John Gruden is coming off of season where his club got off to a hot start before eventually finishing 8-8 after losing three of their final four games, which likely has him fuming this offseason.
The Raiders know they’ll need to make some changes as Gruden looks to take his team to the next level and it sounds like one move could include a new quarterback.
According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the Raiders are pondering moving on from Derek Carr this offseason and could possibly join the sweepstakes for Houston’s Deshaun Watson. They see a scenario where the Raiders would get two first-round picks for Carr, which they would package to send to Houston to acquire Watson.
While New England needs a quarterback, the odds of them giving up multiple first-round picks to make a deal for Carr seems unlikely.
Meanwhile, if the Texans stick to their guns and Watson stays put, these whispers likely won’t sit well with Carr or even other players in their locker room, which could put Gruden in an even more difficult situation heading into next season.
While the Raiders are committed to Gruden, this certainly seems like a key offseason for a coach who has yet to get the Raiders franchise back to the next level. When it comes to Gruden’s issues with Carr, reports have said that one frustration has been the quarterback’s inability to extend plays, which is something Watson would clearly give him.
However, not getting Watson would certainly make things a little awkward. Considering things already seem to be a little shaky between the two, these trade whispers likely won’t help.
How it plays out remains to be seen but it definitely adds another layer to what is already shaping up to be an interesting offseason.
