Following an initial report where it appeared David Andrews’ time in New England was coming to an end, Thursday night’s news that there was a change in course was definitely one of the bright spots to close out this week.

ESPN’s Field Yates and Mike Reiss each reported on Andrews return to the Patriots, with the veteran center reportedly agreeing to a 4-year deal with the team.  That now has Andrews in the fold for New England moving forward and his impact in the offense definitely can’t be understated.

One of the biggest things that makes him special is the fact he’s so physical up front, with his return in 2020 sparking an improvement in their ground game.  Andrews sat out the 2019 season following being diagnosed with blood clots in his lungs and his impact during his return this year was impressive.  In 2019, the Patriots went from averaging 3.34-yards per gain on runs up the middle to 4.16 yards in 2020, with Andrews providing the type of push that Ted Karras couldn’t the previous season.

New England went out and brought back Karras after initial reports of Andrews’ departure surfaced, but fortunately, they were ultimately able to bring Andrews back.  That’s terrific news because, for a team that will likely need to rely on the run for the foreseeable future with Cam Newton back under center, Andrews certainly makes them better.  Not to mention the fact that the job he does up front making adjustments at the line is quietly also one of his strengths.

For now, he’s excited to be back and it’s probably safe to say everyone in New England is also looking forward to what’s to come for Andrews in the coming seasons.

The 28-year-old Andrews originally joined the Patriots back in 2015 as an undrafted free agent.  This is his second extension with the team, having signed a 3-year deal back in 2017 to stay with the team back through the 2020 season.
