The New England Patriots<\/strong><\/a> return home for a three-game stretch after a very successful road trip with wins over the Cowboys and Colts. This week they take on a resurgent Jets team for first place in the AFC East. The Jets are playing much better football than preseason predictions gave them credit for.<\/p>\n

The game will be televised on CBS with Ian Eagle and Dan Fouts handling the play-by-play and analyst duties and will be carried locally on WBZ TV. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m.<\/p>\n

The Jets (4-1) have thrived under new coach Todd Bowles and a re-tooled secondary. The team brought back Darrelle Revis, Antonio Cromartie as well as Buster Skrine and the pass defense is one of the best if not the best in the NFL.<\/p>\n

The Jets offense has been keyed behind the physical running of Chris Ivory, who has been outstanding thru the first quarter plus of the season. Last week the Jets blew out the Washington Redskins 34-20 as Ivory gained 146 yards on the ground and 196 overall.<\/p>\n

New England (5-0), was victorious over the Colts 34-27 on Sunday Night Football as Tom Brady continued his sharp play to start the season. Brady threw for over 300 yards and three touchdowns in the contest that featured one of the more bizarre special teams plays that one could imagine. The Colts tried a fake punt that had zero chance of success which led to a Patriots touchdown that put the game away in the second half.<\/p>\n

We here at\u00a0PatsFans.com<\/a>\u00a0are continuing our \u00a0\u201cRazor\u2019s Edge\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0 column in 2015 to give a quick break down on some of the key matchups of the game and what you can look for in how the game plays out.<\/p>\n

Series History: <\/strong>The Patriots and Jets have met 115 times in their history with the results being pretty even throughout the history and rivalry between the two teams. New England holds a 60-54-1 edge overall as they\u2019ve dominated in the win column the past several years although most of the games have been very close.<\/p>\n

The Patriots are 31-25-1 overall against the Jets at home in their history. New England took both games last season with a total difference of three points in the matchups. A 27-25 win at home and a 17-16 win in the Meadowlands.<\/p>\n

Here is a look at some of the key matchups and who holds the Razor\u2019s Edge.<\/p>\n

First up is the Patriots offense:
\nPatriots RBs vs Jets Front Seven – <\/strong>Razor\u2019s Edge Jets
\n<\/em>The Jets have an outstanding front seven featuring Sheldon Richardson, Muhammad Wilkerson, rookie Leonard Williams as well as linebackers David Harris and Calvin Pace. The Jets are extremely stout at the point of attack and are giving up an average of only 82.6 yards per game.<\/p>\n

The Patriots injuries along the offensive line especially with Nate Solder lost for the year will have a rough time trying to pound the ball against this defense. Look for more Dion Lewis (if he\u2019s healthy), to run some quick hitters to try to keep the defense honest.<\/p>\n

Patriots WRs vs Jets Secondary – <\/strong>Razor\u2019s Edge New England
\n<\/em>Brady continues to shine through the first five games of the season leading the league in passer rating and operating at a very high level. With Julian Edelman, Rob Gronkowski, Danny Amendola and Dion Lewis out of the backfield, he\u2019s had a plethora of weapons to choose from. Brandon LaFell may play this week, coming off PUP and that is a great sign for the offense.<\/p>\n

The Jets defense is outstanding against the pass; Revis and Cromartie allow them to shut down opponents top receivers outside the numbers while Bowles mixes in blitzes to confuse and disrupt the opponents\u2019 passing game. With New England\u2019s patchwork OL this will be a key area to watch.<\/p>\n

One key this week is the Jets slot corner Skrine who is suffering from a concussion. If he can\u2019t go and his backup Marcus Williams who is suffering from a bad hamstring can\u2019t play it will leave them with Dexter McDougle who has only played STs until last week. That will be a mismatch against Amendola.<\/p>\n

Next up the Jets offense:<\/p>\n

Jets RBs vs NE Front Seven –\u00a0<\/strong>Razor\u2019s Edge Jets
\n<\/em>The Jets are averaging 146 yards per game on the ground and it is mainly behind the running of Ivory behind an underrated Jets offensive line. Ivory has gained 460 yards in four games this season and missed the only Jets loss against Philadelphia with an injury.<\/p>\n

The Patriots defense has been playing a lot of 4-2-5 nickel with an extra safety on the field. As a result, they\u2019ve been susceptible to the run and giving up an average of 114 yards per game. They\u2019ll probably show more base defense this week against the Jets and could really use Dont\u2019a Hightower back this week (rib injury), as they try to slow down this potent Jets running game.<\/p>\n

Jets WRs vs NE Secondary- <\/strong>Razor\u2019s Edge New England
\n<\/em>If there is a weakness on this Jets team it remains the quarterback. The Jets are thriving in spite of rather than because of Ryan Fitzpatrick. Although he\u2019s played well thus far, he still turns the ball over way too much and has seven interceptions already this season. The Jets have some nice weapons now in the passing game with Brandon Marshall, Eric Decker as well as rookie speedster Devin Smith and Jeremy Kerley.<\/p>\n

The Patriots pass rush (19 sacks thus far), has been beneficial to a completely new secondary that has been good thru the first five games of the season. The key here for the Patriots is to try to force the game into Fitzpatrick\u2019s hands and then bait him into making mistakes. In his last four games against New England, Fitzpatrick has thrown for plenty of yards (1363), and 10 touchdowns but also 11 interceptions.<\/p>\n

Special Teams- <\/strong>Razor\u2019s Edge New England
\n<\/em>The Patriots have two of the best weapons on STs with kickers Stephen Gostkowski and Ryan Allen. Gostkowski has yet to miss an extra point or field goal in 2015. Allen has been excellent at pinning opponents deep in their territory. The coverage units have been outstanding although STs Captain Matthew Slater will probably miss this one after being injured in Indianapolis.<\/p>\n

The Jets counter with K Nick Folk and P Ryan Quigley with the dangerous Kerley in the punt return game. The Jets did have a punt blocked last week against the Redskins. That is something that may come into play if the situation plays out.<\/p>\n

Next up Who wins and why? <\/p>\n

Prediction:
\n<\/strong>The Patriots will face their toughest test of the season with the Jets and their defense giving them all they can handle especially given the state of the offensive line right now. The Jets plan will be to disrupt and re-route the NE receivers at the line and force Brady into holding on to the ball where their pass rush will disrupt their timing and take advantage of their front seven.<\/p>\n

New England will try to force the game into Fitzpatrick\u2019s hands where he\u2019s shown he gets that gunslinger\u2019s mentality, something both Houston and OC Chan Gailey have worked to curb. This will be a great matchup between two rivals that know each other very well. But in the end, Brady will find a way, as he\u2019s always done to get the job done at home where New England has been outstanding under Bill Belichick. Patriots 27-24<\/strong><\/p>\n
