FOOTBALL NOTES (3/1) — The Boston Globe reported this morning that Terrell Buckley of the Miami Dolphins disclosed a plan that would make him a Patriot.

The Globe said Buckley told reporters in Miami yesterday that Patriots cornerback and good friend Ty Law would be willing to restructure his $50 million contract to make room under the salary cap for Buckley to join the New England secondary. Buckley said Law was going to talk to Patriots management about the idea.

According to an article in this morning’s Miami Herald, Buckley feels that Jimmy Johnson damaged his reputation when he benched him in favor of Patrick Surtain after the Thanksgiving Day loss to Dallas.

“His stunt he pulled, taking me out of the lineup, destroyed the team — or at least really hurt the team,” Buckley told the Herald. “I did not agree with it then, I still don’t agree with it, and I still don’t understand it.”

According to the Globe another player the Patriots are reportedly pursuing is New York Giants linebacker Marcus Buckley, a spot starter and a very good special teams player. Buckley can play strongside or middle linebacker, and could be insurance for Ted Johnson, as it appears the Patriots may not re-sign Marty Moore.

New England also may be interested in is defensive end Shane Burton, a former Dolphin and Chicago Bear who played in 15 games as a backup last year. He recorded three sacks last season. Burton is 6 feet 6 inches, 305 pounds, and started 12 games last season. They may need him to take over for Ferric Collons, who is looking for a big raise after being released and later re-aquired at a much reduced salary.

Nine-year veteran cornerback Robert Bailey, who started 11 games for the Detroit Lions and recorded two sacks and two interceptions may also be of interest if this deal with Terrell Buckley doesn’t happen. Bailey spent three years with the Lions and has also played for Miami, Dallas, and St. Louis.
