When you have the best tight end in football, it makes sense to try and lock him up for the long-haul and make sure he remains in uniform for a long time.
The Patriots had seemingly done that, having extended him back in 2012 while nailing him down until at least 2019 when he signed his $55.23 million deal. His cryptic Tweet back in March was seemingly harmless, but it sounds like the team is taking steps to solidify his situation.

According to the Boston Herald’s Jeff Howe, the two sides are reportedly working on a new agreement, which would eliminate any concern about the “reasons” Gronkowski cited in his tweet about why he plays the game. The veteran was set to make $2.25 million this season, which was hardly commensurate with what he brings to the table in terms of his presence and ability on the field.
While nothing is imminent at this point, it’s a good sign that the Patriots are trying to keep him happy and in the fold for the foreseeable future.
