Key Matchups

The New England Patriots and the Indianapolis Colts meet on Sunday Night Football for a rematch of last years’ AFC Championship Game. The primetime matchup will be televised by NBC with the announcing crew of Al Michaels, Cris Collinsworth and Michelle Tafoya on the call. Kick-off is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. ET.

Indianapolis (3-2) has gotten off to a slow start in 2015 and although they’ve won their last three games, they haven’t been the team that many experts picked to represent the AFC in this season’s Super Bowl. Last week backup QB Matt Hasselback led the team to a 27-20 win over the Houston Texans.

Quarterback Andrew Luck and CB Greg Toler are expected to play for the Colts this week which should be a big boost for the team on both sides of the ball.

New England (4-0), won at Dallas last week 30-6 after a slow start to the game that saw Tom Brady sacked five times in the first half. But the offense made their adjustments and Brady was laser-sharp in the second half going 10-11 for 165 yards and two touchdowns. More importantly, they allowed zero sacks.

The defense held the Cowboys to a pair of field goals and generating two turnovers. It was their best performance of the year to date but in the process they lost LB Dont’a Hightower to a rib injury. His status is unknown for Sunday.

We here at PatsFans.com are continuing our “Razor’s Edge” column in 2015 to give a quick break down on some of the key matchups of the game and what you can look for in how the game plays out.

Series History: The Patriots and Colts will meet for the 80th time on Sunday and this series has been dominated by New England. The Patriots hold a 50-29 edge overall including a 21-17 advantage on games played in Indy.

The Patriots have won the last six meetings including two last season; a 42-20 win in Indianapolis and a 45-7 win in the AFC Championship Game in New England.

Here is a look at some of the key matchups and who holds the Razor’s Edge.

First up is the Patriots offense:

Patriots RBs vs Colts Front Seven – Razor’s Edge New England
The Patriots in their last three games against the Colts have rushed for 657 yards. That means they’re winning the battles up front and in the trenches. With a nice 1-2 combination of LaGarrette Blount and Dion Lewis, the Pats have the option to run or pass and have the big bruiser (Blount), or the speedy, quicker Lewis to keep opponents off balance.

The Colts issue was their front line on defense last season and once Arthur Jones went down with an injury they now have three new starters on the DL. David Parry is the nose tackle and he’s flanked by Henry Anderson and Kendall Langford at defensive end.

Look for the Patriots to assert themselves quickly in the running game early in this one, first with Lewis and later with Blount as they attempt to wear down the Colts defense.

Patriots WRs vs Colts Secondary – Razor’s Edge New England
Tom Brady has been playing lights out during the first quarter of the season; he’s completing 72.5 percent of his throws and has 11 touchdowns and zero interceptions with a quarterback rating of 121.5. His two favorite targets remain Julian Edelman and Rob Gronkowski but the emergence of Lewis in the passing game has been a very pleasant surprise.

The Colts are currently 27th in the league in pass defense and only have six sacks in the first five games. That puts a lot of pressure on the back end of the defense and even with the return of Toler at corner, they’ll have issues stopping Gronkowski who’ll be a big advantage for the Patriots when they attack the middle of the field.

This could a week where we see a lot of two-tight end sets and the emergence of TE Scott Chandler more in the passing game. Chandler hasn’t been targeted much and with a Colts team that struggles to cover the tight end, this may be a good time for Brady to get both he and Gronk involved quickly in the passing game.

Next up the Indianapolis offense:

Colts RBs vs NE Front Seven – Razor’s Edge Indianapolis
The Colts for the past several years have struggled to run the football. But by bringing in Frank Gore, they look to have addressed that big need. Gore had his best game of the year last week rushing for 98 yards on 22 carries against the Texans and the Colts will look to keep things balanced on offense to take the pressure off of Luck to do it all.

The Patriots defensive front seven did a good job of bottling up the Dallas running game last week; going more with a base look early, the big bodies up front did a good job against the Cowboys OL, one of the best in the NFL.

Gore should find some yardage inside this week as the Patriots will look to use more of their sub-packages against the Colts this week. The key here is if Indy remains patient enough with the running game to keep it effective.

Colts WRs vs NE Secondary- Razor’s Edge New England
Indy has plenty of weapons in the passing game with Luck throwing to T.Y. Hilton, Donte Moncrief and Coby Fleener. They added both Andre Johnson and Gore during free agency and then used their first round draft pick on Phillip Dorsett in the 2015 NFL Draft. But the passing game hasn’t been the one that people were expecting to see this season. Luck prior to his shoulder injury struggled, passing for only five touchdowns against seven interceptions. They’ll look to get that straightened out this week.

The Patriots entered 2015 with a lot of questions about the secondary after overhauling the CB position entirely. But so far the coverage has been pretty solid; this week will be another big test as they face an offense with a lot of weapons at its disposal. Getting a good pass rush on Luck will be key here, Jabaal Sheard and Jamie Collins had big games last week, look for them to be the guys to bring the heat.

This will be a good week for the Colts to feature Dorsett in the passing game, with Hilton, Moncrief and Johnson in the lineup, he’s been kind of pushed to the back burner a bit. It will bear watching to see how Hilton fairs against a secondary with Kyle Arrington. Arrington now a member of the Ravens always did a great job of matching up with the speedy Hilton. Turnovers as always will be a key area to watch here.

Special Teams- Razor’s Edge Push
The Patriots have one of the solidest kicking games in the league with P Ryan Allen and K Stephen Gostkowski, with each bringing a great degree of expertise to the table. Gostkowski hasn’t missed a FG this season and last week boomed a 57-yarder at Dallas that would have been good from much further.

Indy has excellence in the kicking game as well with P Pat McAfee who is among the best in the league and K Adam Vinatieri, the ageless one who continues on with a Hall of Fame resume.

Both teams have been excellent in coverage so it will come down to who makes the big play on Sunday night. This is one of their rare occasions where New England doesn’t have a clear cut advantage on special teams.

So who wins and why? Next up our prediction:

Prediction:
The Patriots and Bill Belichick are playing this up as just another game on the schedule, albeit a big one against the team they played in the conference championship game last season. This one is much more important to the Colts, they’ve been curb-stomped by New England the last four times the teams have met and if they want to take that next big step, then this is the time to do it.

Andrew Luck will have to have a big game for the Colts to pull the upset here. He’s yet to figure out Belichick’s defense, much like his predecessor Peyton Manning struggled with early in his career. Eventually he’ll get it figured out, but will this be the week?

On the flip side, Tom Brady has no such issues with the Indianapolis defense, the last four times the teams have met, the Patriots have put up an average of 47.2 points per game. That puts a lot of strain on the opposing team, having to score on every possession just to keep up. Brady and the Patriots will offense will have another big game and for the NE QB, as much as he’ll down-play it, after all the tumultuous off-season fiasco he’s had to endure, this one is personal. Patriots 37-20

Follow me on Twitter @SteveB7SFG or email me at stevebpatsfans@gmail.com

Listen to our Patriots 4th and 2 podcast on blog talk radio as the writers Russ Goldman, Derek Havens and I from PatsFans.com discuss the latest Patriots news Wednesdays at 12 noon.

The Patriots offense in the last four meetings with Indianapolis has put up 59, 43, 42 and 45 points for an average of 42 points per game.
