – <\/strong>Razor\u2019s Edge New England
\n<\/em>Brady has been lights out this season and has been spreading the ball around to his receivers while getting the ball out in less than two seconds from snap to throw. Getting Brandon LaFell back will be a big boost to an already potent offense with Gronkowski, Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola.<\/p>\n

Miami\u2019s pass rush has had ten sacks the past two weeks and Brady will be looking to attack the middle of the Dolphins defense, namely the linebackers. Keeping Brady upright is the key here, they must keep Wake, Vernon and Suh at bay long enough to give Brady time.<\/p>\n

With Rob Gronkowski and Scott Chandler, the Patriots should find plenty of room to work in the middle of the field. Lewis, if healthy, would add to the load on Miami\u2019s LBs with passes out of the backfield. It all comes down to time for Brady to throw.<\/p>\n

Next up the Dolphins offense:<\/p>\n

Dolphins RBs vs NE Front Seven –\u00a0<\/strong>Razor\u2019s Edge Miami
\n<\/em>The Dolphins Lamar Miller for some strange reason was only getting around 9-10 touches a game under Joe Philbin. Now he\u2019s getting the ball a lot more and the offense is thriving. He had 19 carries for 113 yards in Tennessee and 175 yards including a 85 yard touchdown run against Houston. Stopping him will be priority number 1.<\/p>\n

The Patriots have been susceptible against the run this season, but on Sunday against the Jets, they held New York\u2019s running backs to 60 yards rushing and a 2.5 yard per carry average. The big men up front, Alan Branch and Dominique Easley both were outstanding. Linebackers Dont\u2019a Hightower and Jamie Collins were all over the field and shooting the gaps, defeating the play at the point of attack. They\u2019ll need that kind of game on Thursday.<\/p>\n

Dolphins WRs vs NE Secondary- <\/strong>Razor\u2019s Edge New England
\n<\/em>Ryan Tannehill has thrived in the past two games under Dan Campbell. The simplified offense with a balanced rushing and passing attack has been outstanding scoring 79 points in two weeks. With a bevy weapons to throw to, Tannehill\u2019s favorite two targets have been Jarvis Landry and Rishard Matthews.<\/p>\n

Both had big plays through the air last week with Landry going 50 yards for a touchdown where he seemingly made every member of the Texans whiff on a tackle while heading to the end zone. Miller added a 54-yard touchdown reception as well. Tannehill completed 25 passes in a row before his final attempt on the day was dropped.<\/p>\n

The Patriots will need to contain Tannehill\u2019s rollouts to the edge where he has the option to run or pass and bring pressure from the edge as well as up the middle. The Dolphins guards are susceptible to pressure and Hightower could play a key role here in blitzing. The secondary will have to stop the big play this week and force Tannehill into making the shorter throws where they\u2019ll have to move down the field in smaller chunks.<\/p>\n

Special Teams- <\/strong>Razor\u2019s Edge New England
\n<\/em>The Patriots have two of the best kickers in the business with Stephen Gostkowski and Ryan Allen. Gostkowski has made 15 straight field goals this season and hasn\u2019t missed a PAT since his rookie season of 2006. That\u2019s pretty reliable. Allen is averaging 46.6 yards per punt with 42.9 yards net. Danny Amendola and Edelman return kicks for the Patriots and have been solid. The Patriots coverage units with Matthew Slater have been very solid this season.<\/p>\n

Miami has two rookies in the kicking game; punter Matt Darr is averaging 48.3 yards per punt and kicker Andrew Franks. The Dolphins have one of the more dangerous returners in the game with the electric Landry returning punts and he\u2019s averaging 13.4 yards per punt return. Landry and Williams return kickoffs.<\/p>\n

Next up, our prediction on who wins and why\u2026<\/p>\n

Prediction:
\n<\/strong>Thursday football games are always a wildcard. While the league loves them, they generally provide the sloppiest games of the week. With little time to recover from Sunday\u2019s games and less time to prepare, the product is usually of the poorer quality.<\/p>\n

While the home team generally has the advantage in these contests, don\u2019t discount the tough physical game that the Patriots had to endure against the Jets. Miami on the other hand cruised in the second half after going out to a 41-0 lead.<\/p>\n

Campbell has simplified the Dolphins\u2019 game plan and has relied on the players to execute for their success and it has worked to a tee thus far. But New England isn\u2019t Tennessee or Houston so what happens if the opponent gets out ahead early, will they be able to adjust quickly enough?<\/p>\n

This one will come down to the Patriots (read Brady) ability to attack the middle of the field and take advantage of the Dolphins linebackers with Gronkowski. It will require getting him involved early and getting off to a quick start. Miami\u2019s pass rush with a lead can be devastating as we saw in last season\u2019s opener.<\/p>\n

The Patriots have to slow Miller and get Miami into obvious passing situations. A-gap blitzes from Hightower and Collins against the Dolphins guards inside will be something to watch. This one will be another great game but look for Brady and Co. to get it done. Patriots 34-24<\/strong><\/p>\n
