Several members already expressed the fact that financial restraints are a real issue.
Please also expand on the idea that the team tossed pennies last year...

Trent Brown, who played solidly for us but is far from a star, got a stunning $66M over 4 years from the Raiders. Trent Williams is a star OT, and I assume he will want a new contract, how much is he going to want? HINT: More than the Pats can afford even with some financial sleight of hand. ;)

Here's the thing: Trent Williams might be the best LT in the league and reportedly a good locker room guy. We don't hear about him because he plays for such a dumpster fire of a team in DC. There are just 5 negatives keeping him from becoming a Patriot.

    1. He's under contract for the next 2 years at $27MM

    2. We have $6MM in cap space.

    3. He was suspended twice for PED issues

    4. It would cost a first round pick

    5. They AREN'T going to trade him

But outside of those few minor impediments, trading for Williams would DEFINITELY solve any lingering OT questions the Pats have.

The Redskins are in rebuilding mode. If the right offer arrives for a 31 year old that wants out, they will discuss it.

Here's a guy who's making $13.5MM/yr NOW. He just saw a guy who isn't NEARLY as good as he is get close to $17MM/yr (Trent Brown)

THEN you have explain to me how 6 equals 13.5. After that, sure, we can make a deal.

Very interesting to see 2 teams that went to the playoffs last season and have a lot of buzz for this one, with so much cap space (Colts/Texans)

And at about $5MM, the Pats have one of the lowest cap space numbers.

Finally one question. It has been widely speculated that Brady's expect contract extension CAN'T be finalized until August. Is that true?

OK here's another. ;) Given your familiarity with how the Pats have handled Brady's past extensions. What is your best guess at the structure and how much cap space can be created (if any)?

I'm not saying that the following is in the cards, but it seems the likeliest avenue to take if there's any actual interest here:

To get Williams, the Patriots would probably have to go higher with the draft pick in order to get the Redskins to make a contract adjustment that would have them taking on most of the salary.

Joel Corry, a former agent who now writes about the salary cap for CBS Sports and I both believe Brady's deal can be redone now.

I go into a great deal into what I expect a Brady extension to look like at
