The first of the big Patriots free agent domino’s has fallen, and it didn’t go the way anyone in New England wanted it to go. There are multiple reports but first detailed by Dan Hellie that the Miami Dolphins are signing Patriots free agent wide receiver Danny Amendola.

Terms of the deal are not yet available.

It was a devastating development for the Patriots, of the three big team free agents, Nate Solder, Dion Lewis and Amendola, it was he that was the most expected back in 2018. The man who has taken more than one pay cut to remain with the Patriots is now on his way to South Beach.

He was clutch for the Patriots, especially in the playoffs and will have saved his best for last. The three-game stretch of the playoffs was the best of his career. He caught for 26 passes for 348 yards during the Super Bowl run after catching 61 passes during the regular season.

Tom Brady loses not only one of his most clutch receivers in the past five years, but one of his closest friends. The Patriots lose much more. He was their primary punt returner, the emergency insurance policy with Julian Edelman down and possessed the best hands on the team.

At age 32, this was his last, best chance to cash in and his market will never be any higher. Needless to say, neither of the last two Super Bowl wins happen without the clutch play that Amendola produced for the Patriots.

Miami needs a slot receiver, having just traded Jarvis Landry to the Cleveland Browns. Ryan Tannehill just got an early free agency gift.
