Through five games in 2020, New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman has largely struggled under the new offense with quarterback Cam Newton.

Although Edelman has 20 receptions for 302 yards this season, eight catches for 179 yards came in one game against the Seattle Seahawks.

In the other four games, Edelman is averaging just three receptions for 30.7 yards per game and has yet to find the end zone. He also leads the NFL in dropped passes (11) since the start of last year.

Over the past three games, Edelman has just seven receptions, with six targets in each.

On Instagram Thursday, Edelman remained positive with an inspirational message for himself and the team heading into Week 7.

“We can either stay here, or we can fight our way back into the light. One inch at a time.”

Speaking on WEEI’s The Greg Hill Show Friday, Edelman was asked about what he and the offense need to do better.

“I mean obviously we have to catch the ball better,” Edelman said. “I think just focusing on the little details of each play and getting back to fundamental football. It’s been a weird year and your mind wonders here and there. You’re practicing, you’re not practicing, all these things, these factors — the best teams are the teams that are going to be able to focus on all those little route details, play details, scheme details and trying to play that to the best of your ability. When you start playing those little games, that’s when you play your best football, or at least I play my best football.”

Edelman and the Patriots offense will look to get back on track against a stout 49ers defense that is holding opponents to third-best red zone touchdown percentage of 46.7% this season.
